Netflix’s ‘How to Sell Drugs Online (Fast)’ brings back Moritz Zimmermann for another round of chaos and crime-fueled adventure. The third season ends with him going to prison for eight years after taking the entire blame for MyDrugs and other criminal activities upon himself. This allows his friends to continue their own lives without a hitch, especially Lenny, who finally gets the treatment he needs and can look forward to a future where he is not constantly thinking about his impending death. He also promises to get Moritz out of prison, but the fourth and final season reveals that he did not come through on it.
Moritz is given a computer to entertain himself, but when he uses the internet on it without permission, it is taken away from him. This cuts him off from his friends, who visit him less frequently over time. The fourth season begins four years into his prison sentence, where he makes a deal with the cops, particularly Benedikt Kampe, to get an early release. Now that he is free, he plans to start a new business that is completely legal. However, he quickly realizes that the world has changed quite drastically in the past four years, and every idea that crosses his mind has already been turned into a business. The prospect of not being able to come up with a good business idea scares Moritz, and he becomes even more dejected when he discovers that Dan Riffert has turned Bonus Life into a thriving company.
He had come up with the idea for it in Season 1 when the Dutch had asked Moritz to create a front for his drug business. While Dan was excited about it even back then, Moritz dismissed his idea. But now, it is a huge success, and he feels cheated out of his share, even more so when he discovers that his best friend, Lenny, is also working at the company. This leads him on a path where he tries to get a majority share in Bonus Life, but things get worse by the minute, especially with the involvement of Behzat, a businessman who deals in drugs and is much more ruthless than anyone Moritz and his friends have crossed paths with. In the end, difficult choices have to be made, especially by Moritz, who must decide what he truly wants in his life. SPOILERS AHEAD.
Who is M2000?
In the final scene, we see Moritz’s friends hanging out at Fritzi’s, and Lenny gets a notification. It shows a friend request from the username “m2000,” and from the expressions on Lenny’s face, he knows exactly who it is: his best friend, Moritz. When they started MyDrugs, Moritz chose the name “M1000,” which served as the identity of the person who ran MyDrugs. It was his alter ego, which was supposed to be limited to the site and the business, but over time, things happened such that Moritz became more and more invested in that identity, which caused all the problems with Lenny and his other friends. So, when Lenny sees “m2000” flash on his screen, he doesn’t have to think twice about the fact that this is his friend, which is shocking for him because he and the rest of the world think he is dead.
In truth, Lenny never sees Moritz die. He only hears the gunshots while driving away, believing that his friend is at the receiving end of it. No one can blame him for thinking that way because, all things considered, Moritz should have died. He is outnumbered and has no way out of the situation. It is only a stroke of luck that saves him. No one but Ersan and Marie know about it, and respecting Moritz’s wish, they keep it a secret. However, a few months later, he himself reaches out to his best friend, who is one of the few people that he wants in his life no matter what. It seems unlikely for him to return home as too much has happened, but this doesn’t mean he cannot keep in touch with Lenny.
The choice of his username could be a way for him to let Lenny know of his identity without tipping off anyone else. Interestingly, it could also suggest that Moritz has landed himself in another venture, and with his track record, there is a good chance that it will take a criminal route. Could it be that he has found himself in a bind again and needs Lenny’s help to get out of it? If he had chosen to leave his past life behind, only something drastic could make him go back and drag his best friend into his mess again. Or, it could simply be that he misses Lenny too much and wants to be involved in his life, even if from a distance.
Why does Moritz Fake His Death?
Even though he survives, Moritz knows that things have gone too far for him to come back home. Due to his ego and insecurities, he meddled in the well-settled lives of his friends and created more chaos for them. He had promised himself that he would not get involved in any criminal activities, but he ends up getting stuck in the same cycle, and not only does he engage with criminals, but he also leads his friends in dangerous situations. Lisa almost dies, and he blames himself for it. At the end of the day, he realizes that he cannot change himself. Even though he loves his friends, there is too much history and conflict to allow them to find a common ground for peace.
Moritz does not want to be the constant disruptor in their lives, so when he gets the chance, he decides to leave them to their own devices and get out of their lives once and for all. This is the only way he can keep them from the danger that he seems to attract. Interestingly, we find him working at an oil rig, which calls back to a passing remark his sister made when he got out of prison. In the first episode, she tells him to get a job within a month as it is the requirement of his parole conditions. She comments that most ex-convicts struggle to reintegrate into the labor market, which leads them back into the life of crime. So, as long as he is not planning to work as an oil rig caretaker, she suggests he get a job. Ironically, we find him working the same job, but there is more to it than just a callback to the conversation with his sister.
