‘F Marry Kill‘ follows Eva Vaugh’s dating spree coinciding with the rise of a mysterious serial killer called Swipe-Right. While two of her dates, Mitch and Norman, are people she is meeting for the first time, Kyle turns out to be her classmate from high school. In an effort to impress her, he plans a picnic-style date, where he brings along a dog named Stewart. While the two try to have a romantic date, the curious dog can be seen frolicking around in the background. This continues till the arrival of a street musician, who prompts Stewart to bark, irritating Kyle to the point of having an altercation with the musician. This event promptly ends the date, and Kyle requests her to give it another shot, promising to bring the dog. Thus, while Stewart doesn’t contribute significantly to the narrative, his presence feels like a breath of fresh air. SPOILERS AHEAD.
Stewart is Likely Freed From Kyle’s Control
Since Stewart does not reappear in the film after the picnic date sequence, his status remains uncertain. However, he is most likely alive at the end of the story, as he is no longer involved with Kyle, who is stabbed in the back by Kelly, the Swipe Right Killer. Moreover, Kyle’s occupation as a veterinarian is revealed to be a farce; instead, he is a pet-sitter, which strongly suggests that Stewart was simply a pet of the people who hired Kyle, who brought the dog along to add to his pretense of being a doctor, while also lightening Eva’s mood, as dogs are generally perceived positively. Thus, Stewart is used as merely a tool in his sitter’s plan to appear nice and appealing to his date. As such, even though unconfirmed, the dog likely returns to his owners following the date.
Kyle’s conduct toward Stewart during his date is questionable at various points. A previous conversation with Eva stands out, where he discusses his fascination with animals, describing them as very compliant. He further adds that a single dose of anesthesia is all it takes for them to dance to his tune. This information visibly alarms her, forcing him to change his narrative to a superficial one, claiming that all pets deserve love and care. Thus, several doubts are raised regarding his treatment of Stewart. While the latter seems energetic throughout the date, there is a chilling possibility that Kyle has been sedating the dog to make sure he stays docile. This amounts to abuse with life-threatening potential, as Kyle is a medical amateur who can harm Stewart. However, as such an instance is never shown or implied, the possibility of it happening remains low.
Kyle’s nature as a prolific liar only harms everyone around him, leading to situations where his other flaws take over, such as his proneness to anger. This is reflected in the scene when Stewart begins to bark during the picnic date, causing his sitter to aggressively shout at him, asking him to knock it off. This comes after his awkward way of holding Stewart, resembling a doctor’s approach. While Kyle may have some experience working under his brother-in-law, who is a veterinarian by profession, a case can be made for this to be another addition to his string of lies, hoping to make it more believable. Thus, with Kyle and his harmful practices out of the picture, Stewart is likely to return to his owners or perhaps be assigned a new pet sitter.
