Later in the narrative, a tragedy unfolds between the three characters, leading to drastic changes in the team’s composition. Eventually, Davenport has to step in and take the baton from his previous captains and lead the team into their final race. Although he suffers from a lack of motivation for rowing, he begins to realize the team’s importance and strive for something bigger than himself. Murphy’s teachings help him realize that no matter what, he must learn to rely on others and fight for them just as they do for him. It goes back to Murphy’s words from earlier in the movie – “No man is an island.” The three characters play pivotal roles throughout the narrative, directing the team’s flow in various directions.