By now, Moritz has had enough time for self-reflection and to know that it’s best for him to remain as isolated as possible. For the years that he was in prison, everything went well for his friends. All of them were safe, none of them indulged in criminal activities, and they were happy with the way things were going. They had problems, but none of them made them scared for their life. All this changes when Moritz comes out of prison. So, in the end, when he has the chance to go away, he decides to stay at a place that is a prison of its own. The fewer people he is in contact with, the lesser his chances of hurting someone. With this in mind, staying at an oil rig in the middle of the ocean seems like the perfect job.
What Happens to Dan and Lenny? Why does Lenny Leave Bonus Life?
While Moritz was in prison, Dan and Lenny built Bonus Life from the ground and turned it into a successful venture. There were some hitches, but they were not borne of malice but because of their stupid mistakes, especially Dan’s. Over time, they learn their lessons and find ways to keep the company going despite the challenges. The biggest plus point in all of this is that they can trust each other and don’t have to worry about their egos coming in the way and one person trying to take the company from the other. None of this was possible with Moritz, which is why, when he comes back, Dan cannot trust him. In any case, by the end of the season, with Behzat’s investment, which was actually Moritz’s way of getting control of the company, Bonus Life stabilizes again. This time, Dan has learned his lesson. He decides not to be extravagant and focuses on the essentials to keep the company from going bankrupt again. Lenny, however, will not be a part of his journey.
Halfway through the season, we discover that Kira had secretly been working for a businessman, coding stuff for him while telling her husband, Lenny, that she is working at the bar. Her employer is so impressed by her work that he invites her to come work for him in California. However, before Kira can talk it over with Lenny, Moritz finds out about it and exposes her secret. Due to the urgency of the situation, Lenny shelves the conversation, but when he eventually talks it over with his wife, it makes sense for them to go to America. Not only is it a great opportunity for Kira, but it would also give a clean slate for them to start anew, leaving the chaos and danger behind for good.
Having seen death up close, Lenny doesn’t want his family to be an anywhere near danger, so it makes sense for him, Kira and their child to pack up their stuff and leave the country for good. Interestingly, he gets Moritz’s friend request while he is at the bar with his friends and loved ones. He is shocked to see it, but it is unlikely that this discovery would have any impact on his decision. Because if he chooses to stay behind for Moritz, he would have to let go of Kira and their child, and this isn’t the bargain that he wants to make. He will most likely accept the friend request because, despite their ups and downs, he and Moritz had been each other’s ride-or-die. However, that will be the extent of their interactions, and their friendship will have to continue over social media.
What Happens to Behzat and Ersan?
While Moritz remains the catalyst of all trouble in ‘How to Sell Drugs Online (Fast),’ Behzat is a major antagonist in the final season. He built a drug empire for himself, which worked under the cover of a frozen food company called Brofrost. He had already indulged in killing people who came too close to exposing him and hurting his operation, and it didn’t matter if he was killing a rival, one of his own goons, a journalist, or a police officer. He had all the right connections to tip him off of any raids and the developments in the investigation against him. And then, Ersan brings Moritz into the picture. The duo asks him for money to invest in Bonus Life. Ersan sees it as a way to leave the life of crime behind and make money the legal way. However, he underestimates Moritz’s greed and desire to hurt his own friends, which leads Behzat to become a key element in the future of Bonus Life.
Ersan is disappointed by Moritz, whom he sees as a way to escape the criminal world. In the end, however, luck favors him. With the cops raiding his compound, Behzat is forced to flee, but he kidnaps Moritz, Ersan, Lenny, and Dan. He wants them to build his business back. Dan is allowed to leave under the context of keeping up appearances, especially if Behzat wants to use Bonus Life as the front for his criminal endeavors. Ersan is forgiven and allowed to join the gang again. Moritz and Lenny are given a gun where one must kill the other, and the survivor would work on the program that Behzat wants. However, things go drastically awry. After Ersan starts a fire as a distraction, Moritz forces Lenny to flee and stays behind to stop Behzat and his men from catching his friend. He plans to kill Behzat, but he is outnumbered. As he drops the gun, a bullet is fired.
It hits Behzat on the leg, who mistakenly fires his gun, killing the woman working for him, who mistakenly fires her gun, killing her colleague, who mistakenly fires his gun, which hits Behzat right in his head, killing him on the spot. With all three of them dead, Moritz and Ersan are relieved as the only people who want to kill them are gone. It also gives them the opportunity to start anew because they have already used Behzat’s money to buy almost half of the stake of Bonus Life. While Moritz decides to walk away from the company and his previous life, he tells Ersan to make use of his fifty-one percent share in the company and get the life he always wanted for himself. With this act, Moritz makes up for the trouble he unintentionally created for Ersan and gives him the happy ending he wanted all along.
