‘The Art of Racing in the Rain’ follows Enzo, a golden retriever whose world revolves around his owner, Denny Swift, a talented race car driver who wants to be in Formula One. Enzo’s Journey Offers a Deeply Philosophical Perspective on Animal and Human Life
While Enzo is a fictional dog, the inspiration behind his character comes from real-life observations by Garth Stein, whose eponymous novel the film is based on. The story behind the novel was shaped by several different ideas that came together over time. The author first encountered the concept of dogs being reincarnated as men through the Mongolian belief referenced in the documentary ‘State of Dogs’. Years later, after hearing Billy Collins read his poem ‘The Revenant’, which presents the perspective of a dog after death, he became certain that he wanted to tell a story through a dog’s eyes. He then developed Enzo as a dog who believes that he will return to Earth as a man in his next life.
The decision to make Enzo the narrator also allows the story to explore events from an unusual perspective. Although Enzo cannot speak, he can observe situations that people may overlook. People often speak freely around dogs, allowing Enzo to witness private moments. Enzo’s name also has a connection to the world of Formula One. He is named after Enzo Ferrari, the founder of Ferrari, whose story has been covered in films such as ‘Ferrari’ by veteran filmmaker Michael Mann. Enzo, the golden retriever, is a unique character who sometimes appears more human than dog as the narrative moves forward. His ability to feel empathy and understand the flaws of the world adds to the story’s authenticity.
Enzo’s Heartwarming Nature is Brought to Life by the Efforts of Real Canine Performers
Enzo is a deeply caring dog who exudes empathy and love. The film reportedly brings Enzo’s character alive through the contributions of real golden retrievers. Parker, a two-year-old dog, brings his expressions and subtle head movements to capture young Enzo’s essence. Butler portrays the older Enzo, while Orbit essays the role in barking scenes since Parker did not like to bark. Several puppies also contribute to the portrayal of Enzo at different stages of his life. Milo Ventimiglia, who plays Denny, also spent time bonding with the dogs off camera and frequently interacted with them to help bring out their performances. Speaking to EW, Ventimiglia stated, “We had Parker, who was 2, and we had Butler, who was 9. The film spans about 10 years of Denny’s life and the dog’s life, so we had to age up and age down… It wasn’t as challenging as people imagine it to be.”
The actor added, “Besides Parker, it took a company of canines to cover the span of Enzo’s life in the film: Butler, 9; two auxiliary dogs, Solar and Orbit; and 8 to 12 puppies.” Ventimiglia bonded with Parker to the point that he even wanted to adopt him. The actor worked closely with the dogs to make them feel like genuine companions rather than simply trained performers. This familiarity helped the dogs respond to him naturally and made them feel like true acting partners. Reportedly, working with the dogs for the movie required a structured rehearsal process, particularly because many of their movements were prompted by trainers and food. Enzo’s beautiful story is at the very core of the film and delivers poignant messages to viewers.
