Husbands in Action 2: Will There be a Sequel?

‘Husbands in Action,’ the Korean film, packed with punches and punchlines, concludes its story on a satisfying and definitive note. Police officer Choong-sik has successfully managed to save his ex-wife, Si-nae, and their daughter, Yeon-jun, from the grasp of their kidnappers. In the process, he has also mended his previously combative relationship with Min-seok, his ex-wife’s current husband, who is a veterinarian with high-adrenaline hobbies. Moreover, the duo’s rescue mission had ended with the arrest of three high-profile criminals, adding further notoriety to the cop’s career.

Therefore, by the end, everything seems to have worked out for the protagonist. However, as the story’s climax introduces a new and unexpected player, the possibility for the narrative to continue opens up. Even though the film hasn’t been officially confirmed for a sequel, enough attention from the fans and critics can easily change that. Therefore, if all goes well, fans might be able to look forward to a potential ‘Husbands in Action 2’ sometime in 2028.

Husbands in Action Leaves the Scope For a Future Sequel

‘Husband in Action’ stands on its own as a coherent narrative that wraps up nearly all storylines over the course of its runtime. Therefore, a sequel isn’t necessary to offer a sense of completion to the narrative. Even so, the film certainly leaves the possibility open for a continuation to follow Choong-sik’s misadventures in Incheon. In the film, Yong-gang plays a central role as an antagonist who becomes the final bad guy that needs to be taken down. He is an old-school gangster who used to be in charge of the city streets and its underground drug ring. Therefore, once out of the slammer, he’s disoriented by the new changes to the city, which include the criminal takeover of Do-jun and Hya ran, a power couple who have digitized the local narcotics underworld.

Yong-gang also has a bone to pick with Choong-sik, who was actually the arresting officer responsible for putting him behind bars all those years ago. Yet, despite his determination to take down both his enemy and his new competition, the gangster ultimately fails. He is arrested and put back into the prison he had left earlier. However, in his absence, a new face arrives in town. The film’s climax depicts a woman’s return to Incheon. This woman is revealed to be Mrs. Kim Yong-gang, the wife of the old-school gangster. Her arrival is accompanied by a shift in the air, seemingly denoting the calm before a storm. Therefore, the last-minute introduction of the character promises the possibility of the story’s continuation in a potential sequel. If ‘Husbands in Action’ is picked up to be a multi-film endeavor, fans can definitely expect to see more of this character, most likely in an antagonistic role.

Husbands in Action 2 Can Focus on a Power Struggle in Incheon

Even though ‘Husbands in Action’ concludes on a happy ending, it does leave one looming threat dangling on the horizon. From the looks of it, the city of Incheon is a breeding ground for drug rings and distribution. In the early days, Yong-gang and his mob sat at the top of the illegal food chain and controlled the shady lanes in town. After his arrest, Do-jun and Hya ran took over with their modernized version of a drug cartel. Therefore, now that all three of these criminals are locked up, it creates a natural power vacuum in the city. With no clear top dog running the show, Incheon is free for the picking for any future aspiring drug kingpin. Therefore, the arrival of Mrs. Kim Yong-gang is much too fortuitous to pass by without seizing the opportunity.

As a result, it is likely that the center of the conflict in a potential ‘Husbands in Action’ sequel will revolve around Kim Yong-gang’s attempts to take over the city previously ruled by her husband. Furthermore, depending on the nature of her marriage, it’s also possible that a revenge arc would be included in her narrative. Given that Choong-sik has now arrested and incarcerated Yong-gang twice, he will definitely be at the top of the gangster’s wife’s hit list. Consequently, this would also put his family, especially his ex-wife’s new husband, Min-seok, on the new villainess’ radar. Additionally, despite receiving their ultimate fates as criminals, Do-jun and Hya ran are still complicit in the plot that helped in the arrest of Yong-dong. For the same reason, it is more than likely that his wife would also come after them.

Alternatively, it’s also possible that Kim Yong-gang would remain much more focused on simply overtaking the city than avenging her husband. After all, the couple’s relationship seems to be fairly distant, considering she never once comes up in the gangster’s storyline. This would allow for a more crime-driven approach to the sequel, where the power struggle in Incheon can become the central focus of the narrative. On the other hand, the emotional aspect of the storyline can continue to revolve around the evolution of Yeon-jun’s family and the dynamic between her three parents. A-ra, the journalist who begins tentatively dating Choong-sik, can also become a more prevalent part of the eccentric family and the overall story in the future. Thus, there’s plenty to be explored in a potential future sequel.
