Forever Season 2: What to Expect if It Gets Renewed?

Justin and Keisha’s teenage love story comes to a bittersweet conclusion with season 1 of ‘Forever.’ The Netflix show charts their relationship from the early days of New Year’s parties and misunderstandings to the monumental highlights like the year-ending proms. Thus, we get to see the two young adults evolve alongside their relationship as they dip their toes into their first romance and intimacy experiences. Nonetheless, despite the depths of their feelings for one another, life post-high school ends up setting them up for diverging paths. Still, even though their relationship doesn’t manage to last a lifetime, it helps them unearth their true, authentic selves in profound ways. Consequently, fans are bound to be craving a continuation of the tale. While no official announcement for a renewal has yet arrived, there are a number of routes that a potential season 2 can take.

Forever Season 2 Can Expand Upon Justin and Keisha’s Lives in Adulthood

‘Forever’ finds its biggest strength in Justin and Keisha’s characters as well as the electric chemistry between them. Therefore, it would make sense if the show’s future season stays with these characters and explores more of their lives once out of high school. Of course, for Keisha, this would include assignment deadlines at Howard University alongside crazy college parties and assorted misadventures. On the other hand, the narrative could follow Justin throughout his break year as he continues pursuing music with Rodney. Even though this would mean the two protagonists would stay in their own bubbles, at least for some time, it might be a great opportunity to depict the diverse realities of life outside high school for teenagers.

Furthermore, there’s always a chance that Justin and Keisha’s paths might end up crossing once more. Still, even if they’re unable to rekindle their past romance off-the-bat, it would be interesting to see these two take on new relationships and romances on their own. In this area, the show can even take inspiration from its literary source material, Judy Blume’s 1975 novel ‘Forever…,’ and introduce a character from the pages: Theo. In the book, Theo is the love interest of Katherine, Keisha’s counterpart. Even though the latter’s story diverges in significant ways from her bookish equivalent, this could be an interesting thread to follow as it would showcase how Keisha’s relationship with Justin has changed her approach to dating.

However, if a potential season 2 chooses to pull the audience back into Justin and Keisha’s exciting romantic dynamic, it could still propose intriguing avenues. Blume’s novel operates on the idea that love doesn’t need to be everlasting in order to be meaningful. As a result, it’s crucial for the book’s protagonists not to end up together. Even though the show explores much the same concept, it still manages to leave out some hope for a continuation of Justin and Keisha’s romance. Therefore, it would be fun to scrutinize the idea of following a time jump to witness the pair falling back in love with each other years down the line.

Forever Season 2 Could go Down a Drastically Different Route

Since there haven’t yet been any firm announcements regarding a season 2 for ‘Forever,’ the details about a potential continuation remain ambiguous. While it would be conventional and expected to follow the protagonists from season 1 into the renewal, there’s always a chance that the show might opt for an anthology route. By doing so, the narrative will get the opportunity to explore similar themes of teen sexuality in the modern cultural landscape through a different perspective. While this could mean a return for the central cast, including leads Lovie Simone and Michael Cooper Jr. as different characters, it could also bring an entirely new cast to the screen.

If this happens, the show will get to explore a whole different culture and setting with exciting new characters and storylines. For instance, instead of the previous 2018 era, a new season could bring the story into the 2020s, focusing on Gen-Z stories in a more recent light. Not only will this keep invigorating and refreshing, but it will also allow ‘Forever’ to appeal to a new demographic with its universal thematic resonance. As such, there are a number of ways that the show can evolve if Netflix officials greenlight season 2. Yet, as of the time of writing, it’s still relatively early to arrive at any concrete assumptions.
