Netflix’s ‘I Will Find You‘ follows the story of a man named David, who is convicted of murdering his three-year-old son, Matthew. However, the revelation that his son might still be alive leads him down a rabbit hole that poses more questions than answers. The third and fourth episodes further build the mystery and fill in the gaps through flashback scenes. The third episode opens with a flashback to July 4, 2021. It looks like a happy gathering from the outside, but tensions ripple still.
Rachel, who has broken up with Hayden, is trying to convince herself and the others that they will not get back together. Meanwhile, a man named Kyle, aka Skunk, keenly looks at Adam and David, with Adam joking that they always thought Skunk would end up becoming a part of Nicky Fisher’s gang. His and David’s father, though, takes that joke a bit seriously, though they don’t share it with their sons at the time. Perhaps, if they had, things might have turned out differently for David. SPOILERS AHEAD.
Fathers’ Struggle to Trust Their Own Children Causes Friction
Rachel and David’s search for Hilde takes them to her PO box in New York. Meanwhile, Cheryl finds out they are in New York, though when asked whether she has been in touch with her sister, she denies it. Later, she calls Rachel to warn her of getting roped into trouble because of her convicted ex-husband, and Rachel ends up telling her about the possibility of Matthew being alive. The information catches her off guard, and she cuts the call. She breaks down over what she has just been told. She also happens to be at a gala, where a woman named Gertrude finds her crying and comforts her.

Meanwhile, Greer is eyeing a move to Seattle for a better opportunity, but she hasn’t told her father about it yet. She is advised by her colleague to do it before the man finds out about it himself. By the time she comes around to it, she discovers that her father already knows. Elsewhere, it turns out that Lenny and Phillip were the ones who buried the baseball bat because they thought that David actually killed his son due to his night terror episode. Of course, now that more information has come to light, Lenny feels guilty about not trusting his own son and decides to investigate the case all over again.
Speaking of not trusting one’s son, Phillip discovers that Matthew’s grave has been dug up and his body stolen. On giving the description of the car that was seen in the area, Phillip realizes that Adam did it. When he and Lenny confront him, Adam reveals that he dug the grave because he wanted to test Matthew’s body again, but he never got to do it because the coffin was already empty. It also turns out that he has been suspended from his job, but before leaving, he stole the case files and the records, which means they can go through the case and find the things they missed the first time around.
David Meets the Woman Who Helped Put Him in Prison
Rachel’s boss Jim, who helped her track down Hilde, advises her to lean into the Matthew story and make it her comeback in journalism. He cannot stress enough how great the opportunity is for her; however, the case is too close for her to report on it. She is entirely focused on finding Matthew and proving David’s innocence and doesn’t want to milk it for her own career. However, Jim also points out that if she doesn’t write the story, someone else, eventually, will. Meanwhile, she goes with David to Hilde’s PO box, where he pretends to be her son to get her mail.

Rachel tries to warn David of the FBI closing in on them, but his mind is elsewhere. When things get dire, Rachel has herself arrested to distract the cops, giving David the chance to enter Hilde’s apartment, which is already being staked out by the FBI. He manages to get her alone, and she reveals that she lied on the stand because, in return, her gambling daughter’s debts were fully paid off. The guilt of her actions leads her to help David escape her place, especially as the FBI agents realize that Rachel is stalling them. She reveals that the offer was brought to her by Skunk, whom she calls after David leaves.
Meanwhile, Greer chases after David, who narrowly escapes her. Elsewhere, Gertrude makes a huge donation to the Payne Foundation. Later, she is found talking with Stephano, the corrupt cop who has been keeping an eye on David’s situation. They talk about how Cheryl doesn’t seem like someone they should concern themselves with, but she is also a little worried and frustrated about how the David situation has gotten out of hand so quickly. Meanwhile, Hayden enters his apartment to find David waiting for him, who asks for his help in getting Rachel out of prison.
A Detail From the Day of the Murder Sparks a New Direction in the Investigation
The third episode ends with a boy named Theo being called in for dinner. He is the same boy from the photo, which means his real name is most likely Matthew. The fourth episode, however, doesn’t answer where exactly Theo/Matthew is. It gives us a flashback to eight years ago. Hayden and Rachel are broken up but are friends, working on his charity speech together. His focus is on getting his mom’s approval, but it seems she is not so easily pleased. At the same time, Hayden also realizes that he made a mistake breaking up with Rachel and wants to get back together. However, she thinks they should just be friends.

