The fourth season of AMC’s ‘Dark Winds’ begins with the search for a runaway girl, named Billie Tsosie, but takes an entirely unexpected turn by the end. Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn succeeds in bringing the girl back home and defeats an enemy who developed a strange obsession with him to the point that she wanted him and Billie to play house with her in her bunker. With the case wrapped up, Leaphorn now has to face the music and get on with his retirement. But then, a murder case stops him in his tracks, and it is deeply personal because the victim is his friend, Gordo Sena. SPOILERS AHEAD.
Gordo’s Death Sets Up the Central Mystery of Dark Winds Season 5
For the past three seasons, the toll of Joe Leaphorn’s job had started to show heavily on his personal life. So, at the beginning of the fourth season, he announced that he would be retiring for good. However, anyone who knows Joe knows that his heart wasn’t really in it. Part of the reason he wanted to drop the job is that he wanted to get back Emma, whom he’d estranged through his actions. His decision is questioned by everyone, including Emma, who asks him to reflect on whether he is retiring for himself or for something else. Still, for better or for worse, Joe seems to stick by his decision. But then, on the day he is supposed to turn in his uniform and badge and bid farewell to his life as a cop, he receives a call, revealing that Gordo Sena has been murdered.

This is particularly shocking because not only had Joe met him just a day ago, but they were also supposed to go fishing together after Joe’s retirement party. Joe met with him to tell him he’ll not be joining him on the fishing trip, while also sharing the fact that he was having second thoughts about retiring. Gordo understands his feelings and echoes his own as he confesses that, given the opportunity, he wouldn’t have retired when he did. He would have preferred to work his job till the end if he had his way. In fact, he is still so invested in the job that he has been looking into old cases that were never solved. And that might be the key to figuring out why he was killed.
A Martinez Will be a Significant Part of Dark Winds Season 5
While Gordo may have been killed, we will still likely see actor A Martinez reprise the role in the next season, as there are still too many gaps to be filled about what happened to him that night. The actor will most likely appear in flashback sequences as Joe and the others remember the times when he was there for them, or when he said something that may shed light on what happened to him. The fact that he was looking into old cases means that he may have stumbled upon something that put him in harm’s way. Perhaps, Gordo’s search for truth took him too close to solving a case, which someone didn’t want to happen. This is the most likely explanation for his death now, but certainly, more details will come to light as Joe and the team start looking into the matter.

Being such a close friend of Joe, Gordo’s absence will also weigh heavily, especially since Emma has also walked out of his life. Things will get personal for him as he digs into the case and becomes privy to the secrets his friend had been keeping from him. In truth, there is little to nothing that we know about Gordo, even though he has been around for the past couple of seasons. He has mostly been in the background, helping with cases, while also proving to be a deeply loyal friend to Joe. With his murder, the spotlight shifts towards his life and secrets, which means Martinez will still stick around, at least for the next season, to give us a better understanding of who Gordo was and to bring closure to his tragic fate.
