High Potential Season 2 Episode 4 Recap: Who Killed Raina Viera?

The second season of ABC’s ‘High Potential’ delves deeper into the intriguing life of Morgan Gillory as she tries to face new challenges working as a civilian consultant for the LAPD. With the Game Maker safely behind bars, she gets to focus on her family, which also includes her long-lost former husband, Roman. The previous episode ended with the apprehension of Christopher Bishop, the paramedic involved in the attack on Nathan Gould. It is revealed that the paramedic executed the whole plan in order to help his mother, Rosemary, get a heart transplant.

Ava confronts her mother about Roman’s whereabouts, leading to Morgan telling her he might still be around. The protagonist returns Nathan’s ring to his daughter Jessica, who talks about reuniting with her father despite all the hurdles. This makes Morgan emotional, perhaps hinting at her future approach towards Roman if he shows up. These events lead to ‘Behind the Music,’ the fourth episode of the season. SPOILERS AHEAD.

The Strange Case of Raina Viera

A woman calls the police about a murderer and asks for their help, during which someone presumably dangerous forcibly enters her house. Morgan arrives at the station and talks about how her civilian consultant ID is practically useless for influence. The audio from the aforementioned woman’s call is played for Morgan and Karadec. The two go to the house of Raina Viera, who denies calling the cops. Morgan recognizes Raina’s accent and deduces that she was the one who called, but her call records don’t prove it. Karadec spots no sign of foul play and tells Morgan not to worry. Soto is revealed to be in the running for captain, which also guarantees Karadec the position of lieutenant if Soto were to succeed. This worries Morgan about her future as a civilian consultant.

Karadec gets a call, after which he, Morgan, and Oz go to Raina’s house again, finding her dead. They speculate that the victim may have been pushed down the stairs or fallen by herself. The cops also take an interest in a person named Lucy, who had given Raina three missed calls. They go to the house of a neighbor named Logan, who had a party the night before. As the cops begin to question him, Morgan deduces that he is a drug dealer, following which he tries to run, but is eventually arrested. At the station, he claims that he was just trying to help Raina, who depended on him for migraine medicines. Karadec and Morgan go to Raina’s basement after Logan tells them that she was probably in the basement when she made the call.

The Story of the Talented Singer

Fingerprint evidence points to Logan’s presence in the house during the call. The two find an old cellphone in the basement, and also evidence that points towards the victim having early-onset dementia. Karadec spots a bloodstained dress, which could likely be a trigger that caused Raina to believe that she saw a murder. The theory is that she probably witnessed a murder, but just not in the present. Morgan examines the bloodstained dress, and Daphne finds out that it was manufactured by Cibrian Creations, which went out of business in 2015. The cops use the dress as a clue and narrow down to the case of a young African-American woman and aspiring singer named Greta St. John, who was murdered in 2000.

Oz and Daphne go to talk to Eddie Friedman, who used to manage the Black Jewel Club, near which Greta was found dead. Meanwhile, Morgan and Karadec speak to Lucy, who tells them that Raina and Greta were rivals back in the day. Eddie tells Oz and Daphne that Greta was a great singer and plays them an audio sample from the past. A guy named Mac Epps is revealed to be the current owner of the Black Jewel, who used to be Greta’s manager but started working for Raina. Lucy and Eddie both confirm that Mac is a dangerous man who turned Raina’s life upside down. Morgan calls Arthur, but gets no response. Soto announces that she did not get the position of captain. CCTV footage shows Mac and Raina arguing days before the latter’s death.

Karadec Makes a Dangerous Choice

On the way to the Black Jewel, Karadec talks to Morgan about the fact that she’s worried about something. At the club, Karadec questions Mac Epps about the two deaths, and the latter denies having anything to do with them. Morgan spots a star-shaped tattoo on Mac’s hand and concludes that he and Greta were romantically involved. Through photographs, Morgan deduces that Greta gave birth to Mac’s child and that she was probably trying to save her baby from a violent father. She further deduces that Mac killed Greta, and Raina witnessed the act, during which she got a bloodstain on her dress in the past. Karadec tells Morgan not to come for the arrest. He heads back to Black Jewel, where Mac refuses to be arrested and holds a woman hostage.

Karadec fires a shot to save the woman, killing Mac in the process. Later, the cop is investigated by a member of the Internal Affairs of the LAPD, who forgives him for firing the bullet. Morgan and Karadec check Mac’s car to see if he also killed Raina. They also talk about his mental state after killing a man. Karadec says that he did the right thing by killing Mac. They find a prison visit pass in Mac’s car, which gives him an alibi for Raina’s murder. The cops conclude that Raina was probably killed by someone else. Karadec and Morgan visit Lucy’s house, who is deduced to be the murderer and Greta’s daughter. Lucy reveals that Raina’s dementia inadvertently led to her giving clues about her role in staying silent on Greta’s death.

Lucy reveals that she accidentally pushed Raina while questioning her about her mother’s death. She promises that she didn’t mean to kill the old woman and only wanted justice for her mother. Karadec arrests Lucy for her crime and provides justice to Raina. Morgan and Karadec have a heartwarming conversation about their individual natures, and the civilian consultant asks him to take a look at Arthur’s mysterious connection to Roman. Morgan tells Soto to be strong and to challenge the fact that she did not get the role of captain. Morgan talks to a strange man by the elevator, who says he has been looking forward to meeting her. He reveals that his name is Nick Wagner and that he is the new captain.
