Her Fatal Fling is a Fictional Story of Cult Influence and the Pursuit of Freedom

‘Her Fatal Fling’ is an original film written by Michael DeVorzon and Priya Lorenz as their TV movie writing debut. Despite its fictional nature, ‘Her Fatal Fling’ seems to draw elements from the real world as well-documented stories of women escaping a cult upbringing have come to light over the years. In real-life instances of cult members escaping the confines of their manipulative organizations, they often become the cult’s biggest critics, providing insights into its corruption. However, much like Eve, they, too, generally seek to leave their associations with the organization behind in favor of living a fulfilling life away from coercion and judgment. Such is the true story of Bexy Cameron, a writer and director who grew up in the Children of God cult and managed to escape at the age of 15.

Similarities with the True Story of Bexy Cameron

Bexy Cameron’s parents joined the Children of God cult in the early 1970s, and she and her eleven siblings were born into its commune in Bromley, England. According to Cameron, by the time she was born, the cult’s philosophy had become corrupted from its original message of love and peace, instead creating toxic and violent environments for its members. As children, she and her siblings were not sent to school; instead, they were put to work as manual laborers, cooking and cleaning for the organization. The cult’s logic behind this was that the end times were nigh and that none of the children would reach adulthood. Thus, they didn’t need to learn anything but the word of God, which would save them.

When the girls entered their teenage, another dimension of their abuse began. The female members of the cult were utilized for sex work in order to make money for the organization. They suffered further physical and mental abuse at the End Time teen camps, enduring the horrors of beatings, malnutrition, and isolation. Bexy Cameron’s mildest exposure to the outside world gave her a sense of how much better things could be when a journalist visited them and talked to them like they were people. At the age of 14, she began sneaking out of the commune in their village outside of Leicester, going to a local pub and meeting teenagers. An 18-year-old boy helped her plan her escape, and she got a part-time job to start saving up money. However, the commune discovered her plan, and she was excommunicated.

Despite being penniless and alone as an uneducated, underage girl, Bexy Cameron made up her mind never to go back. She hid her cult past as Eve did in the film and worked three jobs to sustain herself. If nothing else, the cult had prepared her to work hard, and she eventually carved out a space for herself in society through sheer will and determination. The inspiring tale of Bexy Cameron has a number of similarities with ‘Her Fatal Fling,’ from violence and abuse in her dark past to the cult background that the young woman hides at all costs in order to forge a new life for herself. However, the storyline of Eve’s downward spiral owing to her past has no similarities to the real story. While there are a number of parallels to be drawn with true cult events, ‘Fatal Fling’ is a fictional story that is not directly related to any true events.
