Channel 4’s Generation Z Begins Filming in Fairwater

The filming of Channel 4’s upcoming horror comedy series ‘Generation Z’ has begun in Fairwater, Wales. The zombie drama is set “in a small British town, where tensions come to a head when a mysterious military convoy crashes outside the Sunnywise Retirement Home. The vehicles were carrying a toxic substance, which, as a result of the crash, leaks into the local environment and infects the residents of the retirement community,” as per the official synopsis.

“The symptoms of this infection quickly manifest – an overwhelming appetite for raw flesh. They’re old, they’re angry and they’re on the rampage. As the military scrambles to control the outbreak and keep everything out of the media spotlight, a group of regular teenagers find themselves in the thick of the battle against these flesh-eating baby boomers,” the synopsis states further.

Fairwater, where the shoot has commenced, is a district and community in Cardiff, the capital city of Wales. Cardiff has previously hosted the filming of several television shows such as ‘Doctor Who,’ ‘His Dark Materials,’ ‘A Discovery of Witches,’ ‘War of the Worlds,’ ‘Gavin & Stacey,’ ‘Torchwood,’ and ‘Upstairs Downstairs.’

The six-episode series is written and directed by Ben Wheatley, whose recent release ‘Meg 2: The Trench’ is a box-office hit. The filmmaker is also known for directing films such as ‘In the Earth,’ ‘Rebecca,’ ‘Free Fire,’ and ‘High-Rise,’ and his work on television shows such as ‘Strange Angel,’ ‘Ideal,’ and ‘The Wrong Door.’ The cast of the show has not been revealed yet.

‘Generation Z’ was commissioned by Channel 4 in 2019. However, the development of the show was met with delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In August 2023, Wheatley confirmed during a screening of ‘Meg 2: The Trench’ that he was going to start working on the show soon. The series is produced by The Forge, known for producing the shows ‘Becoming Elizabeth,’ ‘The Last Post,’ and ‘Collateral.’

Wheatley serves as an executive producer along with Mark Pybus and George Faber from The Forge. The director had spoken about his association with Channel 4 and The Forge during the announcement of the show and said, “I’m excited to be working with Channel 4 and The Forge. Generation Z is my first original created TV project and I couldn’t think of better partners.” George Faber joined the filmmaker and said, “We’re thrilled to be partnering with the hugely talented Ben Wheatley on his epic comic horror series and very much look forward to discovering how Generation Z will fight the plague of Baby Boomer zombies who are after their young flesh.”
