Netflix’s ‘Gandhari’ follows Bani Sikdar, a seemingly unassuming woman who is married to Gokul. They are parents to Mishty, a curious and lively young girl who is deeply attached to Bani. During a family trip, Mishty is suddenly abducted at a railway station in the town of Joypurra. Bani immediately chases the kidnapper but suffers a severe injury that temporarily takes away her sight. With Mishty missing, Bani and Gokul turn to the local police for help, only to find themselves facing an ineffective system. When they begin to realize that the kidnapping is connected to something much more sinister, the couple decides to take matters into their own hands.
Bani must fight not only a difficult police department, but also the limitations caused by her eyesight. With several suspects emerging and Mishty’s fate uncertain, Bani relies on her intelligence and other abilities to hopefully overcome the obstacles standing between her and Mishty. Joypurra plays a crucial role in the story, serving as a battleground where morals clash and fates are determined. SPOILERS AHEAD.
Joypurra Hides Many Secrets That Test Bani’s Resolve in Unexpected Ways
At first glance, Joypurra appears to be a friendly town. However, it is home to many mysteries and seemingly strange groups of people. The fictional town becomes a character in itself, challenging Bani at every turn. The cops of Joypurra are largely corrupt and choose to serve powerful individuals who operate outside the boundaries of law. The narrative utilizes Joypurra as a unique storytelling tool. The town is a maze that keeps getting increasingly complicated to decipher. The story’s grounded feel stems from the way in which the town is portrayed. Joypurra is characterized by its narrow lanes, secretive establishments, buildings, and a population that always seems to be in crisis. The town is also home to the Bahurupis, a community of street performers who are deeply devoted to Chaumukhi Devi, a mythical goddess.
The streets hold more questions than answers for Bani as she goes through incredible stress to trace Mishty’s whereabouts. The film’s treatment of Joypurra has much in common with the way director Sujoy Ghosh’s popular movie ‘Kahaani’ views Kolkata. In ‘Kahaani,’ Vidya Bagchi is a woman who navigates a big city full of secrets to learn the whereabouts of a loved one. Similar to how Kolkata tests Vidya, Joypurra challenges Bani at every turn when she desperately strives to rescue Mishty. Joypurra seems real because of its people, flawed streets, and dark corners, turning it into a turbulent place where crime and morality are always intertwined.
Bani realizes that she must truly become a part of the town if she wishes to get close to the truth about Mishty. Joypurra also serves as a point of tension for several parties, as it is located near an international border. The social, political, economic, and cultural aspects of the town represent Indian social realities in a layered manner. The film depicts Joypurra in a style that suggests that the town has a will of its own, controlling the destinies of many. Ultimately, Joypurra is a complex place where several social realities intertwine in strange ways.
