Prime Video’s multistarrer comedy film ‘Heads of State’ presents a riveting tale jam-packed with high-stakes action sequences, international threats, and a compelling buddy-cop dynamic. US President Will Derringer and UK Prime Minister Sam Clarke start off as rivals who can’t stand the other’s startlingly opposite personality. Nonetheless, after they’re hurled into one life-or-death situation after another with little else but each other to rely on, their bond inevitably strengthens, forging a lifelong friendship. Better yet, with the help of MI6 Agent Noel Bisset, the two world leaders manage to bring down their common adversary, Viktor Gradov, the Russian arms dealer.
Therefore, with no great loose ends left to tie up, Sam and Will’s adventures beyond the film paint an intriguing picture. This remains especially true in light of director Ilya Naishuller’s comments about his apparent interest in picking the story back up for a possible sequel. As such, the chances of an expansion through another installment seem to be promising. Should Amazon greenlight such a project, we can expect another blockbuster to arrive sometime in 2027.
Heads of State 2 Might Expand on Noel’s International Agent Network
At the end of ‘Heads of State,’ the titular protagonists, Sam Clarke and Will Derringer, find themselves in a fairly stable place in their lives. Now that they have foiled Gradov and Vice President Kirk’s plot of political assassination and mayhem, the two can finally return to their normal lives. Or, at least, what passes for normal in their lives as the leaders of two of the most prominent global powers. However, while they seem to have settled into a regular life, the third in their duo-turned-trio, Noel Bisset, is still all about the thrill of her life as an MI6 agent. Therefore, a mid-credit scene reveals that the agent is in some new location, crossing paths with Marty Comer, an old friend of the President and Prime Minister.
Marty plays a short but prominent role in the story as the CIA Officer in charge of the USA’s international safe house, where Sam and Will inevitably end up after surviving the disastrous plane crash. As their enemies track them down to the location, the CIA Agent does the bulk of the defensive heavy lifting before eventually getting bested. However, as it turns out, a twist of fate led Marty to survive the executioner’s bullet to the head. Consequently, as the first film hints at a potential partnership between him and Noel, it opens up a whole new world for the possible future installment. In fact, even director Ilya Naishuller has expressed his interest in exploring the character further in a potential sequel. Thus, it’s highly likely that Noel’s climactic meeting with the CIA Agent will inevitably play a significant part in the story’s continuation.
Sam and Will’s Involvement in Heads of State 2 Might Remain Minimal
While Sam and Will occupy the most significant roles in ‘Heads of State,’ their future in the franchise remains relatively precarious. With Gradov’s threat gone and buried, there’s no outright conflict surrounding the characters. As the respective UK Prime Minister and US President, their lives will undoubtedly continue to bring complications. Nonetheless, the chances of another villain specifically targeting them as a political ploy seem to be low. For the same reason, it’s possible that a sequel won’t focus entirely on these characters and their dynamics.
Still, that doesn’t mean Sam and Will can’t continue to remain foundational parts of the franchise. If Noel and Marty indeed continue to helm the narrative in a future continuation, both world leaders will inevitably end up back in their orbit. This might be particularly true for Sam, who is in a will-they-won’t-they situationship with the MI6 Agent. Similarly, Marty’s idol-worshipping of Sam keeps certain avenues open about the latter’s involvement in upcoming misadventures. Therefore, even though the central duo’s future is fairly ambiguous, there’s always a chance for them to return as the entertaining franchise hopefully expands into a cinematic universe.
Fans May See a Change in the Lead in Heads of State 2
As previously mentioned, Ilya Naishuller is interested in the prospect of Marty Comer’s increased involvement in the franchise. Reportedly, in a conversation with Screen Rant, the director said, “If (people) watch the movie and enjoy it, and Amazon feels like it makes sense to do a second one, absolutely. I’d love to get more of Jack (Quaid) in there (and) more of Marty.” Thus, if everything plays out right, we can expect Quaid to reprise his role as the lovable, eager CIA Agent, who will take on the reins as a protagonist in the sequel. As a result, it’s also probable that with the shifted focus, the franchise may also recruit new faces to populate the world around Marty’s character.
Consequently, a potential sequel may find an entirely new cast with only some recognizable characters. It’s likely that Priyanka Chopra Jonas’ Noel Bisset will be one of these characters. If this happens, then these two central characters may replace Idris Alba and John Cena’s Sam and Will as the unlikely partners whose conflicting personalities carry the narrative forward. On the other hand, since the central antagonists, Gradov (Paddy Considine) and Kirk (Carla Gugino), both meet a bitter end in ‘Heads of State,’ a continuation is bound to see the rise of new villains to face off against our heroes.
