ITV’s Protection Has Begun Filming in Liverpool

The filming of ITV’s new show ‘Protection’ has begun in Liverpool, England. The drama series follows “psychologist Dr Amalia Cohen-Aharonov, who has been newly appointed to head up the Israel Witness Protection Authority and is presented with an opportunity to bring down a major organized crime gang (the Segal Family),” as per the official logline.

The shoot of the series is taking place across various spots in and around Liverpool. In July, the cast and crew were spotted filming some sequences in Runcorn, an industrial town a few miles from Liverpool. The shoot particularly happened in the parking lot of Runcorn Shopping City, an indoor shopping center. Liverpool is considered an ideal filming location due to its architectural diversity, scenic waterfronts, historic landmarks, and vibrant streets and neighborhoods.

A number of major television productions have taken place in the city earlier, including ‘Peaky Blinders,’ ‘The Crown,’ ‘Utopia,’ ‘Grange Hill,’ ‘Tin Star,’ and ‘The Forsyte Saga.’ Liverpool has also hosted the production of the films ‘Mission: Impossible,’ ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1,’ ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,’ ‘Sherlock Holmes,’ ‘Fast & Furious 6,’ and ‘Captain America: The First Avenger.’

‘Protection’ has reportedly been in development for over three years with Izhar Harlev, Zafrir Kochanovsky, and Alan Whiting serving as creators. Harley’s other works include the acclaimed Israeli shows ‘Valley of Tears,’ ‘Mossad 101,’ ‘Your Honor,’ and ‘The Gordin Cell.’ At the same time, Kochanovsky is known for producing ‘Memory Forest,’ ‘And I Was There,’ ‘My Sister Skipped a Grade,’ and ‘Where Do You Live?’ Whiting, known for his writing credits on ‘Wire in the Blood,’ ‘Strike Back,’ and ‘The Trials of Jimmy Rose,’ earlier described his experience of working on ‘Protection’ in Israel as a “real delight” as the team researched the “set-up of their witness protection system.”

The cast of the show has not been officially announced as of now. However, as per reports, Siobhan Finneran and Charlotte Riley are going to be a part of the series. Finneran is known for playing Clare Cartwright in BBC’s ‘Happy Valley,’ for which she received a British Academy Television Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. Some of her other works include the Netflix mini-series ‘The Stranger’ and the BBC comedy ‘The Other One.’ Riley is also an established actress, famous for portraying the role of Aelita in Prime Video’s ‘The Peripheral,’ Robina Lund in FX’s ‘Trust,’ and Holly Evans in BBC’s ‘Press.’
