Gajab Raat Plot Synopsis

The entire story unfolds over the course of a single night and begins at midnight in Delhi’s Connaught Place, where SI Ajay Nirvit, a corrupt local cop, raids a hotel for being a sex work hub. Elsewhere, an unnamed and gravely injured young girl is taken by CBI officer Naveen Madhok and his men in a car to eventually kill her. Before it is too late, the girl jumps out of the car, giving bystanders the impression that she was thrown out. Naveen and his men flee from the scene, and the bystanders record videos of the girl. The video goes viral, igniting social media debates about women’s safety within minutes. Ajay is commanded by his superiors to head to the site immediately and shift the girl to Mansarovar Hospital. Ajay does so reluctantly, as he has already promised a sex worker named Rosie that he will pay her a visit.

Upon reaching the hospital, the girl is immediately operated on and saved in the nick of time by the doctors. Soon, Naveen arrives and informs Ajay that he wishes to take over the case on behalf of the CBI. Naveen is reporting his actions to Sabharwal, who works under a prominent politician named Suneeta Chaudhary. Naveen lies to Ajay that the girl’s name is Natalia and that she is the mole of a drug lord. Neha Prabhu, a social worker from a prominent NGO and a member of the women’s commission, also arrives, saying she is there to ensure the girl’s safety. Ajay is deeply confused about the situation and hopes to learn more about the girl. He is shocked when Naveen makes him an offer of 5 crore rupees to kill the girl. When Ajay is about to murder the girl in the ward, the doctors arrive, forcing him to abandon the plan temporarily.

Later, Karan Gill of the NIA shows up at the hospital and lies to Ajay that the girl’s name is Veronica and that she is an activist. Not sure of whom to trust and still confused about the girl’s identity, Ajay shifts her to an isolated room after two masked assassins in doctors’ uniforms unsuccessfully try to take her out. Jeet and Maheep Sahni, an aging married couple, reach the hospital and claim that the girl is their daughter, Arya Sahni. Ajay lets them in and also confirms through Vinayak, a Delhi Cyber Cell cop, that the girl is indeed Arya. It is revealed that Arya is a journalist who got involved in something dangerous and unexpected. Meanwhile, Suneeta Chaudhary desperately hopes to see Arya killed as quickly as possible.

Gajab Raat Ending: Why is Arya Sahni Targeted? What Does She Discover in Poland?

Right from the moment Arya Sahni is admitted to Mansarovar Hospital, she is targeted by multiple parties who wish to see her dead. Arya is a young journalist driven to ascertain the truth, irrespective of the cost. She works for a news outlet named Med News and travels to Poland to cover a major international conference discussing the handling of pandemics. One of the main speakers of the event is Suneeta Chaudhary, a prominent Indian politician, who promises that her unnamed organization will always be ready to face public health emergencies and cooperate with foreign governments. Arya, however, has caught wind that Suneeta is hiding something. After asking Suneeta a question regarding pandemic preparedness during an open forum at the conference, Arya keeps a close eye on the politician.

She learns that Suneeta is going to meet Richard Hawkins and Adesh Solanki, two prominent businessmen. When Suneeta’s bodyguards escort her to a private room at The President Hotel, Arya follows them and requests a short interview with Suneeta. After the politician reluctantly agrees, Arya hides a small camera inside a book and heads to the private room to conduct the interview. The journalist’s real purpose is not to do the interview, but to place the book at such an angle where the hidden camera can record the scheduled secret meeting between Suneeta, Adesh, and Richard. After asking a few random interview questions, Arya leaves, heads to the roof, and tracks the camera footage discreetly. What happens next shocks her, as a massive scheme unfolds.

Suneeta, Adesh, and Richard, unaware of the camera, discuss a major illegal money deal related to vaccines. The idea is for Adesh to use the media to deliberately spread panic in India about a new virus, driving public opinion in favor of vaccine import. Suneeta agrees to use her power to convince the Indian government to facilitate the import of vaccines from the company owned by Richard. Thus, all three stand to earn crores from this illegal deal, which comes at the cost of the common people. Having seen the footage, Arya scrambles to secure the camera and the evidence it contains.

She convinces a housekeeping staff member to lend her the hotel’s uniform and waits till Suneeta is out of the room. Arya then heads to the room, retrieves the book with the hidden camera, and also photographs documents relevant to the deal. On the way to the airport, Arya also records a video as a backup, explaining everything in the style of a news report. The twist in the tale occurs when she calls her editor, Anoop Sarkar, and tells him about the deal and the evidence. It is revealed that Anoop is in cahoots with Suneeta’s trusted deputy, Sabharwal. Anoop tells Sabharwal about the whole ordeal, and the information eventually reaches Suneeta.

