Originally titled ‘Gracias, equipo,’ Netflix’s ‘Go Team!’ is a Spanish-language dark comedy. The film revolves around the corporate side of the cheese brand Uncle Mochales. Following a recent business decision, the company decides it’s time to fire almost half of its workforce. As such, in order to decide which employees to lay off, the company takes them out on an annual team-building retreat, which is really meant to be a competition to weed out the least competent of the crop. This unexpected ambush sends the group of co-workers, including Olga, a CEO aspirant who has only just returned from maternity leave, to engage in a ruthless race to the top. In the process, friendships are ruined, trusts are betrayed, and chaos reigns supreme. Under Diego Nuñez Irigoyen’s direction, the film mixes a grounded foundation with outlandish satirical humor to deliver a story that critiques the contemporary corporate world.
Go Team! is a Critique of the Toxicity of Modern Workplaces
‘Go Team!’ charts a fictitious story, penned by screenwriters Cristóbal Garrido and Adolfo Valor, that has no direct basis in reality. For the most part, the film extracts its sense of realism through a heightened exploration of its subject matter. The story revolves around a team-building retreat that turns into a weekend-long competition where the top brass forces their employees to prove their worth to the company by competing in a series of challenges. Among the employees, different people have different reasons behind their desperation to keep their titles. Regardless, they all end up at the same position: cheating and backstabbing their own friends for a chance to secure their own futures. Even though the premise of the story is outlandish, it highlights a prevalent reality of modern professional lives as experienced by many.

Over the years, corporate cruelty and toxic workplaces have become an overwhelming occurrence in real life. According to a 2026 report by the International Labor Organization, more than 840,000 people die annually on a global scale as a result of risks connected to the workplace. From long working hours and workplace harassment to the relevance of job insecurity, a number of factors impact workers’ cardiovascular and mental health. Similarly, a 2023 survey from the American Psychological Association shows that 19% of workers believe that their workplaces are toxic. Things like institutional-centric cultures, where the company’s advancement and profit are prioritized over the well-being of the employees, contribute significantly to the realities of a toxic workplace.

In ‘Go Team!,’ the narrative explores a similar work environment. Although the CEO of Uncle Mochales claims to have fostered a workplace that is like a second family to the workers, she has no qualms with forcing them into a brutal competition to earn their keep when the company considers a future merger. Moreover, she encourages her employees to be ruthless in their business, directly advocating against a work-life balance. Thus, the depiction of this kind of unhealthy hustle culture-driven mindset within the exaggerated context of a vulturish retreat allows the film to analyze the reality of corporate culture critically. Ultimately, although no real workplace has been used as inspiration for the story, this analysis of corporate life imbues the comedy-centric film with a sense of realism.
Uncle Mochales is a Fictional Cheese Brand
Much like the overall storyline in ‘Go Team!,’ the central company, Uncle Mochales, or Tio Mochales in the original Spanish, remains fictionalized. No similar company exists in real life, rendering the on-screen brand a work of fiction, created specifically for the film. The company is introduced in the story as a failing endeavor that requires the assistance of a bigger fish in order to secure market value and advertise itself to a global audience. However, in order to do this, the brand must undergo a drastic remodeling, in which the genesis of the company will be challenged. More importantly, it will also affect the structural makeup of the establishment, which creates the central conflict of the mass lay-offs.

For the most part, the film only utilizes the Uncle Mochales brand to expand upon the soulless machinery of the corporate world. Even though the brand employs familial imagery and a sense of homely charm to market itself, it turns out to have no real ties to the namesake uncle, Aldo Mochales. Likewise, neither the CEO nor the employees have any real interest in the world of cheese. As such, the company’s role in the story ends up depicting the disconnect between the creative side of a product and the corporate side drudgery that controls a brand’s market presence. Nonetheless, while the Uncle Mochales company contributes to the film’s worldbuilding, it bears no tangible counterparts in reality.
