Faith in the Flames is Based on the True Story of a Nurse From Florida
There is a certain sense of inspiration and giddiness that washes over a viewer when watching a story rooted in real-life events. In Lifetime’s‘ Faith in the Flames: The Nichole Jolly Story,’ this feeling becomes even more pronounced thanks to its resilient protagonist and even more so upon realizing that the narrative is based on a real person. Screenwriter Kelly Fullerton crafted the screenplay based on the true events of the devastating 2018 Camp Fire in Paradise, California. This wildfire, which ignited on November 8, 2018, became the deadliest and most destructive in California’s history. Fueled by strong winds and dry conditions, the fire destroyed thousands of structures and claimed at least 80 lives. Entire communities, including the town of Paradise, were nearly wiped out within hours, leaving tens of thousands displaced.
In an interview shortly after the incident, Nichole recounted the terrifying events of that day. She explained that she had been at Adventist Health Feather River Hospital when word spread that a wildfire had broken out nearby. She and her fellow nurses worked quickly to evacuate around 67 patients and were instructed to take a designated road believed to be safe. However, as she drove down it, the fire quickly surrounded her. Nichole called her husband and told him she thought she was going to die. He urged her to get out of the car and have faith, which she did. She saw her best friend’s car ahead, already engulfed in flames, with its plastic handles melted.
Though she tried to open it, the doors wouldn’t budge. Her pants caught fire, but she was able to run ahead and managed to climb aboard a fire engine. Even that caught fire briefly, but the flames were extinguished. In the hours that followed, Nichole helped anyone she could, offering aid wherever possible, even outside the hospital. Her husband had tried to reach her but was forced to turn back due to the advancing blaze and returned to stay with their children. Though Nichole and her family were safe, they lost many people they knew. Her bravery was widely recognized, and she was hailed as a hero in the aftermath.

Chrissy Metz, who portrays Nichole Jolly in the film, spoke extensively about the demands of taking on such a role. She shared that, despite the challenges, she felt compelled to do it because Nichole’s story deserved to be told with strength and pride. Chrissy also reflected on how different she is from Nichole in real life, admitting that she likely wouldn’t have been able to remain calm or focused in such a crisis. She said, “Truth be told, I didn’t think I could do it. This is a very emotionally and physically demanding role, and I told them, ‘I might not be the right girl for the job.’ I love to portray real women, especially heroic women that might not be recognition in that way, so I decided to do it for Nichole.”
