Created by Dago García, Netflix’s ‘Eva Lasting,’ also known as ‘La Primera Vez,’ journeys alongside Camilo and Eva as they come of age and find love. Set in the 1970s, right in the middle of a cultural revolution in the city of Bogotá, the story introduces Eva Samper as the first girl to join an all-boys turned co-ed school. There, she befriends a curious but endearing group of boys, and soon falls in love with Camilo, an aspiring writer who struggles with his own demons on a daily basis. With each episode of this Colombian romantic drama series, the duo has to face a number of obstacles, each refining their understanding of each other and the unique, artistically charged bond they share. However, by the fourth season, everyone in Camilo’s team is now an adult and has to navigate a wholly new reality. SPOILERS AHEAD.
Eva Lasting Season 4 Plot Recap
The fourth season of ‘Eva Lasting’ continues Camilo and Eva’s college life, picking up right after the publication of the former’s debut novel, ‘The First Woman.’ While it is a smash-hit, the tribe, as well as Camilo’s parents, are left stunned by how he dramatizes them, often with a mean edge. These arguments are put to rest when Eva teaches the group how autobiographical fictionalization actually works, and for a moment, it seems that the crew is back on track. However, with both Luisa and Arbelaez, as well as Camilo and Eva, getting closer as couples, it is time for them to bid the iconic house 364 goodbye. This, too, creates rifts between Camilo and his friends, but they soon come to accept the decision.

After house-hunting for quite some time, Camilo and Eva settle on a rather expensive house, banking on Eva’s father to shoulder the bulk of the payment. However, when he disowns her for getting together with Camilo, the duo is left to fend for themselves. Over the months, they go to great extremes to collect money, even participating in a television gameshow, and nearly winning. In the end, Eva has no choice but to accept the reality check of how she has led a sheltered life thus far and must take accountability for her own actions. After training diligently, she becomes one of the first car saleswomen in the country, but soon learns that she is pregnant.
Eva plans to keep the child, and while Camilo is initially not on board, he soon comes around, and even gets them a pet named Schopenhauer as part of their training. However, when Eva loses track of the dog one evening, Camilo bursts out at her, prompting her to leave the house in tears, only to be hit by a drunk driver. Although the couple loses the baby, they still power through the hard times, with Camilo eventually landing a job as a soap opera humorist. While this is a step down from his literary ambitions, he soon grows into the job. Meanwhile, Eva begins working as a translator for an American author named Scott, whom she begins to have feelings for. Camilo, too, ends up kissing his producer and friend Marcela, which leads to a messy breakup between him and Eva. As three years go by, the world appears to have changed drastically, but the tribe is reunited when Luisa and Arbelaez get caught up in a terror incident.
Eva Lasting Season 4 Ending: Do Camilo and Eva Get Back Together?
‘Eva Lasting’ ends with Camilo and Eva reuniting at last, and hopefully for good. After three years of essentially zero contact, their sudden reunion is bound to be awkward, but what neither of them expects is the surge of romantic feelings when they lock eyes. While it initially seems that Eva is avoiding Camilo because she is still upset with him, the finale subverts that idea, revealing that she, too, has been grappling with her complex feelings of love, and that a part of her wishes to run away and bury things entirely. She almost goes through with this route by booking a flight back to America and bidding goodbye to everyone, but changes her mind mid-way, presumably moments before boarding the plane. Ultimately, she returns to Camilo at his doorstep, confessing her never-ending love for him once again.

Eva doesn’t have to wait for Camilo’s response to her proposal, as it is already evident to us that he is still madly in love with her. As the couple shares a passionate kiss, four seasons’ worth of romantic buildup reaches its climax. The journey from there, however, is far from easy, as a quick flash forward reveals that the couple still has a lot of evolving to do. While they appear to have moved back together and reconnected with their near and dear ones in Bogotá, the exact dimensions of their renewed relationship are largely left to the viewers’ imagination. Most importantly, their being together likely means that Eva is no longer in contact with Scott, and might even have lost her job as a translator. While she is still talented enough to rebuild her career from the ground up, it is a bit disproportionate when compared to Camilo, who essentially gets most of his life back on track almost immediately.
From the start, Camilo and Eva’s relationship has been in a swing-state primarily for a single reason: their inability to find a middle ground between independence and codependence. While questions of power dynamics are normal in every relationship, neither of our two protagonists is ever consistent in how much they want to let each other into their personal lives. These gaps compound over time to create major rifts in their relationship, ultimately causing a three-year break where both characters find some sort of love again, but still don’t feel whole. As such, their relationship is complex, comprised of a cycle of them hurting and healing each other. While it is indeed toxic on some level, it also constitutes the main impetus in what drives them forward, both as a couple and as individuals.
Is Luisa Dead or Alive?
A big question purposefully left unanswered in the show’s finale is Luisa’s fate. The last we hear on this subject, the government seems to have no clue about where she and the other missing hostages are, and even the media buzz around the subject seems to have dried out. Although things look grimmer than ever, no one in the tribe loses hope or gives in to the idea that Luisa is gone. The biggest reason for that is perhaps Salcedo’s trip to the morgue, where he confirms that Luisa is not one of the people who are confirmed dead. While this instills hope about her survival, it still doesn’t explain how she disappeared or where she might be. The likely explanation for all of this is that she is captured by the rebels, possibly because of her value as an expert doctor.

