Created by Bernardo Izaza Capdevielle, Netflix’s ‘Final Project,’ or ‘Proyecto Final,’ is a Spanish-language teen psychological thriller series that revolves around the events of one unfortunate night. Tamara, a new student at Campos Academy, suddenly finds herself in the eye of the storm, with cyber and physical bullying taking its toll on her psyche. Her life begins to change when she meets Xavi, the sports star of the school, but what awaits her is a whirlwind of chaos. By the end of season 1, Xavi and Tamara confess to their love for each other after discovering that another student, Daniel, was conspiring against them. As the police arrest Daniel, Pato, and Samantha, peace returns to the campus. While Netflix has not renewed the show for a sequel as of writing, in the best-case scenario, fans can expect season 2 to release sometime around late 2027 to early 2028.
Final Project Season 2 Can be About Daniel’s Potential Escape
While ‘Final Project’ season 1 concludes much of the main plotline, there are still some loose threads that need addressing, and can be brought to the front with a potential season 2. Though Netflix has not greenlit a sequel as of writing, it would be far from unusual for them to do so. Mexican series like ‘Control Z’ and ‘Rebelde’ have spawned several seasons owing to their popularity among younger viewers, and we can see something similar happen with ‘Final Project’ if the story resonates with fans. What makes this show unlike others, though, is its heavy focus on mystery, and given that everything is revealed by the end of the season, there isn’t a lot that the show can organically do from this point onwards.
If there is one major ambiguity to the story still left, it’s the mysterious exit of Daniel. After being revealed as the true antagonist of the show, he attacks Xavi and nearly kills Tamara, before disappearing somewhere in the background like he was never there. Initially, we are led to believe that he simply escaped, but that idea is thwarted later, when a police officer reveals that Daniel has been apprehended. The fact that all of this happens off-screen raises some questions, especially given this show’s history of playing with expectations. A potential sequel can very well return with Daniel as the villain, explaining how he somehow escaped custody and is now back to finish his documentary, even if it means fighting Xavi and Tamara once again.
Final Project Season 2 is Likely to Continue Without Two of the Five Main Characters
If ‘Final Project’ is greenlit for a second season, fans can expect a few major shakeups in the cast list. While the first installment is largely defined by the dynamic of the various actors involved, it is also the reason that, by the finale, many of the characters have vastly unexpected fates. While the show is incomplete without actors Daniela Martínez Caballero and Tristán Maze reprising their roles as Tamara AKA Violeta and Xavi, respectively, the status of the remaining two main characters is still up in the air. Given that both Pato and Samantha end up behind bars, chances are that actors Ian Sparrowe and Isabella Tena have bid the show goodbye.
The wild-card entry in a hypothetical season 2 remains that of actor Virgilio Delgado, whose character, Daniel, is caught off-screen, but still has a chance of making a surprise comeback. Delgado doesn’t get a lot of screentime after being revealed as the main antagonist, and a sequel can be the chance to make things right. Given that the graduation ceremony has already happened, it is unlikely for the show to return to the school setting. This means that a lot of actors, including Monica Phlen and Paulina Raca, who play student characters, are unlikely to reprise their roles.
Final Project Season 2 Might Feature a Long-Distance Relationship
As the title implies, ‘Final Project’ is about Tamara and Xavi’s graduation from Campos Academy, which leaves a potential second season in a difficult position, in terms of story construction. That said, there is a very easy solution to this conundrum, and that is to set the show in Xavi and Tamara’s college years. While the duo has plans to go to different colleges and pursue different disciplines, there can easily be a plotline where they continue in a long-distance relationship. The idea of cyber-abuse and paranoia feeds into such a scenario even better, as most of Xavi and Tamara’s conversations will now be filtered via a screen. That said, without any clear direction for the love story going forward, charting a new arc might prove to be difficult.
Another detail introduced in the first season that can be expanded in the sequel is Xavi’s father’s career. After he leaves the house, Xavi retaliates by sharing important legal documents with the police, where it is explicitly shown that Xavi’s dad arranged for Tamara to be forced out of her old school. While he is likely to get arrested for that, the real center of the moment is Tamara, who gets vindicated years after facing injustice. ‘Final Project’ has, in large part, been a story about how easy it is not to reflect on one’s actions and perpetuate abuse. While Xavi is able to break free of that vicious cycle, his former friends, Pato and Samantha, aren’t as fortunate. A second season is likely to bring a new face into the fray, providing one more opportunity for a redemption arc of sorts.
