‘Grosse Pointe Garden Society’ season 1 ended with our main characters (Alice, Birdie, Catherine, and Brett) dealing with the repercussions of their involvement in Keith’s death, a definitive event that sparks the entire story into motion. The final moments address the larger contextual details behind the crime and how the group must navigate the perils of a blackmail plot in their quest to keep the death a secret. It leads to unfortunate scenarios, especially as fear and paranoia grip everyone. While the blackmailer poses a significant threat, the group’s bigger challenge is their increasing guilt over what transpired, prompting all sorts of moral and ethical dilemmas. Thus, these elements provide a largely satisfying ending, even though some burning questions remain over the fate of certain characters and what might happen in season 2. SPOILERS AHEAD.
Grosse Pointe Garden Society Season 2 Could Reveal Alice’s Choice
One of the significant developments at the end of the inaugural season is Alice’s decision to confess the truth behind the murder to the authorities. She shows up at the police precinct, ready to give up her give up her freedom for the sake of doing the right thing. While sitting in the lobby, she calls Brett to tell him that, contrary to everyone’s expectations, she does have feelings for him. The message serves the role of a parting gift before she decides to give herself up to the cops. However, her plan faces a slight hiccup when Joel overhears her exchange with Deputy Lange, who prepares to take her statement down. Worried that Alice might ruin his perfectly orchestrated plan with Birdie, Joel tries to halt Alice’s efforts by interjecting himself into the conversation. Meanwhile, we watch Alice squirm uncomfortably as the two officers look at her for her confession.
The show cuts away from the action before we get a resolute conclusion about whether Alice confesses. This is likely a deliberate choice to leave the audience on the brink of their seat as the season wraps up. Reading between the lines, there is a 50-50 chance that Alice might be heading one way or another. For one, she could keep her mouth shut and walk away. Or she could confess and turn herself into a sacrificial lamb to save the others. There is no guarantee that either move might work, although the second choice matches the Halloween scene later, where we see Catherine, Birdie, and Brett at a party while there is no sign of Alice. It indicates that she may have taken the fall for the other group members. However, this is merely a conjecture, as the opposite is also possible. As her decision is pivotal for the narrative, it will likely be one of the first matters addressed in season 2.
Grosse Pointe Garden Society Season 2 Might Focus on Kenny’s Next Move
Another character who might surface in season 2 is Kenny, the private investigator who decides to blackmail the group into paying him a hefty fee to keep their murder scandal under wraps. Originally, Kenny was hired by Connor to keep an eye on his wife’s ex-husband, Brett, to collect some dirt on him, which could be used against him during a custody battle for the children. However, after spending many months scrutinizing Brett’s every move, Kenny decides it is in his best interest to find another way of extracting money because he needs finances for his daughter Lexi’s tuition. Thus, when he discovers the group burying Keith in the garden club, he realizes it is his opportunity to make some big bucks by blackmailing a bunch of upper-middle-class folks.
After moving Keith’s body out of the buried site, Kenny puts his plan into motion by cornering Alice, Birdie, Brett, and Catherine, forcing them to heed his demands or else face the consequences of their dark actions being reported to the police. The responsibility for procuring the cash is left with Birdie, who decides to trick Kenny instead. When Kenny catches onto the ruse, he threatens to reveal everything to the world. However, through a stroke of pure luck, Kenny suffers a heart attack, causing him to pass out. While the group debates what to do with him, they ultimately save his life against their better judgment. Later, he wakes up in the hospital room, not knowing that his blackmail targets were the ones who rescued him. Thus, his reaction to the incident will play a huge role in season 2, potentially even making him more sympathetic towards the group.
Grosse Pointe Garden Society Season 2 Will Likely Explain the Halloween Party Scene
At the end of season 1, we are provided a brief glimpse into a scene that is stated to take place in the second season. It mainly revolves around a Halloween Party celebration at the Grosse Pointe Garden Society, where the whole premises has been redecorated to look like a horror movie set. Additionally, a giant signpost at the front of the club states – “Welcome to the Garden Society Spooktacular.” The whole place feels very atmospheric and brimming with eeriness. This creepy factor dials up even more as we shift over to a dark room where Birdie, Brett, and Catherine are questioning someone dressed in a duck-like costume about something heinous they did. Unfortunately, it is hard to discern the exact details behind the scene because of a lack of context. However, it will undoubtedly play some significant role by the look of things in season 2.
A Second Season Could Herald the Return of Some Familiar Faces
According to the teaser scene at the end of season 1, we have confirmation that three of our four main characters are set to return for a second season. They include Melissa Fumero as Birdie Bradley, the town socialite whose estranged relationship with her son has been her defining storyline, Aja Naomi King as Catherine, a married woman trying to keep her family together in the wake of constant scandals, and Ben Rappaport as Brett, a single father with a complex relationship with his ex-wife. The only omission from the main cast is AnnaSophia Robb as Alice Morris. While her character might be in a heap of trouble in the final moments of the inaugural season, it is highly probable she will rejoin the rest of her cast members when the second season rolls into motion.
Another key player in the drama could be Alexander Hodge as Alice’s husband, Doug, who finds himself trying to navigate the broken pieces of a faltering marriage. Nancy Travis, who plays Patty, Alice’s overbearing mother-in-law, could also have a strong return in season 2, especially now that she knows her husband Keith has gone missing. It will be intriguing to see if she manages to figure out the truth and how it might affect her already turbulent bond with Alice moving forward. Additionally, more drama could be on the horizon with the potential return of Matthew Davis’s Joel and Felix Wolfe’s Ford, two characters who have a significant hand in Birdie’s storylines. Meanwhile, Brett’s ex-wife, Melissa, could also see Nora Zehetner reprise her part for a second installation.
