Several clues and an extensive undercover operation eventually led the law enforcement officials to the killer, Graham Thomas MacDonald. The episode titled ‘Fire & Ice’ of NBC’s ‘Dateline’ reveals how the authorities also found out that Carmela’s husband, David Knight, and his brother, Matthew Knight, AKA Matt, were also responsible for her murder. It also features emotional interviews with her loved ones and the detectives who helped catch the killers.
Tip From a Family Member Pointed Towards Graham MacDonald, David, and Matthew Knight
Graham Thomas MacDonald was born sometime in 1987. Although there isn’t much public information about his early life, it is known that he worked as a Handyman. His name first came up during the investigation after Carmela Knight’s remains were discovered at her home in Pickering, Ontario, on September 15, 2014. The autopsy reports revealed that she had several injuries and a neck compression, which turned the manner of death into a homicide. According to official records, detectives first questioned Carmela’s husband, David Knight, who told them he was at the ice rink with their two sons when the fire broke out. Since his alibi checked out, officials focused on other clues. They reportedly discovered that the door sensors in Carmela’s home were activated when no one was present between 3:30 pm and 5 pm.

As per court records, a breakthrough arrived when David’s sister-in-law, Heather Knight, contacted the detectives. She reportedly told officials that her husband, Matthew Knight, AKA Matt, had gone to meet his friend, Graham, after hearing about the fire at Carmela’s home. Reports state that Heather also informed them that he had abruptly fled to Florida and added that she felt he would never return. According to investigative reports, when officials questioned Graham, he claimed that he went to meet his grandmother on that fateful day. He reportedly continued that, since she was allegedly not at home, he took the GO train from Toronto to Pickering and then walked to a motel. Furthermore, Graham admitted that he had met David on September 15.
When investigators reviewed CCTV footage from the GO train and his grandmother’s apartment, it reportedly didn’t capture Graham, thereby disproving his alibi. According to police reports, investigators soon learned that David and Carmela’s separation wasn’t amicable, as David had initially claimed. Carmela had reportedly found out about David’s affair with a woman named Jill Hartman. Carmela’s sister, Nancy, stated that when Carmela found out, she tried to end the marriage, but David allegedly asked for another chance, insisting he wouldn’t continue his relationship with Jill. Court records specify that Carmela and David had begun going to marriage counseling when she again discovered that David had continued the affair. By the time of her death, Carmela had filed for support and custody for her two sons.
Graham, David, and Matthew Were Arrested After an Undercover Operation
Officials reportedly reached out to Jill, who informed them that David had claimed he had been divorced for 6 years. Official reports state that David planned to move to Florida to start a business and enroll his sons in a school there. When detectives contacted Matt, he refused to return to Ontario and claimed that Heather wasn’t telling the truth, as per police records. Reports indicate that in the meantime, David obtained a passport by falsifying documents, but law enforcement officials ultimately prevented him from fleeing to Florida. Further investigation reportedly revealed that David had been the beneficiary of two life insurance policies on Carmela, totaling approximately $800,000.

Ultimately, investigators decided to conduct an undercover operation to try to obtain a confession from Graham. According to investigative reports, an undercover officer introduced Graham to another undercover official who used the alias Uncle Dan. Reports state that Uncle Dan led Graham to believe he could help him escape the law. Court records indicate that Graham thought he was confessing to a dying cancer patient, who was willing to take the blame for him, but it was actually another undercover officer. Graham reportedly confessed that he waited for Carmela to reach home before he attacked her and tried to stage the scene in a manner that suggested she had died from a drug overdose.
During his confession, Graham revealed that David himself brought the accelerant for the fire from a gas station, which was confirmed from CCTV footage. According to records, he confessed that David had promised him $100,000, which he still hadn’t paid. The undercover officials reportedly convinced him to meet David at a bar to ask for the money. Reports state that David paid Graham around $7,000 during their meeting, and both of them were finally ambushed and arrested at the scene on February 27, 2015. Ultimately, both of them were charged with arson, first-degree murder, and conspiracy to commit murder. Matt was in Florida when the arrest warrant for him was issued in March 2015. He was later deported to Ontario and charged with accessory after the fact to murder and conspiracy to commit murder.

Matt avoided a trial by entering a guilty plea of being an accessory after the fact to murder in April 2017 and was sentenced to one year in prison. The trial of Graham commenced on January 30, 2018, during which the prosecution presented the evidence from their long undercover investigation. It reportedly included his confession and how he staged the crime scene. The prosecution also linked him to David, who offered him a murder-for-hire deal. On the other hand, the defense contested the admission of the evidence obtained by the undercover officers. They claimed the police’s conduct was questionable and that Graham was allegedly denied access to legal counsel during the sting operation. Ultimately, Graham was found guilty of all three charges on February 9, 2018.

Graham was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 25 years. The trial of David began on October 16, 2018, and he was found guilty of all charges on February 16, 2019. By the following month, David received a life imprisonment sentence with the possibility of parole not before 25 years. Graham and David are currently serving their sentence at Correctional Facilities in Ontario. As of writing, David has reportedly been released from prison and appears to be maintaining a low profile.
