Jacob Rees Joined the Marines After Being Inspired by His Stepfather
Jacob Rees, fondly nicknamed “Dad” by his fellow Marines, was deeply respected for his leadership and compassion within his unit. Born and raised in Lafayette, Louisiana, he admitted that joining the Marines wasn’t something he ever imagined for himself growing up. His childhood was carefree, filled with games and fun with his father, until his stepfather came into the picture and introduced him to discipline and responsibility. His stepfather, a Marine veteran, made him do weekend chores, and it was something Rees initially disliked but later came to understand the value of. When his father passed away at just 17, Rees grew closer to his stepfather, who became both a mentor and a guiding force in his life. Inspired by his example, he enlisted in the Marine Corps and began his career in the infantry.
There, Jacob served for three years before training to become a UH-1Y Venom pilot with the Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 262. During his time with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, he participated in several demanding operations, including the defense of the amphibious task force live-fire exercise in the Philippine Sea. Reflecting on his service, he shared his thoughts on duty and acknowledged the deep emotional toll of losing comrades. He said he did not wish for war but recognized its realities and the responsibility that came with his role. His perspective reflected an understanding of the cost of service, yet he remained committed to protecting his country and being ready to respond when called upon.