Back in the present, Rachel is arrested for aiding and abetting David, particularly in the context of Ted’s death. Her possessions, which include the photo that started it all, are taken in as evidence. Meanwhile, a conversation with Hilde with the cops reveals that she is protecting David. It turns out she called Skunk earlier to get him out into the open so David could get his hands on him. Meanwhile, David convinces Hayden to help Rachel, but her ex asks him not to drag her further into this mess. He promises he won’t, but of course, that’s not going to happen.
Elsewhere, Lenny, Phillip, and Adam are hard at work, poring through Matthew’s case file. They discover that that night, Cheryl was called into work by her administrator, Ronald Dreason, who is now her husband, for a work emergency concerning an onslaught of bus accident victims. However, it seems there was no bus accident that night, which means Cheryl was drawn away on false pretenses. When asked about it, Cheryl says Ron told her the bus was rerouted to a different hospital. When hinted that he lied to her, she refuses to believe it.
New Details Emerge in Matthew’s Case
FBI Agent Sarah Greer tries to make sense of certain things in the case. To begin with, she doesn’t understand why Rachel had the photo. She also discovers that Hilde called Skunk, but doesn’t know how the woman is connected to the man known to be the fixer for the Fisher gang. When interrogated, Rachel remains silent, even as the cops tell her they are trying to save David. The interrogation is cut short when Skunk’s whereabouts are traced to Washington Park, which is where Hilde had called him. He didn’t know she was working with David, who confronted him.

The situation turns violent as Hilde is shot dead. Skunk also shoots himself by mistake and tries to run away. He eventually tells David to ask his father why the Fishers would be interested in taking his son. Later, Skunk is arrested, and one of the questions the FBI agents have is why he didn’t just shoot and kill David when he could have so easily. During his interrogation, he claims that Hilde was afraid of David, which is why she worked for him. He also reveals that David believes his son is still, though he claims the guy is gravely delusional, surprising the cops, who had no idea about all this.
Hayden bails Rachel out, but when he asks her to stay away from David, she makes it clear that she cannot. The timing of her release also coincides with David’s being found by the FBI, but she and Hayden arrive just in time to help him. Elsewhere, Lenny and Phillip, who has been fired from his job, as the warden, meet a former colleague named Gerry. She reveals that Ron was supposed to appear as a witness in a Medicare scam, but he feigned amnesia at the last moment, completely derailing the case. It is believed that the Fisher gang may have had something to do with it.
Greer Makes an Astute Observation
Since it is clear that Fisher had something to do with Matthew’s absence, it makes sense that Ron’s connection to the gang was the reason why he lied to get Cheryl out of the house. However, he claims he never lied, and Cheryl believes him. The audience, however, is told not to make that mistake because when Cheryl gets a voicemail from Lenny, Ron makes sure she doesn’t see it. Lenny is also keeping secrets of his own, as Phillip thinks he knows why the Fisher family decided to target David and Matthew.

David, too, wants answers from his father, and he decides to drive home to talk to him. With Hayden in the loop now, Rachel asks him to give them his car so they can travel to get some answers from Lenny. Hayden doesn’t like the fact that David is not keeping the promise he made, but the man is more concerned with finding his son. In a twisted turn of events, we later discuss that Hayden is actually Gertrude’s son. She has been keeping tabs on him all along, thanks to Stephano.
Meanwhile, the confirmation of Ted’s death as a suicide confuses the Feds. Still, Greer ends up seeing Matthew in the picture, which shows why David is on the run, chasing after leads that may bring him his son and freedom. But there are a lot of secrets he needs to unravel first, including the involvement of his father, Lenny, with the Fisher family. In the final scene, we see him at gunpoint by an unknown assailant.
