Netflix’s ‘Titan: The OceanGate Submersible Disaster’ explores the tragedy from multiple perspectives, offering viewpoints from individuals connected to OceanGate in various ways. One particularly compelling account came from Jake Koehler, who participated in a dive just weeks before the ill-fated expedition that claimed the lives of five people, including OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush. Brought on board as a “mission specialist”—essentially a paying passenger—Koehler’s experience brought light to the operations and atmosphere within OceanGate prior to the incident.
Jake Koehler Was on the Same Submersible That Imploded Days Later
Jake Koehler shared that his fascination with the Titanic began in childhood. Watching the film ‘Titanic,’ he perceived it not as a love story but as a horror movie. As he grew older, he would spend hours watching footage from expeditions and was taken by the idea of exploring the wreckage himself. When he heard about OceanGate’s submersible journeys, he eagerly reached out and was eventually accepted as a “mission specialist.” This term was later criticized for blurring the line between trained personnel and paying passengers. Koehler joined Mission 3 in the summer of 2023, just weeks before the fatal June 18 expedition. He spent nine days on the surface vessel off the coast of Newfoundland.
Due to bad weather conditions, however, they were never able to complete a dive. He recalled moments of excitement and apprehension as he and others were sealed into the submersible while attempting a final dive off the banks of Grand Banks, but it was eventually called off for safety reasons. When news of the Titan’s disappearance broke, Koehler said he was overwhelmed with disbelief and horror. The realization that he had narrowly escaped being on the doomed dive was deeply unsettling. He shared that his first thought was how it could have been him and acknowledged how fragile the line had been.

His digital presence is anchored in his passion for underwater exploration and treasure hunting, which has become the hallmark of his content. While Jake originally launched his career as a gaming creator, primarily streaming and posting videos of popular games like Call of Duty and GTA, he gradually evolved his niche toward adventure content.
Today, he is a certified professional scuba diver and spends a great amount of time diving in lakes, rivers, and oceans around the world. Some of the places he has visited include Devil’s Den, Florida and the Bahamas. Jake Koehler Has a Loving Partner and Family to Support Him
As of now, Jake Koehler is thriving both personally and professionally. Since 2017, he has been in a long-term relationship with fellow YouTube creator Kyndall Johnson. The couple shares a warm and loving relationship and often appears in each other’s online content as well. Be it a holiday or a family celebration, they stick by each other’s side through thick and thin. In fact, she was with him on the OceanGate expedition as well. In March 2025, Jake announced that he had bought a new house, and it seems like Kyndall may be joining him in this exciting new chapter. The move marks another significant step in their relationship.
Jake comes from a close-knit family. He has two brothers, Andrew and Thomas Gotham, and a younger sister, Hannah Koehler. His mother, Lori, reportedly worked as a hairdresser, and his father, Timothy Koehler, is a former military serviceman. The values of discipline and consistency are what he has learned from them, and they are clearly reflected in his outlook on life. In November 2024, Jake underwent surgery to remove kidney stones that had caused blockages in both kidneys. Thankfully, he recovered well and has since returned to his adventurous routines. He has also been open about how the OceanGate incident, in which he narrowly avoided being a passenger, affected his mental health. It is this honest and transparent communication that connects him with his audience and has brought him so far along.