To save her deal, reputation, and position, Suneeta orchestrates a plan to kill Arya as soon as she lands in Delhi. To carry out the deed, Suneeta hires Naveen Madhok, the corrupt CBI officer. Through Sabharwal, Suneeta also offers Ajay a huge sum of money if he is willing to kill Arya at the hospital. Suneeta also makes a similar offer to Neha Prabhu and promises political benefits. Karan Gill of the NIA also gets involved in the situation, hoping to benefit from it. Ultimately, Arya is targeted for her courage in revealing the truth, doing her duty honestly, and standing up to power.

Does Ajay Nirvit Save Arya Sahni? How?

The situation at Mansarovar Hospital gets more and more tense by the minute, as Arya’s life hangs in the balance. Although Ajay agrees to kill her at one point in exchange for money, he eventually changes his mind. Initially, he abstains from killing her because the doctors arrive in the room when he is about to give Arya a lethal injection. Later, Ajay becomes more convinced that he should spare Arya’s life after he sees her desperate parents reach the hospital and cry for their daughter’s safety. Before jumping out of the car, Arya swallows the memory card of her phone, which contains details about Suneeta’s deal. During a medical intervention, the doctor finds the card and hands it over to Ajay.

Soon, Ajay reaches out to Vinayak of the Police Cyber Cell to discreetly decipher the card. After learning the truth about Arya’s purpose and the deal, Ajay makes up his mind to save her at any cost. When he refuses to kill her, Naveen sends his CBI team to assault and kill Ajay before things escalate. Ajay fights alone and neutralizes the attackers, thus sabotaging Naveen’s plan. Ajay also warns Neha and Karan to stay away from Arya, as she is under his protection. Despite his selfish intentions at the beginning of the journey, Ajay now stands resolute in his decision to save Arya from a horrible fate. The tension rises when Ajay refuses to follow his superior officer, Rana’s orders.

Though Rana assumes that Ajay will kill the girl instantly for money, Ajay’s decision turns the situation upside down. Ajay also requests Rana to send other cops as backup. The most crucial part of Ajay’s mission comes when Suneeta arrives at the hospital with her full force of security personnel. She heads to the room where Arya is being treated and orders Ajay to kill her. He instantly refuses, even after cash offers. Ajay requests Suneeta to head to the basement to talk more privately. Once there, the two of them have a long conversation about unforeseen events unfolding in front of them.

Suneeta humiliates Ajay for being a low-ranking cop and then makes him a bigger cash offer to murder Arya. But Ajay remains standing and doesn’t budge. Sensing that the best way to stop Suneeta is through blackmail, Ajay reveals that he is in possession of the secret video of the deal. He threatens to share the video with the media and the public unless Suneeta spares Arya’s life. Despite all the power she holds, Suneeta is unable to counter Ajay and agrees to let him take Arya out of the hospital. Ajay, along with Arya’s parents, brings her out on a stretcher and moves her to the ambulance, ready to take her to a safer place. Although Arya comes close to being murdered on several occasions, she is saved by Ajay’s unlikely and courageous efforts.

What Happens to the Footage? Why Does Suneeta Chaudhary Resign?

After agreeing to let Arya go, Suneeta faces a helpless situation. She now knows that Ajay will always have control over her because of the incriminating footage. The video remains safe in Ajay’s possession, as it is his only bargaining chip to keep Suneeta at bay. Other than Ajay, Vinayak of the Cyber Cell also has the footage, thus making the situation more dangerous for Suneeta. At this point, Suneeta is forced to make a tough decision in order to save her image. She addresses the media outside the hospital and spins a false story. She claims that she undertook a medical test in Poland, which revealed that she needed further medical support. Using this as an excuse, Suneeta resigns on medical grounds, avoiding any controversy or suspicion that would expose her role in the deal.

Does Ajay Nirvit Reform Himself?

Ajay shows great courage in saving Arya’s life, but that doesn’t indicate that he is a fully reformed cop. He understands that his world is dirty and immoral. He decides to save Arya only because he knows that she has sacrificed everything for the right reasons. At one point, Ajay is tempted to kill Arya for money, but circumstances force him to change his mind. Now that Arya is safe, Ajay will have to resume his daily police routine and face the system repeatedly. He understands that he is corrupt, but also recognizes that moral compromises are necessary to survive in his world.

The movie doesn’t portray Ajay as a hero, but rather as a gray character who knows how to take control of situations. During the end credits, Ajay gets a call from Rosie, the sex worker whom he had promised to visit. She tells him that though she has sex for money, she still wishes to be honest with her clients. Ajay tells her that she is indeed an honest individual, unlike so many others that he meets in his police department. Thus, he is still a morally compromised man who knows how the world works.
