Extracted Episode 5 Recap: Burn Before Reading

The stakes are now higher than ever on Fox’s ‘Extracted’ with just eight contestants remaining after Ashley and Rose‘s emotional exits in the previous episode. The tensions are at an all-time high with the families’ growing worry for their loved ones. With secret alliances in the making and strategies slowly coming to light, the trust of the families and contestants is tested like never before. When the time comes for the former to rank the survivalists from strongest to weakest, every family plays their own game to ensure their person has the best shot at winning. It’s fascinating to see who gains the advantage and how.

The Beginning of the Day is Marked With Breakdowns on One Side and Good Spirits on the Other

The episode starts off with Meagan Delatte Murphy breaking down in tears because she couldn’t even sleep through the night due to the rainwater collecting on her tarp. Every 3 minutes, she had to adjust it to make sure no water collected and destroyed her shelter, and it pained her father to know that he could not even help her. While processing her predicament, she recalls the challenging ski accident that nearly left her paralyzed a few years ago and reveals how her father was with her every step of her recovery. Meanwhile, all the families arrive at the control room of the headquarters to get a good look at what their survivalists have been up to. Faith observes that they are just mere spectators watching their loved ones suffer, and Abby completely agrees.

Additionally, Lance observed that since the previous supply drop, everyone figured out his strategy to downplay Robyn because she had received two gas stoves when, on the other hand, Haley Lindell, who was actually struggling, received nothing. Thus, he began working on salvaging the situation. While speaking with Abby, he predicts that Meagan’s hardships will soon be shipped to Robyn for the next part. Simultaneously, Sean can be seen reminiscing about his home, but surprisingly, his survivalist, Ryan Willis, expresses how he has found himself sleeping better in the solace of the wilderness than even his own king-size bed at home. However, tough times are befalling even his wife as she struggles emotionally with their physical separation and comes to the realization about the entire gravity of the situation. In contrast, Haley is in good spirits, and despite whispers about her being sick, the other families observe that she is quite well, sheltered, and thriving in the wilderness despite the raging storm the night before.

Tensions Rise With a Major Decision Looming on The Families

As the time for the next supply drop approaches, the families start to discuss what the rank of the survivalists should be. This is because not only will this give them an advantage or disadvantage in the supply room, but it also reveals before them what other families think of their players. Everyone agrees that Jake Denison has been doing a pretty good job. They note that he has food and that his shelter is complete. Although he earns respect for that, his brothers feel it might be a subtle warning of being the target. As the discussion progresses, Jake’s brothers remark that Ryan W. should be the first person on the list because he has been having the best time, but his wife disagrees, revealing that he has been complaining about a headache for a few days. With less time on hand, it is now time for the families to decide what their move will be.

In this rising challenge, Blake and Sarah decide to form an alliance with the agreement that none of them would take the other person’s survivalist’s name to rank them the strongest. She further asks him to speak to Roger, and Blake pulls him away to let him know that neither Ryan W.’s family nor his family would vote for Ryan Heavner. to be on the top. To further gain his trust, he admits that he thinks that Jack should be the first, and Roger agrees with that. After the agreement, Blake feels positive about an alliance being formed, and Sarah also perceives that the outcome is not negative. However, Roger turns out to be one who refuses to trust anyone. He and his wife agree that they will do what is best for their son and play their own game. Ultimately, with a unanimous decision, the families agree to rank Jake as the strongest survivor.

They further decide that since Haley also has means for food and a good shelter, she should be the second on the list. When Candace takes Ryan W.’s name in the third position, Sarah feels blindsided. To justify their decision, Candace notes that Ryan W. is still mentally strong, indicating he might not need an extra push. With Meagan being chosen as the weakest one, her family received the first headstart to select the hunting tools for her. While Meagan, Robyn, and Jakoben Thomas received bows and arrows, Woody Kaminer, Ryan W., and Ryan H. ended up receiving slingshots. Last but not least, Haley and Ryan H. were provided with the spears. As the supply drop is completed, a brewing storm unpredictably leads to postponing the hunting trials, heightening the frustrations. However, Ryan W. is psyched for the storm, saying that, finally, there is something to fight against. He continues to whistle and do a little dance in the rain, much to his brother’s dismay, who was quite worried for him.

