In Netflix’s ‘Too Much,’ New Yorker Jessica moves to London in the hopes of turning over a new leaf. She is still recovering from a devastating breakup when she meets Felix, an indie musician, who is a part of a band called the Feelers. As the duo spends more time in each other’s presence, their relationship escalates pretty quickly, which makes both of them come to terms with the baggage from their past. In the midst of this, Felix continues to make new music with his band, which represents an important part of his life.
Felix’s Band is Fictional, But His Music is Real
The character of Felix in ‘Too Much’ is loosely inspired by Luis Felber, who co-created the show with his wife, Lena Dunham. While the show reflects Felber and Dunham’s real-life romance, a lot of things about Felix and his journey have been tweaked. This includes the band, Felix and the Feelers. In real life, Felber is also a musician and has been a part of several bands over the years. Currently, however, his most prominent work comes as a solo artist. He performs under the name “Attawalpa.” This is his middle name, but it also represents his Peruvian heritage, as it was also the name of the last Incan king.
Apart from creating and writing, Felber has also given music to the Netflix series. Because music is such an important part of Felix’s journey, it was important to write songs and music that reflected his state of mind in different circumstances. For this, Felber himself wrote the songs, which were performed by Will Sharpe, who plays Felix. While Sharpe is primarily known for his acting, writing, and direction, he has also dabbled in music and does a great job of bringing Felix’s voice alive on the screen. The same songs can also be found under Attawalpa’s music, where Felber gives his voice to the words.
In the story, music plays a significant role in Felix’s life. Even though he loves it, he is also struggling to make money off of it, and the increasing disinterest of his band members creates conflict, which pushes some major plot points of the story. Music also serves as an outlet for him to process his emotions, and his songs often reflect the turbulence inside his mind. Due to his traumatic past and his struggle with substance abuse, a lot of stuff weighs heavy on him, but making music provides him an escape, and this is the one aspect of his life that he holds on to no matter how bad things might get for him otherwise.
