In the first week of March 2020, when a 96-year-old matriarch named Evelyn Murray-Bailey was found dead in her house in Baltimore County, Maryland, the entire community was shaken to its core. As the mystery surrounding the murder was investigated, the detectives uncovered a development that led them to the primary suspect. All the intricate details about the case and the investigation that ensued are explored in Investigation Discovery’s ‘The Murder Tapes: Murder at Sunrise,’ which also features exclusive and insightful interviews with the deceased elderly woman’s loved ones and the officials linked to the investigation.
Evelyn Murray-Bailey Was Found Dead in Her Home by Her Caregiver
Hilda Jump and Donald E. Murray welcomed Evelyn Ramona Bailey (née Murray) into the world in the form of a little bundle of joy on January 4, 1924. Raised in a seemingly loving and supportive household, she grew into a compassionate and sincere individual. Being a sociable person, Evelyn had the ability to make new friends easily and to light up even the dullest of rooms with her mere presence. After completing her studies with flying colors, she landed a job as a nurse’s aide before becoming a phlebotomist for Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn, New York.
At some point in her adulthood, Evelyn tied the knot with the love of her life, Albert Bailey, with whom she raised five daughters — Carole Connor, Louise Cumberbatch, Doresia, Allison, and Indra — and a son named Leonard Cumberbatch. In her free time, the devoted matriarch loved singing, ice-skating, cooking, and spending quality time with her loved ones. After working in the medical field for decades, she retired and relocated to the 6800 block of Fox Meadow Road in the unincorporated community of Lochearn in Baltimore County, Maryland.
Having lived a fulfilling and healthy life, Evelyn was enjoying her retirement when her life was abruptly ended in early March 2020. On March 4, when her caregiver entered the residence, she found 96-year-old Evelyn covered in her own blood. The caregiver called 911 and reported the situation to the authorities. As the officers rushed to the scene of the crime, they found the elderly woman dead with a sharp force trauma to her upper body, which was determined to be the cause of her death. The detectives collected all the pieces of evidence they could from the site. Given the violent nature of the crime, the authorities launched a homicide investigation in order to get to the bottom of the case.
Someone Close to Evelyn Murray-Bailey Was Identified as a Suspect
As part of the investigation, the detectives spoke with Evelyn Murray-Bailey’s family, friends, and neighbors to gather leads on potential suspects. They learned that she had an unfriendly relationship with her stepdaughter, Indra Teresa Bailey, who was identified as a suspect by the authorities. Armed with enough evidence against her, the police obtained an arrest warrant for the then-62-year-old woman on March 20, 2020. They alerted the locals to look out for a silver 2012 Nissan Rogue, which was seemingly the vehicle she had been driving at the time.

Less than a week later, on March 26, the authorities took Indra into custody and charged her with first-degree murder, first-degree assault, and second-degree assault in connection with the demise of Evelyn Murray-Bailey. As per the police’s theory presented in charging documents, Indra allegedly went to her stepmother’s residence on Fox Meadow Road in the early hours of March 4, 2020, after the caregiver’s night shift was over and she was home alone. It is alleged that Indra then proceeded to kill Evelyn in her sleep, after which she fled the scene. Although a preliminary hearing was scheduled for May 8, 2020, not much is known about the accused. As of 2020, Indra Teresa Bailey was seemingly being held up at the Baltimore County Women’s Detention Center.
