Gypsy-Rose Blanchard: What’s Her Life After Lock Up?

Lifetime’s ‘Gypsy Rose: Life After Lock Up’ is a documentary series that follows the life and experiences of former convict Gypsy-Rose Blanchard who was locked up for having a hand in the killing of her mother. Despite her crime, she became a sensation around the world due to her unfair experiences growing up. After her early release from prison, she rejoined society as a free woman and caught up with her family and friends for the first time in many years.

Gypsy-Rose Blanchard Was Imprisoned For Being Involved in Her Mother’s Murder

Born to Clauddine (also known as “Dee Dee”) and Rod Blanchard on July 27, 1991, in Golden Meadow, Louisiana, Gypsy-Rose Alcida Blanchard (née Anderson) was told that she had different kinds of health issues by her mother. Not only was she told that she had sleep apnea and muscular dystrophy, but she was also forced to use a wheelchair after having a minor motorcycle accident in the late 1990s. Gypsy’s mother also kept her head shaven most of the time, telling her that the medication would cause hair fall anyway. However, as she grew up, her dependency on her mother lessened, and she started connecting the dots about Dee Dee’s lies.

Devoid of interaction with others, Gypsy got involved in an online relationship with Nicholas “Nick” Godejohn and planned the murder of Dee Dee with him. Ultimately, on June 10, 2015, the couple executed their plan as she allegedly let Nick in and facilitated the killing of her mother while she hid in the bathroom. After the police discovered Dee Dee’s body, they launched a search for the suspected couple, who were found in Wisconsin. Gypsy and Nick were arrested for the felony murder. Having pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, Gypsy was sentenced to a decade in prison. In her defense, she claimed that Dee Dee subjected her to several years of physical and mental abuse by feeding her medications that were not necessary.

Gypsy-Rose Blanchard Separated From Her Husband and Rekindled With an Old Flame

While Gypsy-Rose Blanchard was serving her sentence, she was part of a pen pal program through which she met Ken Urker. After exchanging various letters with him, they formed a romantic connection and got engaged. However, the relationship didn’t last long. Not long after their break up, in 2022, she tied the knot with a teacher named Ryan Anderson inside the prison without any of their loved ones present. After serving eight years of her sentence, on December 28, 2023, she was finally released on parole from the Chillicothe Correctional Center in Missouri and picked up by her husband.

Within the next couple of weeks, she co-authored a book titled ‘Released: Conversations on The Eve of Freedom,’ which served as a medium for the whole world to know her truth. Upon her release, she received heavy media attention, as she was featured on ‘Good Morning America’ and CNN in January 2024 before making an appearance on ‘The View’ and ‘The Dr. Phil Podcast.’ A couple of months later, she and Ryan parted ways, which she confirmed on March 28. Having been on amicable terms with her former fiancé, Ken Urker, she reconnected with him, and they got into a relationship the following month.

The month of July 2024 was highly eventful for Gypsy as she not only got to meet and talk with Kim Kardashian but also announced that she was pregnant with Ken’s child, due around December 2024 or January 2025. Having spent almost a decade behind bars, she has been involved in the fight for prison reform, which was also one of the subjects during her conversation with Kim. After their meeting, Gypsy shared, “It’s time to push for meaningful change in our justice system, and I’m so proud to become a part of the movement.” In October, she and Ken talked about their relationship, their future, and their baby on the award-winning podcast, ‘The Viall Files.’

A month prior to her delivery date, in November, the couple held a baby shower in order to celebrate their “little miracle on the way.” On December 9, the divorce between Gypsy and Ryan Anderson was finalized. The following day, her memoir titled ‘My Time to Stand’ was published. The year ended on a high for her as she welcomed her daughter into the world on December 28.
