The episode titled ‘I Want To Be Seen As Evil’ of Investigation Discovery’s ‘Evil Lives Here: The Killer Speaks’ sheds light on the gruesome 2012 murders of 48-year-old Jami Evans and her 15-year-old daughter, Mallory Evans. Not only did the crime take place in their house, but their own blood turned out to be the perpetrator — Jake Evans. Although it was an open-and-shut case from the get-go, the investigation involved certain disturbing revelations along the way. Through exclusive interviews with the loved ones of Jami and Mallory, the documentary provides us with intricate details about the case and the trial of Jake Evans.
Jake Evans Informed the Authorities About the Murders of Jami and Mallory Evans
Darryl and Jami Diane Evans had been high school sweethearts who eventually tied the knot and built a beautiful life together. In their 26 years of loving marriage, they gave birth to four children — Emily, Mallory, Jacob “Jake” Ryan, and Audrey Evans. Their mother, who was a teacher and assistant principal in the Aledo Independent School District until 2004, spent her last few years homeschooling her youngest children, including Jake, who had dropped out of Aledo High School in January 2012. He played football in his middle school days, but his interest shifted towards golf by the time he started high school. The happy and loving family was soon torn apart by something totally unexpected.

On October 3, 2012, Darryl went out of town for business. While Audrey was scheduled to come from college to visit the family the following morning, the oldest sister, Emily, was staying over at her grandparents’ house, which was right across the street. This only left Jami, 15-year-old Mallory, and 17-year-old Jake Evans in the Aledo house, just outside of Weatherford, Texas. However, by the early morning hours of October 4, around 12:30 am, only Jake Evans remained. He called 911 and admitted to killing his mother and younger sister because he was feeling suffocated by his family. Over the harrowing call, he said, “It just kind of happened. I’ve been kind of, uh, planning on killing for a while now.”
He added, “I don’t know, I’m pretty, I guess, evil. Whatever, I’m sorry. I just thought it would be quick, you know? I didn’t want them to feel any pain. That’s why I used a gun, but it was like everything went wrong.” A few minutes later, the authorities arrived at the residence of the Evans, which had turned into a crime scene by then. Upon discovering the remains of the deceased family members and confirming the crime, they arrested the teenage suspect without incident. After he was taken into custody, Jake wrote a chilling confession, in which he admitted to killing his mother, Jamie Evan, and his sister, Mallory, and gave a detailed account of what had transpired that night.
Jake Evans’ Detailed Confession Led to His Indictment
Jake claimed that the 2007 remake of the horror film ‘Halloween’ inspired him to carry out the murders. In his confession, he said that he lured Mallory out of her room by telling her that their mother was calling her, before allegedly shooting her in the head and in the back. According to him, he then ran downstairs to the study, where he shot his mother multiple times. He allegedly soon heard Mallory scream in pain, after which he loaded his gun back up and yelled that he was sorry before shooting his sister once again. The confession also revealed more sinister details of his plan.
“My plan was to kill my sister and my mom at my house and then go over to my grandparents and kill my oldest sister Emily and my two grandparents. Then I was going to wait until morning and kill my other sister, Audrey, because she was visiting from college,” he wrote. Furthermore, he claimed, “After a while I thought to myself that if I were going to kill my mom and Mallory, I wouldn’t want them to feel anything. So I decided to kill them both with the .22 revolver I stole from my Grandpa.” Ultimately, Jake Evans was indicted on one count of capital murder and two counts of murder.
Jake Evans is Currently Incarcerated at a Texas Prison Facility
Nearly two years later, on September 12, 2014, the defense attorneys of Jake Evans filed five motions to determine his competency to stand trial. The defense explained the reasons behind his request in an affidavit, which read: “During my representation of the Defendant, facts have come to my attention which convinced me of the necessity of having the Defendant examined by a qualified mental health expert relative to the Defendant’s present competency to stand trial. I have caused the Defendant to be examined by a qualified forensic psychologist, Dr. Stephen J. Karten, who has informed me that in his opinion, the Defendant is currently incompetent to stand trial. As a result of my personal observation and dealings with the Defendant, it is also my personal opinion that the Defendant is currently incompetent to stand trial.”
A month later, in October 2014, when psychologists examined Jake, he was declared incompetent to stand trial and ordered to be sent to a state mental hospital for up to four months. On April 20, 2015, the hospital officials finally declared him fit for trial. Ten days later, on April 30, Jake pleaded guilty to the charges against him in connection with the murder of his mother and younger sister. Subsequently, he was sentenced to 45 years in prison for his crimes. Due to his plea agreement, he would be eligible for parole after serving at least half his sentence. As of writing, Jake Evans is serving his sentence at the TDCJ Memorial Unit in Rosharon, Texas, with his parole eligibility date set for 2035.
