In the summer of 2010, the world of the loved ones of a Louisville, Kentucky, young man by the name of James “Jamie” Carroll turned upside down as he was found dead. As explored in HBO’s ‘Murder in Glitterball City,’ he was found dead inside a plastic basket that had been buried in the basement of a suburban home, leading to an intense investigation. Officials identified two suspects for the crime, but with their alleged toxic relationship and them blaming one another, it wasn’t until over three years later that the case came to a close with a murder conviction.
James “Jamie” Carroll was Stabbed and Shot to Death
A native of Martin, Kentucky, James “Jamie” Carroll was always very honest about who he was in terms of his identity and sexuality. On the show, a friend of Jamie claimed that it led him to be isolated from his blood family. He had a chosen family that stood by him at every step of the event in the 1960s, which made him rather popular at school, earned him the title of best dancer, and much more. It was alleged on the show by Jamie’s friend that he ran away from home around that time because his parents allegedly had trouble accepting he was gay. According to a friend in the documentary, Jamie alleged that his father also got violent with him for the same.

Jamie then decided to relocate and pursue a career in the beauty industry, as he had been passionate about it from an early age. According to reports, he received proper training and earned the necessary certifications before launching his own salon, Illusions, where he offered styling, coloring, manicures, pedicures, tans, and more. During this period, he even evolved into a Drag Queen with the alias Ronica Reed, whose beauty was captivating to everyone around, which is why the ensuing years left them baffled.
As per Jamie’s loved ones in the show, he eventually got involved in the world of drugs as a small-time dealer, which they claimed resulted in his life spiraling to such an extent that he even lost his business. He went on to do his best, but then disappeared without a trace left behind in December 2009 after coming across a gay couple in Louisville. He was found in their basement almost 7 months later – he had been stabbed in the chest and torso before being shot at least twice. He was reportedly then made to fit in a plastic bucket that was sealed with foam and buried in the ground in the basement.
James “Jamie” Carroll’s Remains Were Uncovered Following Police Statements
On July 17, 2010, a man by the name of Jeffrey Mundt AKA Jase or Jeff had contacted the police to claim that his ex-boyfriend Joseph “Joey” Baines had broken into his home and was trying to harm him. When officials arrived at the scene, the latter was arrested, following which the former rushed out and said something along the lines of that he would tell them everything about the murder too. However, before he could do so, Joey did the same while detained in prison, detailing that a man was buried in the basement and even drew a map to the location, claiming Jase was the killer in every sense.

They were both extensively questioned about it when Jamie’s remains were actually recovered, with their stories being absolute mirrors as they blamed one another in every sense. They said that they were engaging in some intimate moments when one of them suddenly pulled out a knife and started attacking Jamie. While Jase claimed that Joey slashed Jamie’s neck, Joey alleged Jase had stabbed him multiple times before pulling the trigger, following which the former was allowed a polygraph test. He didn’t do too well, but his former partner was still the lead suspect owing to his extensive criminal history – he was the one who had left officials to the victim with a map, but it wasn’t enough.
In the end, owing to the evidence available, as the fact that neither man had spoken up in 6 months, they were both charged with murder, robbery, and tampering with evidence. Each of them maintained their innocence at every step of the way while blaming the other, indicating they were the mastermind behind the murder, while he did nothing. Therefore, by the time 2013 rolled around, it had been ascertained that both accused would face separate trials to ensure that every piece of evidence they desired was presented.

The Motive Behind James “Jamie” Carroll’s Murder Remains Unclear
Joey was the first to stand trial, during which Jase took the stand against him in a deal that took the death penalty off the table for him. The latter testified Jamie had been coming over to his place often over the past few weeks to engage in sexual activities with the couple and dabble in drugs. However, on the fateful evening, after having some one, his then-boyfriend suddenly pulled out a knife and used it on Jamie before using his gun and pulling the trigger he believes twice. Then, he stated his boyfriend threatened his life, his family’s lives, and his cats to help him bury the remains and remain quiet about the same. During Jase’s trial, though, Joey alleged that he was not involved in the sexual activities and was just watching when his boyfriend turned violent and took Jamie’s life.

He then claimed Jase controlled and threatened him in the ensuing months to remain quiet, but the latter’s defense played a video from Joey’s laptop that contradicted his statements. During it, he was seen brandishing a gun while stating he had murdered and was filled with regret, so he was planning to take his own life. However, the prosecutors argued that mere minutes earlier, another testing video was taken in which it appeared as if Jase was coaching Joey. Prosecutors also claimed it was Jase who had some extreme kinds, trying to indicate that maybe he killed Jamie as a depraved act for his own sexual satisfaction. However, in the end, in 2013, while Joey was convicted of murder, robbery, and tampering with evidence, Jase was found guilty of the lesser charges. Today, Joey is serving a life term with the possibility of parole after 20 years, but he maintains his innocence and is preparing an appeal.
