The episode titled ‘Unmasking the Monster’ of NBC’s ‘Dateline’ focuses on the violent attack on Dana Beatty (then Dana Sandbo), inside her home on August 1, 1989, in Cincinnati, Ohio. The case remained unsolved for more than 35 years before forensic evidence connected the attack to a former doctor, Frederick Louis Tanzer. The episode features interviews with the officials who worked on the case, discussing how they identified the suspect and made a breakthrough decades after the crime. Furthermore, it features an interview with Dana, who shared about the impact of the attack on her life.
Officials Identified Frederick Tanzer as the Prime Suspect in a 1989 Attack
Frederick Louis Tanzer was born sometime in 1959. After graduating from high school, he attended the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. Upon earning a medical degree, he began his residency in Internal Medicine at the university hospital in 1988 and completed it in 1991. Following that, Frederick began practicing medicine in Ohio. He continued his practice in Ohio, Colorado, and Kansas, and later became associated with several hospitals, including Hutchinson Regional Medical Center and Highland District Hospital. Around 1981, Frederick got into a relationship and soon got married. Yet the growing distance between him and his partner led to their divorce in 2008. Reports state that Frederick tied the knot again in 2009, but the details regarding his current marital status remain unclear.

Frederick came under scrutiny from the authorities in 2024 as the Cincinnati Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) investigated an attack that happened on August 1, 1989. On that day, Dana Beatty (then known as Dana Sandbo) had just arrived home from work when she was attacked by a man. According to court records, the man sexually assaulted her over a course of more than five and a half hours. Further official records specify that after Dana survived the attack, she contacted the detectives and told them that the attacker was white, around six feet tall, and had dark brown hair and an athletic build. Experts then collected evidence, including semen that was left by the attacker. Although the case went cold due to a lack of leads, it changed shortly before 2023 when advanced DNA technology was used to develop a DNA profile from the evidence.
In 2024, the forensic evidence led officials to Frederick. According to court affidavits and law enforcement records, investigators collected a DNA sample from a coffee cup Frederick discarded at a local BMV store, which turned out to be a match to the DNA profile of the semen found at the 1989 crime scene. He was finally identified as the prime suspect in the case. As per federal documents, when Frederick was questioned, he denied seeing or interacting with Dana on August 1, 1989. It is worth noting that the statute of limitations for the 1989 crimes expired around 1995. Frederick was arrested on December 11, 2024, and charged with two counts of making or using a false document or writing and four counts of making false statements to federal officers.
Frederick Tanzer is Incarcerated at a Federal Prison in Ohio Today
After Frederick was taken into custody, he was held at the Shelby County Jail in Ohio. Following that, authorities conducted a search warrant at his home, where they discovered several items such as zip ties, restraints, a black hat, and a gag. In federal court filings submitted during detention proceedings, prosecutors alleged that Frederick had previously drugged and sexually assaulted women. The authorities expressed concern regarding potential unreported sexual assaults. However, it is essential to note that no additional criminal charges were brought in connection with those assertions.

As per federal prosecutorial filings submitted during his court proceedings, attorneys alleged that Frederick contacted sex workers using a burner phone. The prosecution continued building a strong case against him and discovered that Dana was a close friend of his former wife. In May 2025, he filed a motion seeking dismissal of several counts of making false statements, arguing that his answers constituted a single continuous conversation rather than separate offenses, and therefore, they should be counted as a single offense. However, the judge ultimately denied that motion.
On September 5, 2025, Frederick avoided a jury trial by pleading guilty to three counts of making false statements to federal agents. As part of the plea agreement, he admitted to breaking into Dana’s home on August 1, 1989, and sexually assaulting her for more than five and a half hours after binding her. However, he was never charged or convicted of the 1989 rape since the statute of limitations for that crime had already expired. On January 28, 2026, the defendant was sentenced to 15 years in federal prison (5 years each for the three counts). As of writing, Frederick is serving his sentence at the Federal Correctional Institution Elkton (FCI Elkton) in Lisbon, Ohio. His current release date is scheduled to be August 3, 2037.