In the early episodes of the season, we see a member of the M-19 lose their lives because of poor medical assistance, and it is possible that the organization has since learnt its lesson, and is on the lookout for skilled doctors who can help them out. Another, scarier possibility is that Luisa has been mislabeled as a politically relevant figure, which explains why she has seemingly vanished without a trace. The people at Camilo’s workplace suggest that this is indeed a possibility, and in that scenario, the chances of the rebel groups backing out and releasing the remaining hostages are slim to none. Even though Camilo’s campaign to rescue Eva worked once, fate doesn’t seem to be on his side when it comes to Luisa, at least for the foreseeable future.

The final moments of the season reveal a rather dark version of reality, where the tribe has no choice but to move on with their lives, with Luisa’s fate constantly at the back of their minds. Despite them spending weeks demanding a better investigation, and then months being emotionally wrecked by her disappearance, everyone simultaneously comes to the conclusion that things cannot continue as is. As such, Camilo and Eva essentially become Tina’s parents in spirit, bringing her to school on her first day.
Although the crew desperately hopes that Luisa will return one day, they are left with no choice but to reshape their lives without her, and this might just go on forever. The creators’ decision to obfuscate Luisa’s fate might be their larger commentary on how time, or rather the unpredictability of life, can easily consume whatever plans one has. In that case, the best way to live is by appreciating the present and letting go of the past, which is what Camilo and Eva ultimately do.
Does Eva Finish the Movie? What Happens to the Tribe?
Following Luisa’s absence, Eva’s plan to finish the grand movie about the tribe isn’t brought up again with much enthusiasm for the rest of the episode. That, however, doesn’t mean that the concept behind the movie has dissolved as well, because this is where the show’s metafictional identity truly shines. In the episode titled ‘Six Characters in Search of an Author,’ Camilo and others reference the eponymous play by famed dramatist Luigi Pirandello, which is all about breaking the fourth wall and challenging narrative conventions. In a way, ‘Eva Lasting’ attempts something similar by charting the unusual lives of Camilo and his friends, which spiritually makes it the movie that Eva has been wanting to make all along.

While the show itself can be interpreted as an extension of Eva’s dream movie about the friends, another way to understand why she shelved the production is Luisa’s fate. It is important to remember that the tribe isn’t just made of the boys, but rather, it is Eva and Luisa who hold everything together. Without Luisa, the group is left hollow on some level, and that makes the creation of a play void. One of the final beats of the episode is a flashback to when Eva declared that the group would be friends forever, and while that is still true, things don’t quite hit the same without Luisa in the picture. As such, Eva might just be saving her magnum opus for her best friend’s return, until which point the story will have to wait.
With Eva and Camilo finding love and making full use of their second chance at life together, the story returns to the other members of the tribe, who are all going through their own ups and downs. The biggest change happens in Salcedo’s life, as many visual cues seem to confirm that Monica is no longer with him. In episode 11, she tells him that she doesn’t want children, and that it is ultimately his call whether he wants to sustain the relationship in those circumstances. It appears, as such, that Salcedo made his choice, and the couple has separated. Contrasting this is Pabon, who seems to be finally finding the respect he deserves as an artist. With Alvaro becoming a professional referee, his anger issues appear to have subsided almost completely, but it is Arbelaez who is suffering the most out of the boys, because of the very real possibility that he might lose Luisa.
Will Camilo Become a Novelist Again? Who is He Narrating the Story to?
For Camilo, becoming a successful soap opera writer comes at the cost of his novelist ambitions, and while it almost feels like he will never return to literary storytelling ever again, the ending brings new hope to his arc. Notably, Camilo’s career switch was one of the many reasons Eva drifted apart from him and began developing feelings for Scott, the novelist. Now that she is back with Camilo, he might have the inspiration he has needed all along to pen down his next masterpiece after ‘The First Woman.’ The last time he created a draft, it was rejected because of not having clarity in its themes, but this time around, he is most likely prepared for whatever the world throws at him, as he has the love of his life by his side.

Just as Eva’s dream movie can be imagined to be the show itself, one can also interpret Camilo’s next novel in a similar fashion. Notably, his first work is itself a redux of seasons 1 to 3, at least in spirit, and this puts a new light on how the fourth and final season is to be framed in the larger scheme of things. As has been noticeable from the start of the show, Camilo is much older in the narration, which indicates that he now has a lot more experience under his belt, and is purposefully narrating the entire story in all of its flaws, blemishes, and high points, to be transparent with his audience. Thus, just as ‘The First Woman’ is a work of autobiographical fiction, one can say the same about ‘Eva Lasting’ as well, which makes for a fitting conclusion to the show and to Camilo’s love story.