A Brutal Elimination of Letters Keeps the Emotions Running High

An exciting moment soon unfolds as the families are asked to write letters from their loved ones, and for some, it is the best thing. However, the excitement soon fades as soon as it’s revealed that among the eight letters, only four of the contestants would receive them, while the other four letters would be burned to ashes. The decision is ultimately left in the hands of their family through negotiation. Moving counterclockwise around the fire, each family has to take turns to remove one clothespin of a contestant by which the letters are hanging. The cycle will repeat until only four of the letters remain. Wasting no time, Meagan’s father reasoned that she has been suffering the most, so she must get the letter, to which Terrance agrees, noting that it is a valid point.

On the other hand, Lance volunteers to show his goodwill and retracts from sending Robyn a letter. Similarly, Hayley’s cousin also expresses that she feels that Jake and Ryan H. should get a letter because they did not get anything for the last two supplies. Sarah says that she is willing to keep an empty crate in the next supply drop if she is permitted to send the letter to her husband. With decisions being reached, the round begins, and Haley’s letter goes into the fire alongside Robyn’s. To further add to the fire, Roger and Candace end up picking out both the pins of Jakoben’s letter, letting it go into flames. This left Terrance and David utterly shocked.

What brought more devastation was Haley’s cousins choosing Ryan W’s letter, which was already hanging by one pin. With his letter going up in flames, Sarah is left heartbroken. She discloses that although she loves a good game, she is emotionally traumatized. Haley’s family feels like they just helped Haley backtrack her competitor. Ultimately, Woody, Jake, Meagan, and Ryan H. receive their letters. Emotions run high as they read heartfelt messages, giving them strength and strategy tips. Megan’s dad advises her to increase the slope of her tarp, and Jack is informed of the respect he commands at the headquarters and advised to collect rainwater for drinking. Ryan H. and his parents share an emotional moment from across the screens as they rely on faith to push through. Meanwhile, Sarah and Sean continue to struggle with the harsh reality of the game.

The Emotional Demand of the Game Finally Takes Hold, Leading to a Shocking Extraction

After the letter is burned, Sarah returns to the headquarters, fuming at Natalie and Karly. Both Sean and Sarah agreed they were not cut out to cross their moral boundaries just for the sake of a game. They are both equally suffering, and according to them, if Ryan W. knows about their predicament, he will want to extract himself. Finally, they jointly decide to extract him but are stopped by Abby and Jake’s brothers. They constantly try to persuade them to take at least an hour to contemplate the decision that they are about to take because, according to them, it is purely emotional. When Natalie arrives and asks her if she is the reason they are extracting the survivalist, Sarah blames her. In the end, Ryan W.’s family ultimately decides to extract him, contemplating what he would say in this situation.

When Ryan learns of his extraction, he is entirely blindsided, surprised, and frustrated. He feels that all his work has gone to waste. Although Sean and Sarah agree that he will be pretty upset about it, they also know that he does not want to see her cry. The brother-in-law and sister-in-law share an emotional moment when he reassures her that she did the right thing. Finally, Ryan arrives, and Sarah runs towards him, embracing him tightly. The three spend an emotional moment explaining their decision, but in the end, Ryan is left feeling unsatisfied. He regrets being extracted, and according to him, his efforts are wasted.

On the other hand, back at the headquarters, Ryan’s departure sends shockwaves through the families, and Natalie is completely devastated, blaming herself and breaking into tears. Tension boils over further when Terrance and Lance clash over the morality of their moves, debating whether they should show some goodwill when they are in a competition. The reality is clear to everyone now that ‘Extracted’ is anything but just a survival game. With strategies to plan and family members to support, it is only time to look forward to what the wilderness has in store for them.
