In June 2018, Emilio Valdez left the house where he lived with his mother and got into a car. Just a few minutes later, the sound of gunshots being fired from inside the vehicle was reportedly heard, and the car quickly sped away. The following day, fishermen discovered a trail of blood on the docks, and from the same area, both the vehicle Emilio had gotten into and his remains were recovered. The investigation did not make significant progress in its early years, but that changed in 2022 when a new team of detectives began taking a fresh look at the case. In ID’s ‘Bodies in the Water: The Deep End of Envy,’ the timeline of the case and the details surrounding the investigation are explored in depth.
Emilio Valdez Was Killed After He Left His House in the Middle of the Night
Emilio A. Valdez was born on March 14, 1998, to Ramiro Valdez II and Pamela Valdez. He grew up in Pontiac, Michigan, alongside his siblings, Guadalupe, Tiffany, Sara, Danielle, Ramiro, Melissa, Charity, Frank, and Dustin. After the passing of his father and his mother’s relationship with Daniel Walford, Emilio continued to live with his mother and remained close to his family. He was content with the life he had built for himself and looked toward the future with optimism. Emilio was a bright presence in the lives of those around him and was known for always being willing to help his family in whatever way he could.

On June 7, 2018, Emilio left his mother’s house at around 2 am and got into a car that was parked in front of a neighbor’s home. Detectives later disclosed that when he left, he was carrying some marijuana and a shoebox. He entered the vehicle, which was later identified as a Pontiac Grand Prix, and never returned home. It was not until the following day, at around 3 pm, that a person fishing on Osmun Lake contacted the police after discovering a trail of bloody clothing and a crashed vehicle. When officers arrived, they found the Grand Prix, which appeared to have crashed into the docks. A trail of blood and bloodstained clothing led away from the vehicle and toward the lake, where Emilio’s remains were eventually recovered. He had suffered two gunshot wounds to the chest, and the autopsy later determined that he was still alive before he entered the water.
Emilio Valdez’s Killer Was Helped by Two Other to Conceal the Crime
The clothing found near Osmun Lake appeared to have what investigators believed was a bullet hole. Police also spoke with Melissa Fielder, Emilio’s sister, who told them that shortly after her brother left the house that night, she heard gunshots in the area and then heard a car speeding away. In fact, it was Melissa who identified the vehicle as a Pontiac Grand Prix. When investigators ran the license plate number, they discovered that the car had been reported missing by none other than Emilio’s much older sister, Guadalupe Maria Davila-Rodriguez. Police brought her in for questioning, but she maintained that she had no idea how her vehicle ended up near the lake. She added that it had already been reported missing before the incident.

Police also questioned Angel Jose Alvarez, Guadalupe’s son and someone who was much closer to Emilio in age. Angel likewise maintained that he had no knowledge of what had happened to his uncle. With no additional leads emerging, the investigation stalled for years. Even so, detectives developed a theory about what might have happened that night. They believed that Emilio had willingly gotten into the car because he knew the person inside. Investigators suspected that he was shot while in the vehicle and that the events at the lake were not part of a carefully planned scheme but rather a decision made by the killer in the aftermath of the crime. The case remained at a standstill until 2022, when a new team of detectives reopened the investigation.
When investigators reviewed Emilio’s Snapchat activity from the hours before his death, they discovered a message that read, “You coming?” sent shortly before he left the house. According to detectives, the account was linked to Angel. They also examined phone records and found that Angel had made calls to his brother, Juan Diego Hernandez, and to Guadalupe. Investigators noted that she reported her car missing after receiving that call. Based on the timeline they reconstructed, detectives believed that Angel contacted Juan to pick him up after the events at the lake and then called his mother to ask her to report the vehicle as missing. Authorities have not publicly disclosed a specific motive for the crime. However, given the family connections between the individuals involved, investigators believed that the circumstances likely stemmed from a personal dispute or conflict.
Emilio Valdez is Serving a Long Sentence in a Michigan Prison Today

His brother, Juan Hernandez, and his mother, Guadalupe Maria Davila-Rodriguez, were also charged as accessories in connection with the case. His trial did not begin until June 2024. After hearing the evidence, the jury found Angel guilty of second-degree murder. He was subsequently sentenced to 36½ to 80 years in prison. As of now, he has not filed any appeals challenging his conviction. Angel is currently being held at the Oaks Correctional Facility in Manistee, Michigan.
