Season 1 of Fox’s ‘Gordon Ramsay’s Secret Service’ features the celebrity chef as he embarks on a journey of transforming restaurant kitchens by first observing them undercover. In episode 5, titled ‘Marvel Ranch,’ he visits the titular restaurant in Reading, Pennsylvania — once famous for its brunch and breakfast menu. In 2024, the once crowded eatery faced a sharp downturn, resulting in a massive loan and a struggle to keep its doors open. It was evident that if the sloppy kitchen crew failed to come together and evolve into a group of professionals soon enough, things would take a turn for the worse.
The Owner’s Weak Leadership Pushed Marvel Ranch to Its Brink
Marvel Ranch is not just a restaurant but a piece of local history. Originally opened in 1959 as a modest breakfast and lunch joint in Reading, Pennsylvania, it quickly became a cherished spot for locals. Over the decades, the restaurant has changed hands several times. It was first launched by Gus Thomas, who passed the reins to Kenneth Shugars a decade later. The latter eventually sold the place in 1979 to one of his employees, Roger Bermel. His daughter Cheryl began working there when she was 13 years old, learning everything from the ground up. By 1991, at just 18 years old, she officially took over the business and has been running it ever since. For four decades, Cheryl has dedicated herself to the restaurant and the people working there.
Cheryl perceives her employees as her family, and they see her as their mother, often referring to her as “Mama.” In the kitchen, there is Kenny, a proud single father and a long-time cook who has worked in and out of the restaurant for the past eight years. Then there is Rachel, who is Cheryl’s daughter-in-law and the server who keeps things running up front. There is Xavier, who is also a cook and is accompanied by the Junior Cook Jameare. The guys constantly bicker and play around in the kitchen, turning it into a chaotic workspace. Kenny admits that the place is not exactly professional, but he stays because of Cheryl, who helped him through one of his hardest chapters.
Similarly, even Rachel cannot ignore the chaos behind the scenes. She notes that the “boys” in the kitchen act more like siblings rather than co-workers. Cheryl can understand that things are spiraling. She has tried talking to the staff by being patient and leading them with nice and kind words. However, the owner has realized that it is of no avail. Above all, she has taken out a massive $1.2 million loan to buy the building on which the restaurant stands. Now, with mortgage payments looming and business dwindling, she is dangerously close to bankruptcy. Cheryl has poured her life into Marvel Ranch, but unless something changes, the place she has fought for may soon become just another memory.
Gordon Ramsay Finds a Lack of Discipline to be Marvel Ranch’s Downfall
The episode kicks off under the night’s cover with Gordon Ramsay sneaking into the storage basement of Marvel Ranch. When he steps inside, he is met with a foul odor and mouse droppings on the floor. He is further shocked to spot a dead mouse at the bottom of the stairs. To dig deeper, he plants a rat camera under the shelves. The chef then inspects the kitchen, only to be surprised that it has not been cleaned in days. He finds a foul smell inside the bread warmer and even mouse and cockroach droppings, highlighting the lack of cleanliness. Under the grill, Gordon uncovers a combination of grease, food, and even droppings. Things get worse when he discovers pre-made omelets. It is a major red flag, considering it only takes 90 seconds to cook a fresh one. The chef conducts an Adenosine Triphosphate test (ATP) by taking swabs from the microwave.
The reading shoots up to 5718, which shocks Gordon because a hygienic kitchen should register no higher than 90. The next morning, he returns undercover in a van parked outside the restaurant. He begins observing the staff from the cameras, which they believe are set up because of a show named ‘Restaurant Refresh.’ The chef finds the staff casually calling Cheryl “Mama,” and the kitchen crew bickering like siblings. Gordon grows concerned about the lack of professionalism, noting that it is not going to be a good impression in front of customers. Cheryl is spotted cooking on the line as the service begins instead of managing the floor. Meanwhile, Gordon sees the microwaved omelet being brought out to the customers. Things escalate when a customer finds hair in their food, and no one takes any accountability.
When another patron sends back the microwaved chili because it is cold in the middle, the cooks loudly complain about it instead of apologizing. These comments are clearly audible to the diners because of the restaurant’s open kitchen design. Gordon next sends in ‘Hell’s Kitchen’ season 22 finalist and renowned private Chef Sammi Tarantino and ‘Hell’s Kitchen’ season 3 winner and restaurant entrepreneur Rock Harper as undercover diners. When their order of chili arrives, Sammi remarks that it tastes like a canned product. Similarly, she observes that the steak she ordered is just brown beef. Rock informs Gordon that the omelet is rubbery and contains canned mushrooms. Meanwhile, an argument between the kitchen staff unravels in the open before the diners. This serves as Gordon’s last straw, and he finally storms in and asks the customers to leave.
Gordon Ramsay Helps Transform Marvel Ranch by Getting Through to the Entire Crew
Gordon gathers the staff around and reveals that he has been watching them and has an insider. He quickly calls out the cooks’ behavior to be less like professionals and more like a “frat party.” When he confronts Cheryl, she informs him that it has been her dream, which she has been fighting for, but the business has changed. However, Gordon points out that her staff doesn’t respect her or her business. He then reveals his findings about the dead mouse he found in the basement and even brings out the filthy grill tray that Kenny states has not been cleaned for over a week. Gordon bluntly states that there is no fight for survival or even to set standards among the staff. Hence, he expresses uncertainty about whether he can help them at all. The chef adds that if the staff is unwilling to change, just transforming the restaurant wouldn’t be enough. Gordon also calls out Kenny’s lack of seriousness regarding the situation.
When Gordon asks Kenny if he has given up, he bluntly replies that the chef is just singling him out. This prompts the former to instruct everyone to leave the restaurant for a one-on-one conversation with the latter. When Kenny confesses that he has been here because he is loyal to Cheryl, Gordon reveals to him the current weight and struggle of the owner. He finally acknowledges the gravity of the situation and expresses his willingness to bring discipline to the kitchen. To give everyone a much-needed reset and clarity, Gordon next takes everyone out for a fun team outing. The chef pulls Cheryl aside as the staff blows off the steam in a fun boxing ring. He gently explains to her that she is not their mother but instead the boss. Gordon further asks her to set boundaries and bring change. Cheryl accepts that she has to take the reins with strong hands.
Furthermore, Cheryl also agrees to let Kenny manage the kitchen while she claims her role as the boss. Back at Marvel Ranch, Gordon’s team has transformed the restaurant into a classic 1970s diner, along with deep-cleaned surfaces and new kitchen equipment. As they return to the eatery, they are awestruck by the changes. Gordon then leads the cooks to the kitchen and teaches them how to make the perfect omelet in just 90 seconds. Cheryl ends up promoting Kenny to the position of head chef. In a final twist, it is revealed that the insider was none other than the owner herself. As the restaurant is relaunched, the chef watches proudly as Cheryl takes command of the floor and Kenny has found his rhythm in the kitchen. Gordon ultimately reminds Cheryl to be the boss that she needs to be and bids her goodbye.
Under Cheryl’s Newfound Strong Leadership, Marvel Ranch Has Restored Its Former Glory
