Gloria Marmolejo’s Remains Were Discovered in a Desert in New Mexico
On July 28, 1955, Mary and Salvador Rodriguez welcomed their bundle of joy, Gloria Marmolejo, into the world. She grew up in a tight-knit Hispanic family alongside her brothers, Morris Espinosa, Mark, Ricky, and Conrad Huerta. With a heart of gold, she was always compassionate toward others and let her faith guide her through life’s hardships. After completing her initial education, Gloria began her professional life by joining the Texas Workforce Commission as the Integrated Service Area Manager. She served there for about 27 years before retiring. She then pursued a Bachelor of Business Administration at the University of Phoenix and graduated in 2005. Gloria eventually aspired to venture into a new endeavor as a Real Estate Agent at Coldwell Banker.

In the early 1970s, Gloria met Armando Marmolejo, and they soon fell in love. On October 11, 1975, they got married, and over the next few years, they welcomed their sons, Manny and David Marmolejo, into their lives. Sadly, cracks began forming in Gloria and Armando’s union, leading to their divorce. Following that, he moved to Phoenix, Arizona, where he remarried. Armando’s wife already had an 11-year-old daughter, Mariah Wilson, from a previous relationship. In the meantime, David and his family joined his father and Manny in Arizona for work. Both brothers grew close to Mariah, and she was welcomed into the family. According to reports, David and his wife separated in 2007, and he went away to Hawaii to live with his girlfriend. When that relationship ended, Gloria welcomed David into her home in El Paso, Texas.
In July 2009, Gloria visited Manny at his home, and on July 25, she drove for six hours to return home. However, her family became concerned when they were unable to contact her. On July 28, she was officially reported missing, beginning the search. Detectives discovered that her bank had no activity since July 25, her phone was turned off, and her car was missing. On July 26, her red SUV was found in a school parking lot, and her purse and mobile were found inside. On July 31, a woman walking along a dirt-bike trail discovered human remains in the desert in Santa Teresa, New Mexico. When officials arrived, they found a woman’s decomposing remains, with a plastic bag over her head. Ultimately, Manny identified the remains as Gloria’s. The autopsy determined her cause of death as asphyxiation by strangulation.
Gloria’s Killer Was Arrested Based on Phone Records and Witness Statements
When the search for Gloria first began, investigators examined her home in El Paso, where they discovered necklace beads and a smear of blood in the garage, aside from a suspected blood stain on a cabinet. According to court documents, her neighbor told officials that around 5:30 am on July 26, 2009, they heard Gloria’s garage door open and saw her vehicle pull out. As per the witness statements, they reportedly saw a younger woman driving away with the car. Police records state that Mark told detectives the relationship between Gloria and David had become strained after his former girlfriend told the 54-year-old that David and Mariah had an intimate relationship. In March 2009, after David moved into his mother’s home, she gave him an ultimatum to stay away from his stepsister, per reports.

According to court records, Mark told law enforcement that when Gloria was visiting Manny in Arizona, she asked her brother to check whether Mariah was at her home with David. As per Mark’s statements on the show, he allegedly learned from others that Mariah was staying at his sister’s home. Investigative reports suggest that when officials questioned David, he stated that around 5 pm on July 25, he was at a movie theater with Mariah and some of their friends when Gloria asked him to unlock the door for her. In his statements, he claimed that he returned home and stayed there talking to Gloria for approximately 20 minutes before returning to the theater. Official records state that during Mariah’s interrogation, she revealed that David had been gone for 3 hours after leaving the theater, which contradicted his claims.

Police records indicate that Mariah informed detectives that a cut on her hand led to the smearing of blood in Gloria’s garage. She claimed that David was a violent person and physically abused her. Digital forensic experts reportedly discovered from David’s cell phone tower records that his location was near the crime scene around 1:37 am on July 26. According to court records, when questioned about his whereabouts that day, he insisted he was sleeping at home. Prosecutors eventually offered Mariah immunity in exchange for her cooperation. As per reports, she confessed that while returning home on July 25, David told her he had killed Gloria after having an argument regarding his relationship with Mariah. In September 2009, he was taken into custody and charged with murder.
David Marmolejo is Serving His Sentence at a Texas Prison Facility Today
The first jury trial of David began in October 2010, during which the prosecution claimed he killed Gloria because she was against his romantic relationship with his younger stepsister, Mariah Wilson. They further emphasized that his mother intended to remove him from her residence. On the contrary, the defense contended that the prosecution was relying heavily on circumstantial evidence and claimed that the defendant wasn’t involved in the crime. The proceedings ultimately ended in a mistrial after the jury didn’t reach a unanimous verdict. David’s second trial began in March 2011, during which the prosecution highlighted Mariah’s statements during interrogation. Court records state that Mariah told law enforcement that her sexual relationship with David began when she was just 14.

According to Mariah’s statements during the interview, she allegedly became pregnant with David’s child when she was 15 and later gave up the child for adoption. During the second trial, the prosecution reportedly presented the defendant’s phone records and the testimony of other witnesses to the court. On the other hand, the defense maintained that the prosecution lacked direct evidence linking David to the crime and alleged that authorities failed to adequately pursue other suspects. On March 15, 2011, he was found guilty of murder. David was sentenced to 54 years in prison and was fined $10,000. He later appealed his conviction, arguing that the evidence was legally insufficient for his conviction and his constitutional right to confront and cross-examine a witness had been violated during the trial.
On April 30, 2013, the court rejected David’s claims and upheld the judgment. Before Gloria’s murder, he was a suspect in the assault and sexual assaults connected to nine women in Arizona. Later, he was charged with 15 counts of sexual assault, five counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and two counts of sexual abuse. He was also charged with four counts each of kidnapping resulting in death or serious injury and armed robbery with a deadly weapon. On December 8, 2016, David was reportedly extradited to Arizona. Although David pleaded guilty in August 2017, public records provide no information regarding the sentence imposed in that case. Currently, David is incarcerated at the Louis c Powledge Unit in Palestine, Texas. While his parole eligibility date for the murder case is set on August 4, 2036, his projected release date is on August 4, 2063.
