Hugo Weaving’s ‘The Great White’ Starts Filming in Australia in June

Hugo Weaving’s next drama series will shoot in the Land Down Under. Principal photography on ‘The Great White,’ a legal dramedy series backed by ABC, will take place in Australia between June 1 and August 17 this year. Weaving is the only revealed cast member of the six-part show. Series Creator Ange Betzien, Nick Coyle, and Andrew Anastasios serve as writers, with Mia Wasikowska and Nash Edgerton roped in to direct.

The story features Weaving as Alan Armstrong, a brilliant but disgraced lawyer who is forced to represent a dog on death row. As the trial moves ahead, Armstrong finds himself on an unexpected path toward redemption and self-discovery. We will likely see a relationship form between Armstrong and the dog, and how it changes his life in various ways. The title probably addresses the dog, in which case it might be a Samoyed, a White Swiss Shepherd, or a huge Kuvasz.

Hugo Weaving, known among cinephiles as Agent Smith (‘The Matrix’), Elrond (‘The Lord of the Rings’) and V (‘V for Vendetta’), was last seen as Frank Harkness in Apple TV+’s ‘Slow Horses’ and ‘How to Make Gravy,’ a movie based on the 1996 song of the same name by Paul Kelly. The actor has many projects awaiting fruition, including the SBS show ‘The Airport Chaplain,’ based on the titular professional named Tobias Wallace, who uses unconventional methods to handle the airport’s daily emergencies; the romantic thriller ‘Hold Still,’ directed by Orla Doyle, and the Paramount+ miniseries ‘Dalliance,’ which centers on a married ex-cameraman’s connection with a woman named Dani, whom he meets a Sydney Harbour ferry. ‘Priscilla Queen of the Desert 2,’ the highly anticipated sequel to the 1994 film ‘The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert,’ is also in the works. However, Terence Stamp’s passing in 2025 has slowed things down significantly, especially for director Stephan Elliott, who has made it clear he needs to recover from the pain. Stamp even pre-shot his ‘Priscilla Queen Of The Desert 2’ scenes months before his death.
