Eva Lasting Season 5: Why Was it Canceled?

Created by Dago García, Netflix’s ‘Eva Lasting’ or ‘La Primera Vez’ returns with a fourth season to dive deeper into the lives of Camilo and Eva, who meet and fall for each other in school, but are now on track to become proper adults. Having lived with the tribe for quite some time now, the couple realizes that it’s time to find their own footing, but that ushers in waves of personal and professional challenges. Near the end of the season, the couple breaks up and does not interact for three full years, but their paths cross again when Luisa goes missing. In the final moments, Eva confesses her love to Camilo in the most definitive fashion yet, signaling the start of a new chapter in their story. However, with the season being referred to as the final season, it appears that Netflix will not be greenlighting a sequel anytime soon.

Season 4 is Meant to Conclude Camilo and Eva’s Coming-of-Age Journey

Given that Netflix has dubbed the fourth season of ‘Eva Lasting’ as the final chapter of the show, the chances of a fifth season being released are slim to none. It is likely that the creators always intended this to be a four-part series, as its coming-of-age arc concludes with Camilo and Eva reaching adulthood. In essence, the fourth season is about providing closure and bridging the gap between the Camilo we see grow up and the Camilo who narrates the story. Dago García told Semana that ‘Eva Lasting,’ which he considers his most personal project to date, is essentially a creative reimagining of his school and college years, which once again makes the fourth season the logical endpoint of the story. As such, a hypothetical fifth season is likely to go against the structure set up since day one, which can be quite the challenge for Dago and his team.

Notably, while the story of Camilo and Eva might be ending in the seasonal format, there is plenty of room for the supporting cast of the show to grow through their own potential spin-off movies or TV shows. Be it Pabon, Luisa, Ms. Ana, or even characters with lesser screentime like Estela, all of them have enough plot beats left in the tank to warrant a continuation of their respective storylines. Popular series like ‘Yellowstone’ and ‘The Walking Dead’ are known for branching out with character-specific sequels and spin-off entries, and something similar can happen for ‘Eva Lasting’ as well. That said, much of this depends on whether or not the fourth season resonates with the fans, as viewership, engagement, and the cost-to-profit ratio are all things that the production has to account for before greenlighting sequels to the story.

A Hypothetical Season 5 Must Clear up Luisa’s Fate

Although ‘Eva Lasting’ is confirmed to end with its fourth season, there is a single unresolved mystery in the finale that begs for a continuation of the story. After disappearing during a M-19 terrorist attack, Luisa doesn’t return home for what appears to be months. What’s trickier is that her body is not found in the morgue either, making it likely that she was kidnapped by the attackers and might just be alive. However, the fact that the show ends without any resolution to this thread is bound to make all fans curious. Incidentally, this is also the perfect set-up for a potential sequel to the show, and might have been intentionally left as is by the creators to gauge excitement. Still, even in the scenario where there is no fifth season, this ambiguous conclusion adds its own layers to the tribe’s dynamics and the show’s larger point.

A potential fourth season of the show can jump a few more years into the future, detailing how Camilo and his friends navigate adulthood. As he himself figures out in episode 11, Camilo is still as immature as ever, despite being in his 20s. As such, the future ahead offers him a chance to truly grow as a human being, as well as a partner and a writer. While he has been very successful as a television script writer, a possible sequel can easily add another feather to his literary cap, while also exploring Eva’s journey as a translator who has been pushed back to square one. Given that the tribe has a pact of never breaking their friendship, there is practically no end to the stories that can be developed around them. However, with Emmanuel Restrepo, who plays Camilo, indicating in a conversation with Pulzo that this is the juncture where the story might end, there is a very low possibility of a direct continuation of the plot thread.
