Giuliano Mignini: Where is the Public Prosecutor Now?

With Hulu’s ‘The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox’ exploring how the titular individual found herself in a battle for justice after being wrongfully convicted of murder, we get a drama that is intriguing. It revolves around the November 2007 homicide of British exchange student Meredith Kercher in her Perugia, Italy, home, only for one of her roommates to soon be deemed a key figure behind it. Pubblico Ministero (AKA Public Prosecutor) Giuliano Mignini played a key role throughout this ordeal, especially as he genuinely believed at the time that Amanda was involved in one way or another.

Giuliano Mignini’s Initial Life Plans Were Different From His True Calling

It was on April 13, 1950, when Giuliano Mignini was born to a high school teacher hailing from a family of sculptors, enabling him to learn the significance of compassion as well as hard work early on. According to reports, since he grew up in Perugia, which is right in central Italy, he was also aware of his surroundings and the socio-political climate, driving him to decide he wanted to serve his nation. He actually wanted to pursue a career in the Air Force but was rejected from the Academy owing to a form of red-green color blindness, leading him to find his true calling in the world of law.

Giuliano actually went on to earn his Juris Doctorate from the University of Perugia before ultimately passing the magistrate’s exam in 1979 and kickstarting his career as a judge. According to reports, he served in the courts of Pisa and Terni for several years, gaining experience in both civil and criminal cases before ultimately deciding to return home around a decade later. In other words, he relocated to Perugia in 1989, where he gradually climbed the ladder to become an investigator and criminal prosecutor in the early 2000s. Therefore, he was serving in this position when Meredith Kercher was murdered in her home in early November 2007.

Giuliano Mignini Has Been Involved in Many High Profile Cases Over the Years

While Giuliano is most known across the world for his involvement in the case of Meredith Kercher, especially as in Italy a criminal prosecutor also leads the investigations, he has been involved in many other cases, too. Locally in Italy, prior to the homicide, the most infamous case was arguably that of the Monster of Florence. This was the name coined by the local media for the serial killer who was active within Florence between 1968 and 1985, but despite the fact that over 5 decades have gone by since it first started, it sadly remains unsolved to this day.

As per reports, Giuliano was actually involved in this matter through the 1985 death of Francesco Narducci, a doctor who drowned in Lake Trasimeno around a month after the last homicides related to the Monster of Florence. He opened an investigation into this ordeal as a cold case in 2001, as he suspected him to be a homicide victim connected to the serial killer, only to soon be joined by prosecutors too. In the end, although his efforts led to the arrest of over 20 individuals on charges related to cover-up and obstruction of justice, they were all dropped in 2010 owing to the expiration of the statute of limitations.

Furthermore, in 2010, not long after Giuliano had secured Amanda Knox’s conviction by asserting she was a party girl who had allegedly had her roommate killed in a kind of revenge sex game, he was involved in the case of Brigitta Bulgari. Brigitta, an adult entertainer, was arrested on serious charges of child pornography after a video of teenage boys touching her breast while she was performing in a strip club came to light. She was held in jail for 11 days, and then the charges against her dropped since she was unaware that the boys touching her were minors and being filmed, and that she was “just trying to make a living.”

Giuliano Mignini’s Family is Seemingly His Top Priority Today

Following years of serving as an investigative prosecutor, Giuliano moved forward to serve as the head of the Anti-Mafia Prosecution department before becoming an Appeals Prosecution Officer in 2013. Since then, though, it appears as if he has retired and is currently leading a cozy, quiet, stable life in his hometown while surrounded by his wife, his four daughters, and their respective families. In other words, he is a proud husband, father, and grandfather today, whose top priority is to be there for his family in any way they require. He also seems to be making the most of his free time these days by enjoying his passion for classic music, art, literature, animals, and traveling, things he didn’t have much time for during his busy days at work.

While Giuliano was convicted of abuse of office in 2008 in a case connected to the Francesco Narducci death investigations, for which he was sentenced to 16 months in prison, he was acquitted on appeal in 2014. Moreover, despite his statements and beliefs, Amanda Knox’s conviction was also overturned in the early 2010s before she was officially exonerated in March 2015. In a strange turn of events, though, while she considered him her “Boogeyman” at one point in time, they are now friends. She had started the correspondence between them simply because she wanted him to see she wasn’t the kind of person he believed her to be, and it led to them developing an unlikely friendship. In fact, she even went back to Perugia to see him in 2022 and forgave him for good. Giuliano has also since publicly admitted that he now thinks she had nothing to do with Meredith’s murder, but believes that she was probably still present when it happened.
