‘Hellcat’ follows the trials and tribulations of Lena Orchard, a young woman in her 20s, who suddenly wakes up in a trailer on the highway at night, driven by a seemingly dangerous man named Clive. Despite his claiming that he is trying to help her and save her from a terrible fate, Lena is positive that he means her harm. At the same time, she also realizes that one of her arms is deeply wounded, and strange vine-like black lines, originating from the wound, are taking over her body.
Desperate to escape, the young woman uses every resource at her disposal to find help but fails. Clive’s fascination with supernatural elements and strange myths adds a layer of mystery to Lena’s already complex journey. While the young woman and the driver continue to shape each other’s destinies, something beyond either of their control takes shape, threatening to turn their lives upside down. With their fates now uncertain, both Lena and Clive face difficult decisions that could be the difference between life and death. SPOILERS AHEAD.
Hellcat Plot Synopsis
A young woman named Lena wakes up in a moving camper trailer that is hitched to a hauling car driven by an unknown man. The driver reveals that his name is Clive and communicates with Lena through a speaker hidden behind a wolf’s head figurine. The young woman assumes that she has been kidnapped and panics, looking for ways to escape. Despite her attempts, she is not able to do so. Clive tries to assure her that he is driving her to the hospital since she only has an hour left before her condition deteriorates. Lena sees that she has been severely injured in her arm, which is bandaged. The wound grows, spreading like dark vines through her arm, even reaching the edge of her neck.
The driver tells her that he picked her up from a campsite, that she has been infected with something dangerous, and that she will need immediate medical attention. Lena also sees another cabin in the trailer, which is firmly locked. She is shocked to see another girl chained up within the cabin, desperate to get out. Lena uses a knife to carve the words “Help Me” into the window, catching the attention of another car. The people from the other car force Clive to stop the trailer. Soon, Lena hears two gunshots and assumes that her kidnapper killed the intruders. Clive reveals that he still misses his dead wife, Rebecca, who passed away five years ago. He also says that he is now estranged from his daughter, Ollie. The driver also says he regularly listens to a radio show that focuses on supernatural phenomena, myths, and other topics.
The virus from the wound keeps spreading, causing immense pain to Lena, who discloses to Clive that she is two months pregnant. Lena finds the keys to the other cabin and then frees the helpless girl. Learning this, Clive stops the vehicle, drags the other girl away, and leaves Lena alone in the trailer. Though Lena assumes that Clive shot the girl to death, the truth turns out to be far from it. It is revealed that the other girl is actually Ollie, whom Clive kept in chains for a very specific and unknown reason, and to keep her safe. Later, Clive comforts Ollie, who sits on the passenger seat next to him as he continues driving. Lena misses her mother, who passed away a long time back, and is emotionally distant from her father.
Clive then calls the radio show he regularly listens to and says that he is transporting a werewolf in his trailer. Though Lena has not transformed into a werewolf, Clive informs her that he saw another werewolf bite her, which is why he picked her up and tried to help her. The host and the listeners of the radio show get excited when they learn that there is someone with access to a real werewolf. Later, when the cloth covering the trailer’s air vent blows away, Lena spots the full moon and experiences strange sensations.
Clive and Ollie both worry about Lena and what would happen to her if she indeed transforms fully into a werewolf. Lena’s behavior turns more aggressive when she bites Clive while he tries to help her. He pleads with her to remain calm, but she believes that she will not transform. After realizing that he can no longer control Lena’s destiny and that she should make her own choices, Clive stops the vehicle, hands Lena her phone, and lets her leave the trailer.
Hellcat Ending: Does Lena Become a Werewolf? Who Bit Her?
Lena’s journey takes an unexpected turn when Clive lets her leave the trailer after apologizing to her. The young woman calls her father to inform him that she’s safe, but is soon distracted by an approaching police vehicle. After Clive leaves, Lena hops into the cop car driven by Officer Crump, who promises to take her to the hospital. However, Crump starts communicating with the same radio channel that Clive was in contact with. The cop boasts that he now has a werewolf in his car, pointing at Lena, who is taken aback. The young woman realizes that the officer isn’t going to help her and that the officer has marked her as a target to be eliminated. Crump is convinced that Lena is soon going to turn into a werewolf, unless he can kill her before it’s too late.
