Hello Bachhon: True Story of Alakh Pandey, Explained

Netflix’s ‘Hello Bachhon’ is the story of Alakh Pandey, a physics teacher with the dream of making education accessible to every student in India. He uses his online platform, “Physics Wallah,” to train students for competitive exams across the country at an affordable price, helping them realize their dreams. However, he faces unexpected challenges that force him to come to terms with the weight of his own goals. Along with Alakh’s story, the Hindi-language drama series also focuses on the struggles of young students from across the country with great ambitions. They face familial, financial, social, and other challenges as they hope to build a future as doctors and engineers in a world built on competition and survival. Created by Abhishek Yadav, the Indian show chronicles social realities, class differences, and the moral issues surrounding the Indian education system.

Hello Bachhon is Based on the Fascinating Life Experience of Alakh Pandey

The grounded narrative of ‘Hello Bachhon’ is written by Abhishek Yadav, Vernaali, Ankit Yadav, and Sandeep Singh Rawat. The show is based on the trials and tribulations of the real-life Alakh Pandey, one of the most important figures in Indian education. Born on October 2, 1991, in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, Alakh Pandey’s early life was marked by financial hardship. His family had to sell their house during his school days at Bishop Johnson School. During his 9th grade, Alakh began tutoring younger students to help his family financially. Later, he dropped out of his Mechanical Engineering course at Harcourt Butler Technical Institute. Alakh subsequently started teaching in coaching institutes in Prayagraj.

Alakh’s life changed when he launched the “Physics Wallah” YouTube channel in 2016, using limited resources to simplify complex physics concepts and make them accessible to all students. Alakh’s friendly teaching style quickly connected with students, and the YouTube channel attracted millions of subscribers as a resource for physics and other sciences. The Physics Wallah app, launched by Alakh Pandey in 2018, rapidly gained over 35,000 users. The 2020 pandemic dramatically boosted online learning, and that same year, Alakh and co-founder Prateek Maheshwari established Physics Wallah. By August 2022, Physics Wallah achieved unicorn status, valued at $1.1 billion. A $210 million funding round in September 2024 increased its valuation to $2.8 billion.

Physics Wallah has more than 31 million subscribers across 61 channels and 180 offline centers in 105 cities. Alakh Pandey was part of the Hurun List of top young entrepreneurs under 35 in 2024. He also received the Best Digital Person of the Year: Growth Catalyst at the 15th India Digital Awards in 2024. With an estimated net worth of nearly $240 million, Alakh’s core mission remains to make quality education accessible to all Indian students. The Netflix show dramatizes important moments from Alakh’s real life and presents a poignant story of dreams and hope.

Perspectives From the Cast and Crew of Hello Bachhon Shed Light on the Show’s Authenticity

‘Hello Bachhon’ bears a gritty narration style, grounded characters, and layered emotions. While based on true events, it doesn’t glorify or distort reality; rather, it portrays it with sincerity. The show’s authenticity also makes its social messages more effective. Speaking at the trailer launch of the show, Vineet Kumar Singh, who portrays Alakh Pandey in the series, said, “As an actor, portraying someone who has impacted millions comes with great responsibility, but also deep gratitude. I approached the role with utmost respect and gave it everything I had. I hope audiences feel the warmth, struggle and hope that define this journey, and see a reflection of countless journeys from across our country.” Reportedly, the actor also met the real-life Alakh Pandey and spoke with him extensively to prepare for the role.

In an interview with Bollywood Hungama, Arunabh Kumar, the founder and CEO of The Viral Fever, the company that produced the show, opined that the narrative delves into diverse stories. He said, “I think the backgrounds of students whose story we have dealt with in Hello Bachhon is going to completely surprise and astound people that, okay, there are such people too.”  The CEO added, “But I think this time you will see that we have got a chance, thanks to Alakh’s journey, thanks to PW’s journey, we got a chance to dip into the stories of these students from such diverse, such, sometimes, strikingly underprivileged background, sometimes such part of victim of such, I will say, societal norms that, and then they have been able to come out. And these stories are based on actual anecdotes of people who have learned from PW and Alakh.”

The show represents the deeply human side of Alakh and doesn’t shy away from showing his vulnerable moments. It captures reality intricately and treats the stories of the students with respect and sensitivity. The cinematic narration style adds to the experience of the audience, but doesn’t attempt to sensationalize the tales of the students. The core of the show is in its portrayal of the quieter moments between the characters. It humanizes the teachers and students, while also commenting on the larger reality of Indian education. ‘Hello Bachhon’ is a deeply relevant and socially aware show that captures the spirit of a real-life story of triumph.
