A couple of film enthusiasts are heading to Yorkshire! The filming of BBC’s six-part romantic comedy series ‘Film Club’ will start in Yorkshire, England, in November 2024. Aimee Lou Wood and Ralph Davis, who are making their writing debut with the project, created the show. Wood also headlines the cast.
The plot revolves around Tom and Evie (Wood), who meet at her garage every Thursday for their weekly movie screening ritual. Evie decorates the venue according to the movie of the week, creating elaborate props and color schemes to match. Their de facto film club seems to exist for their shared love of movies. However, their excitement also comes from being able to spend time together with the person they are falling for. Neither of them is aware of the other’s feelings and is too afraid to express themselves.
The narrative progresses with Tom accepting a job offer demanding his presence on the other side of the country, which means that he only has six weeks and six movie nights left with Evie. With a timer placed upon her, the film club host begins mustering her courage to confess her love before she loses him forever. Besides her emotional flux, Evie also has to deal with her loving yet dysfunctional family. Her younger sister, Izzy, and mother, Suz, may be idiosyncratic and annoying, but they support and cheer her on at the end of the day.
Wood won a BAFTA Award for her hilarious performance as Aimee Gibbs in Netflix’s ‘Sex Education.’ She also played Queen Dagan in ‘Seize Them!’ Maya in ‘Alice & Jack,’ and Margaret Harris in ‘Living.’ The talented actress also has a number of projects in the pipeline, including the third season of HBO’s ‘The White Lotus,’ ‘Daddy Issues,’ and ‘Toxic Town.’ When approached about writing her own show, Wood expressed excitement for the project.
“When Ralph and I met a decade ago, we knew pretty much instantly that we wanted to create something together, and this feels deeply organic and idiosyncratic and right,” revealed Wood in a statement. “Jamie at Gaumont has been the most incredible collaborator, and the BBC is the perfect home. Three of the most essential things to me have always been writing stories, watching films, and acting so the fact I get to write a story about watching films and act in it is beyond joyful,” she added.
Davis is known for portraying Ser Leon Estermont in HBO’s ‘House of the Dragon,’ Alexander Norton in ‘Rogue Heroes,’ and Clarence in ‘Life After Life.’ He has known Wood since the early days of their acting career and looks forward to creating the show with her. “I couldn’t be more excited about this,” he said, joining his screenwriting partner. “Aimee and I have been speaking about making something together since we met at drama school. To be doing this together is a dream,” he added.
Some notable shows and films lensed in Yorkshire include Netflix’s ‘Bridgerton,’ Hulu’s ‘The Great,’ ‘Utopia,’ and ‘The Royals.’
