The second season of ABC’s ‘High Potential’ further explores the complexities in the unique life of Morgan Gillory, a civilian consultant for an LAPD unit. She successfully apprehends the Game Maker after a clever pursuit, all while confronting secrets from her past. As an increasingly curious Ava questions her about the whereabouts of her biological father, Roman, Morgan struggles to balance her professional and personal lives. Arthur’s reluctance to reveal details about Roman only intensifies the mystery surrounding the enigmatic character.
While Morgan solves complex cases, she also encounters dangerous individuals who challenge her resolve and morality. The power dynamics within the group shift with Nick Wagner’s arrival as the new captain of Morgan’s department, while Selena Soto‘s personal aspirations take a turn. The story gets more intense in “The One That Got Away,” the seventh episode of the second season. SPOILERS AHEAD.
An Unbelievable Heist Challenges Morgan and Her Friends
At an art museum, there is a break-in, with the thief knocking out the guard and causing a distraction through flares. Morgan, while driving, gets a call from Arthur, who fears that someone might be following him. He asks her if she found anything about what’s in Roman’s backpack. He asks her to be careful, and Morgan discreetly takes the bag to Soto and Karadec. Morgan and Karadec go to the art museum, where they find a Rembrandt painting missing. They are informed that the Foster family loaned the painting to the museum, with the auction valuing it at $20 million. Daphne and Oz join the case. The cops and the civilian consultant take a look at the point of break-in on the roof. She says the thief somehow took the Rembrandt, while all the other paintings in the museum were valued more. So, a personal angle is suspected.

The LAPD hires an art-recovery expert named Rhys from Mexico City to help them. He is sent by the insurance company related to the Foster family. He rules out a personal angle and says that art theft is usually about money. Morgan, Karadec, and Rhys go to the Fosters’ house, where the protagonist asks Linda and Greg Foster about why they loaned it to the gallery, especially when they claim that the painting is dear to them. Greg gives Karadec a detailed book about the painting. Morgan says the painting was purchased by a Prussian nobleman, and then went to a Polish businessman, and it finally landed at the Fosters’ house. Oz comes up with clues, and Daphne finds other cases worldwide with similar Modus Operandi. They see footage related to the attempted theft of a Picasso painting years ago.
The Case of the Wiseman Family
Daphne finds out that a man named Ari Wiseman filed a lawsuit claiming that he is the original owner of the Rembrandt painting. An enigmatic thief named Jean Baptiste comes up in the discussion, and he is revealed to be the one possibly behind the thefts with a similar MO. When the cops visit Ari Wiseman, he says that the painting actually belongs to his grandmother. The old woman says her father purchased the painting long ago in Poland, and that she is a Holocaust survivor. The Wisemans couldn’t afford to buy the painting, and couldn’t prove that the painting was stolen. Soto, Oz, and Daphne examine Roman’s bag. At home, Morgan asks Ava to be patient and trust the cops with Roman’s case. Karadec questions the museum staff about the case.

One of the staff members says she saw a man lurking around the Rembrandt painting a few days ago. Karadec claims that Ari and his grandmother Miriam, are also suspects, but Morgan says that is not possible. Rhys gets a call and abruptly leaves the LAPD room, but Morgan follows him to the elevator. Rhys says a man called him, claiming to know where the painting is. She insists on joining him, and the two of them head to the Harbach museum. Daphne says Roman’s old phone cannot be hacked into, as the Crime Department claims complications. With her mother out of the house, Ava dresses up in Morgan’s clothes for fun, and Elliott has a conversation with her. She tells him she will give him 20% of her payment for looking after Chloe.
A Ransom Call Leads to Chaos
Morgan and Rhys head up to the rooftop of the museum to investigate the point of break-in. The museum staff gives an envelope to Rhys, which contains a photograph of the girl in the Rembrandt painting. On the back of the painting, there are instructions for Rhys to go to Woodley Park at 1 PM, with $500,000 ransom money. Wagner reprimands Morgan for going to the museum on her own. He gets angry and tells the protagonist to follow his orders when she is at his precinct. Wagner tells her not to be involved and that he and Karadec will handle the case.

Rhys and Morgan take a drive. Karadec has a conversation with the Fosters, who refuse to pay any ransom. Ava calls Arthur to ask about her dad, curious about what kind of person he is. Arthur tells Ava not to call him, and that he should have a proper conversation with Ava and Morgan again. He also says that Roman is a good person. Wagner and Karadec drive to investigate, and the former tells the latter that he trusts Morgan, but they should be careful. Karadec tells him not to be angry with Morgan and to treat her well.
The Mystery of Jean Baptiste
A car thief coincidentally shows up on the scene, which causes Karadec to reveal his identity. The ransome man, seeing this, drives away. The cops chase the ransom man. The exhilarating chase becomes adrenaline-fueled as Karadec and Wagner drive two different cars to chase the ransom man. However, he manages to get away in the ensuing chaos. Morgan and Rhys have a drink at a bar and display flirtatious energy. Rhys says that he took an interest in paintings at a young age. Rhys and Morgan get intimate when the sexual energy between them reaches a new level.

During the act, when Morgan sees Rhys’s back in the mirror, she recalls details about the thefts involving a similar MO. Seeing a gunshot wound on Rhys’s back, she deduces that he could be the enigmatic Jean Baptiste. The case gets blown wide open when a body appears at the museum. Soto looks at the photos from the backpack and obsesses over a photograph of a man whose life remains mysterious. As Arthur gets into his car, the mysterious man from the photo strangely appears in the car and says he wants the backpack.
