When Robert “Bob” Dorotik was found murdered a few miles away from his house in February 2000, the detectives suspected that his wife, Jane Dorotik, was responsible for his killing. While she claimed innocence, she was found guilty of murder about a year later. The entire case is talked about in detail in CBS’ ’48 Hours: The Troubled Case Against Jane Dorotik,’ which also features in-depth interviews with Jane herself. She delved deep into her side of the story and revealed how she was able to overturn her conviction.
Despite Her Claims of Innocence, Jane Dorotik Was Convicted and Sentenced For Bob’s Murder
It was in Southern California in the late 1960s when Robert “Bob” Dorotik crossed paths with Jane, who had a nursing degree to her name and worked at UCLA Hospital’s pediatric department. As their romance blossomed, they tied the knot in 1970. In the following years, the couple gave birth to three children — a daughter named Claire and two sons, Alex and Nicholas. Since her childhood, Jane had a fascination with horses and a passion for horse riding, something she instilled in her daughter. While Bob reportedly struggled professionally, Jane served as a healthcare administrator. On the outside, their marriage seemed picture perfect, but the truth was that they used to have fights over money.

By 1997, things went from bad to worse as Bob filed for divorce, after which Jane moved out to the ranch. After a while, they reportedly managed to reconcile and found love in one another. However, on the evening of February 13, 2000, Jane reported her husband missing after he had gone for a run in the afternoon and never returned home. In the early hours of February 14, the authorities found Bob’s remains a few miles away from the Dorotik residence. The autopsy revealed that he was bludgeoned and strangled to death. When the detectives inspected the Dorotik house, they came across several suspicious evidence, including traces of blood on different items in the bedroom and a syringe in the bathroom that had traces of a horse tranquilizer inside.
Despite giving explanations for each of them, the investigators considered her a prime suspect and believed that money was the motive. They theorized that she killed Bob in the bedroom, before dressing him up in his jogging suit and disposing of the remains on the side of the road. Thus, three days after the murder, she was charged with first-degree murder. After getting released on bail, she began preparing her defense for her trial. During the trial, the defense tried to shift the blame to her daughter, Claire. Meanwhile, the prosecution argued that Jane killed him because she didn’t want to pay him alimony. Her two sons, Nicholas and Alex, also testified against her in the trial. In June 2001, she was convicted of murder and a couple of months later, sentenced to 25 years to life in prison.
Several Years of Appeal Later, Jane Dorotik’s Conviction Was Overturned
For several years, Jane Dorotik continued maintaining her innocence and filed multiple motions to have the evidence reexamined, hoping to get a retrial and another chance to prove her innocence. Despite the constant rejections of her appeals, she did not give up and filed a petition for DNA testing of several pieces of evidence in 2012. Three years later, the motion was granted. Around the same time, she began working with the Loyola Project for the Innocent, a wrongful conviction group that fought with her. Despite the results of the DNA testing indicating that a foreign male’s DNA was present on the items, the state did not find it sufficient to overturn Jane’s conviction.
In her appeal, she argued that her trial included misrepresented forensic evidence that led to her conviction. Finally, in the summer of 2020, her conviction was overturned, as the prosecution also admitted to mishandling evidence, and she was released from prison. Just when she was getting used to enjoying her freedom and spending time with horses, the prosecution decided to retry her in 2022. However, in May 2022, the case against her was dismissed due to a lack of evidence that could prove her guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
Jane Dorotik Leads a Private Life that Revolves Around Her Daughter and Horses
The following year, in June 2023, Jane Dorotik filed a civil lawsuit against the County of San Diego, including several members of the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, hoping to get justice for her wrongful conviction. Jane continues to have a close-knit bond with her daughter, Claire Dorotik. In 2023, she suffered a huge loss as one of her sons, Nicholas, passed away. As for her other son, Alex, he was still under the impression that Jane was responsible for his father’s murder. Since then, she has been working with advocacy groups to help several wrongly convicted women.
While rebuilding her life from scratch in Hawthorne, California, Jane Dorotik has been involved in criminal justice reform. To get a break from it all, she frequently visits her daughter’s horse ranch in Florida. Elaborating on the same, she told Interviewing Selves, “Being in Florida and being around the horse that I love, the one my daughter bought for me, it’s just so powerful. It’s so reaffirming for me. Riding my horse is not just an act of riding a horse. It’s really reclaiming the life that was stolen from me, my right and responsibility to reclaim that life.” Looking forward to the future, 78-year-old Jane hopes to “sit in the sun a little more and just admire the horses; watch the garden grow.”
