His & Hers: Did Jack or Anna Kill Rachel? Who is Lying?

In Netflix’s ‘His & Hers,’ a small town in Georgia is shaken by a string of murders. In charge of the investigation is Detective Jack Harper, whose estranged wife, Anna, is covering the case as a journalist. What makes an already tricky case more complicated is that Jack and Anna suspect each other of the crime, while also digging into other avenues where the victim’s dirty secrets come out. At the same time, the couple also has to confront the weight of their own secret and lies, especially with the shadow of a deep-seated grief looming over them. SPOILERS AHEAD.

Jack’s Connection to Rachel Makes Him Highly Suspicious

As an experienced police officer, Jack knows that when a woman is violently killed, the most likely suspect is her husband, lover, or both. When Rachel dies, her husband, Clyde, is considered to be at the top of the list. The man reveals that his wife had been having an affair, which he was aware of since they were in an open relationship, which makes her secret lover the most likely culprit. The problem is that Jack is the one she was having an affair with, and he was with her the night that she died. He knows how shady this sounds, which is why he decides to keep it a secret and tries to steer the investigation away from him.

What he doesn’t realise is that Anna saw him and Rachel that night, so she knows he was there. So does Helen, Rachel’s best friend. Some time later, he also discovers that Clyde, too, knew about their affair, but didn’t say anything because he didn’t want his own secrets to come out. In an effort to keep his involvement with Rachel a secret, he hides evidence, beginning with Rachel’s phone, which he discovers in his own car. At first, he gives the order to locate the phone, but as soon as he realizes it has been in his car this whole time, he promptly cancels the order. He decides to go through the phone himself to see if there’s anything that could incriminate him, while also hoping to find some clue that will point him towards the real killer.

However, he needs her face to unlock the phone, so he goes to the morgue, where he makes an excuse about losing his wedding ring to get in. Moreover, when he is asked to submit his DNA so that the forensic team can remove his matches, like every other police officer who had been at the crime scene, he starts making excuses. This is because the semen inside Rachel’s body is his, and the moment he gives his DNA, everyone will figure out they were together that night, and he will be arrested. To save himself, he takes the DNA of his niece. Had it been just him, it wouldn’t have been a problem to hide such things. However, his actions make his partner, Detective Priya Patel, increasingly suspicious, and she begins to consider the possibility that he may be the killer.

Anna Had an Intense Motive to Kill Rachel

While all evidence seems to point towards Jack being the killer, it turns out that he was just a victim of the timing and had nothing to do with the murder. He wanted to destroy the evidence because he knew how easy it would be for the others to believe that he killed Rachel, based on all the evidence. It isn’t until much later that he realises that Anna was also there the night Rachel died. She saw her and Jack having sex, and considering that Jack was her husband and Rachel was one of the women she hated, one could say that she had motive enough to kill her. Later, it is revealed that Rachel and Anna used to be friends when they were in school, but Rachel did something unspeakable to Anna, which would justify her seeking revenge.

To make things more suspicious, when Helen is killed, Anna is the first one on the scene. When asked how she entered the locked school, she says she shimmied it, as she and the others used to do when they were in school. Priya later notes that Anna is the one who has benefited the most from the deaths. Covering the case has revived her career, which was all but dead otherwise. She believes that either Anna has something to do with it, or she knows something she is not telling anyone. In the end, however, all these suspicions are deemed wrong when an entirely different picture comes to light.

It is revealed that both Anna and Jack are innocent, and while they may have made some mistakes and they have most certainly handled some things really badly, they are not the ones who killed Rachel. Eventually, Anna’s archnemesis Lexy Jones and her husband, Richard, are blamed for it. While the rest of the world believes this to be the end of the story, Anna later discovers that the true killer had been someone else all along, someone unexpected, yet deeply resourceful and capable of violence when motivated.
