Chef Hasung Lee, AKA Culinary Monster, was introduced to the viewers in season 2 of Netflix’s ‘Culinary Wars.’ He was among 80 initial Black Spoon chefs who hoped to take their desired position in the competition. Right from the first elimination round of those 80 contestants, he made it clear that he was not an ordinary contender. He stunned the judges with his creation, showcasing technical finesse and an innovative approach. Out of the 80 Black Spoon chefs, he emerged as one of the 19 who survived. His calm demeanor under pressure helped him make gradual progress in the competition. All of those qualities were also noticed by the experienced White Spoon chefs, who acknowledged that Hasung truly posed a challenge.
Hasung Lee’s Consistent Innovative Approach Helped Him Become a Finalist
Hasung Lee, AKA Culinary Monster, had his first major test during the cook-off against the White Spoon Chefs, where he was paired against Chef Song Hoon Park. Despite the latter’s years of experience, he acknowledged that his opponent was no ordinary challenger. That intuition proved to be correct as Hasung ultimately won the round with confidence and precision, sending Song Hoon home. The momentum continued as he faced the White Spoon Chefs in the All or Nothing challenge, where he demonstrated his consistency and expertise. His fellow Black Spoon Chefs even recognized his skills and selected him as one of the three ace chefs in Round 3. Although Hasung’s team lost the challenge by a single vote, forcing them into a consolation match, he once again rose to the occasion.

Out of all the Black Spoon Chefs who fought to stay in the competition, only Hasung and Brewmaster Yun survived and moved forward in the contest. By the following challenge, he teamed up with White Spoon Chef Son Jong-won. Although his team managed to enter the survival zone, he had to face off against his own teammate. Even then, Hasung defeated Jong-won and moved on to the Semifinals. Unfortunately, despite presenting three dishes, the former failed to secure the highest score, pushing him into a death match. There, Hasung defeated five opponents to become the second Finalist of the season. Despite trying his best in the Finale, his final dish didn’t shine as brightly as his opponent Choi Kang-rok’s. It eventually led to the elimination of Hasung, although his journey remained unforgettable.
Hasung Lee is Channeling his Vision Into Building a Restaurant of His Own
Long before Hasung Lee became widely known as the Culinary Monster, his journey was shaped by perseverance and sacrifice. He took the first step into the culinary world by enrolling in a university in South Korea to study Culinary Arts. Following that, he went on to study at The Culinary Institute of America in 2012, before graduating in 2014. During his time at the university, he gave it his best but faced multiple obstacles. Hasung trained at several hotels across the country. Shortly after, he faced a financial crisis, which led him to return to Korea and use his saved-up funds to run a food truck with his friends. It helped him gain firsthand experience in entrepreneurship.
Ultimately, in July 2014, Hasung joined Gramercy Tavern as a Cook, where he stayed until September 2015. He then transitioned to his role as Chef de Partie at the three-Michelin-starred restaurant Geranium in October 2016, where he served until September 2017. He proceeded to work at the two-Michelin-star holding eatery, Atomix, as Chef de Cuisine from March 2018 to October 2021. Hasung then became the Sous Chef at the legendary restaurant, The French Laundry, remaining there until October 2023. In September 2025, he also collaborated with the restaurant in Seoul, representing his growing presence as a culinary creator.
As of writing, Hasung is once again ready to embark on his entrepreneurial journey by becoming the owner and chef of a restaurant. With that goal in sight, he is preparing to open his restaurant, Oyatte, in New York, which is set to open in the coming spring. Since January 2026, he has begun hiring a small but carefully selected team, filling positions such as Service Manager and Line Cook, among others. Beyond the kitchen, Hasung has cultivated a strong following on Instagram, where more than 28.1K followers get glimpses into his professional and personal life.
Hasung Balances His Love For His Mother With a Spirit of Exploration
Despite being occasionally active on Instagram, Hasung Lee has consistently chosen to keep his personal life largely out of the spotlight. Yet, through the moments that he shares, it becomes pretty clear that he shares a meaningful bond with his mother. On occasion, he even invites her into his kitchen, a powerful gesture that reflects his deep respect for his mother. Hasung also fosters a sense of appreciation that extends to the people he works alongside every day. He is known for expressing gratitude to his team of chefs for their efforts. Outside of his busy life, he finds balance through traveling.
Hasung’s journeys have often taken him across continents, offering inspiration for his palate. In 2016, he experienced the breathtaking beauty of Argentina’s Perito Moreno Glacier. It was followed by his journey through Bolivia during the same year, during which he immersed himself in the landscapes and cultures of South America. Hasung had also made his way to Brazil, where he explored the iconic monuments and the vibrant culture. His travels, much like his cooking, reflect a curiosity for the world that gradually enriches his perspective.