Hearing the cop’s radio communication, Clive and Ollie learn of Lena’s predicament and turn their vehicle around to chase the cop car. Despite her best efforts, Lena isn’t able to escape from the police vehicle. Clive and Ollie catch up to Crump and Lena, forcing the cop to stop the car. Crump holds the father and daughter at gunpoint, telling them that Lena is pregnant. Lena uses a silver bullet to break open the window of the police vehicle, distracting Crump. Clive attacks the cop, hoping to take the gun away, but gets shot in the ensuing struggle. Lena runs away from the scene as a horrified Ollie attempts to comfort her injured father. With the full moon above, Lena undergoes immense pain, indicating that she might soon transform into a werewolf.
Crump catches up to her by the lake and gets ready to shoot her to death. The injured Clive asks his daughter to hand him a rifle and then shoots the cop twice from a long distance, killing him instantly, before the officer harms Lena. One of the most intense moments in Lena’s journey unfolds as Clive runs towards her. He sits next to her and then reveals that his daughter, Ollie, is a werewolf and was the one who bit her. Lena is shocked to learn that Clive had locked up his own daughter to prevent her from hurting herself and others. Clive reveals that he has been locking Ollie up for a long time, whenever the full moon is close. The father deeply loves his daughter, despite how dangerous she can be.
Though she is just in her second month of pregnancy, Lena experiences sharp labor pains, prompting her to remove her undergarments to deliver the child. Clive looks on as the young woman gives birth to a girl with the face and arms of a wolf, the rest of her body human. Although the full moon is right above her line of sight, Lena doesn’t transform because her newborn absorbs every bit of the werewolf virus herself. Because the baby has both wolf and human features, it can be presumed that the virus just treated Lena as a medium to reach the infant. The next morning, Lena recovers from her injuries, and her skin appears normal, without the dark lines. She is now human again, but still loves her wolf-human daughter dearly.
Is Lena’s Daughter a Wolf or Human? Why Does Ollie Help Lena?
Lena’s daughter is born with both human and wolf features, which is a result of the werewolf virus. Whether she undergoes any further changes is not answered by the story. However, there are clues to predict how the baby’s future might unfold. While werewolves are essentially human beings who turn during a full moon, Lena’s daughter is not purely human or wolf. Since she has the characteristics of two species within her, it is likely that she will grow into an adult wolf-human and may live isolated from the rest of society. Although Lena loves her newborn, it will presumably be difficult to provide her daughter a normal life, given the strangeness of the situation. Although Lena has seen her own mother die and her father displaying emotional distance, she still preserves the capacity to love and show empathy.
While the wolf-human baby will not lead a so-called normal life, she will always have her mother to care for her. Ollie shows up and offers to help Lena and the newborn. Being a werewolf, Ollie realizes that the infant will need all the help she can get. Though hesitant for a moment, Lena ultimately gets into the vehicle, trusting Ollie. Both Lena and Ollie will presumably play a role in the child’s future, as the two share a special, spiritual connection with the newborn. Since Ollie is the one who bit Lena, the former’s essence is within the child. While Lena is the child’s mother, Ollie is responsible for the baby’s unique physical features. Thus, the infant will have both a werewolf and a human to take care of her as she adjusts to the complexities of the world.
Is Clive Dead or Alive? Will Others Pursue Lena and the Child?
After shooting Crump and saving Lena, Clive witnesses the birth of the baby. The next morning, Clive sits by the lake, seemingly lifeless. Ollie drives Lena and the newborn away from the scene, leaving Clive behind. It is strongly hinted that Clive succumbed to his gunshot wounds. Earlier, Crump shoots Clive at close range, inflicting maximum damage. Although he is injured, Clive still manages to help Lena. Given the impact of the injury, it is most likely that Clive died before sunrise, having accomplished his mission of saving both Lena and Ollie from harm. Despite seeming violent to Lena at the beginning of the journey, he feels a deep sense of loss after the death of his wife, Rebecca. Clive’s entire life is driven by guilt, since he wasn’t able to save his wife.
This guilt makes him feel responsible for his daughter’s safety, the same paternal empathy he extends to Lena. His death, though tragic, is also heroic and meaningful. With Crump dead, there is no immediate threat to Lena and her daughter. However, since others have heard the radio show, some may still be interested in what happened to Lena. Though her identity and name are not known to the listeners of the radio show, their obsession with the supernatural elements of the world will presumably prompt them to dig deeper into the issue, which might expose Lena, her daughter, and Ollie’s whereabouts in the future.
