At the same, Birdie struggles to keep up with Ford’s antagonistic attitude towards her while Alice learns something significant about her relationship with Doug that could change the dynamics moving forward. SPOILERS AHEAD.
Marilyn’s Bloody Mess and Alice’s Shocking Discovery
Episode 6 opens on the night of the murder as Marilyn caters to a group of guests arriving at the garden club for the event. She struggles to keep up her perfect facade as host, especially after she receives a motion alert on her phone that her husband, Buzz, might be cheating on her in the bedroom. She rushes in and shouts his name as the title card pops up. Five months earlier, Marilyn is arranging breakfast for Buzz as she asks him about some of the favors she wants for her friends. As the mayor of Grosse Pointe, Buzz is reticent about allocating resources to his wife’s posh friends. She is suspicious of her husband’s late-night work schedule, mainly because he frequently stays over with a female colleague named Tara. Elsewhere, Birdie writes out a cheque for Ford’s education to his parents while Brett flexes his new girlfriend in front of his ex, Melissa, in yoga class.
After reigniting her relationship with Doug, Alice decides to continue on her hot streak by accepting a solo dinner invitation from Patty. Doug’s paintings are selling like hotcakes, and their relationship seems to be going as well as we have ever seen. The four main characters meet at the gardening club for their regular session. However, there appears to be some tension between Alice and Brett following their conversation in the previous episode. We learn that they have been cold to each other for at least a month. Meanwhile, Marilyn seems distraught as she clips the flowers in an overly aggressive manner. Five months in the future, we witness Marilyn washing blood off a knife, and from herself, after some massive incident we are not privy to. A man named Pierce Goldman offers Catherine the chance to work as a real estate agent for him during an outing with her kids.
Connor meets with his private investigator to discuss Brett’s movements, something we learned about in the third episode of ‘Grosse Pointe Garden Society.’ He reminds his employee that his duty is to help him and Melissa gain sole custody of Brett’s kids before sending him back to work. Elsewhere, Misty tells Birdie that Ford just aced a test by cheating, which might lead to expulsion. Across town, Alice and Patty have their date, which is momentarily interrupted by Marilyn. After the encounter, the two head out to a different restaurant. During the walk, Alice shockingly learns that the buyer behind Doug’s paintings is Patty. The latter wants to ensure that her son and Alice settle in Grosse Pointe and have kids soon. Alice can’t help but feel disgusted and blackmailed.
Birdie Crafts a Wily Deal to Get Ford Out of Trouble
Alice returns home to find Doug engrossed in another one of his paintings. Although she comes close to telling him the truth about his mother, she decides not to. At Zach’s birthday party, Melissa grows jealous of Brett’s personality change and newfound relationship with Cricket. Connor feels left out by her confession. He tries to get in Zach’s good books by showing his moves on the dance floor. However, it only turns awkward before Brett encourages everyone else to join in. In the meantime, Birdie tracks down Ford and confronts him regarding his false test grades. The boy states that he is trying to find ways to get rid of Birdie from his life because he thinks she is having an affair with his dad. Birdie denies the allegations and tells him that he could have found a lot more ways to try to send her away.
Marilyn spends her lonely time cooking dinner with her cat, Mr. Fingers. In the future timeline, she rushes out of her house and skips into her car before calling Alice. Determined to keep Ford from being kicked out, Birdie shows up at the meeting with the principal. She uses her debate skills to great effect to tie the principal’s words into knots before presenting him with a deal that could benefit both parties. As a result, Ford will keep his spot in the school, while Birdie’s Foundation will sponsor two students in the future. Meanwhile, Catherine decides to take up Pierce’s offer as the man gives her a tour of her new office. Although she is ready to start her new job, an urgent call from her ill daughter forces her to take a rain check on the meeting. At Zach’s party, Melissa tells Connor that they can’t move away and take Zach away from Brett, which frustrates the latter.
Brett and Connor Make a Deal While Marilyn Tells the Truth to Alice
During a lonesome dinner, Marilyn shatters her plate by throwing it down, angry that her husband is acting so distant and cold to her. We skip back to the future timeline again, where we see Marilyn speed down the road and halt behind another car blocking her path. There is a cloth sticking out of its trunk. In the present-day timeline, Catherine and Alice have a conversation about whether having children is a worthwhile exercise. Later, Joel shows up at Birdie’s place to complain about her brash behavior in front of the principal. However, he accepts that she ultimately helped Ford more than he has ever done. The two end up kissing before progressing even further. Surprisingly, Brett has a meeting with Connor in his office, where the latter promises to sponsor his car garage dreams in exchange for a better relationship moving forward.
Patty and her husband discuss the prospect of soon having grandchildren while they are out on a date. Elsewhere, Alice tracks down Marilyn at the garden club to ask her a favor. Although the latter is in a foul mood, she is intrigued by the prospect after hearing that Patty might be somehow involved in the request. Five months in the future, we see Alice arriving at a shop to meet up with Marilyn in the morning. Through the exchange, we learn that Marilyn was involved in a fight against a coyote, which explains the blood on her body earlier. The animal sprung into her house through an open window left by Buzz, something she chastised him for previously. Her cat, Mr. Fingers, was the only casualty in the incident. However, Marilyn managed to get the feline out in time and to a veterinarian.
Although the cat is reported to be fine by a doctor, Marilyn tells Alice that she saw her quilt hanging out of the back of a car last night, referring to the vehicle with a cloth sticking out of the trunk. The latter is alarmed by the statement and tries to dissuade Marilyn from the notion that she saw anything like that. However, Marilyn is very confident about what she saw, promising she will get the quilt back. The complexity of the murder case continues to rise as Alice is stuck in another conundrum.
