The second season of Peacock’s ‘Poker Face’ brings back murder and mayhem in the life of Charlie Cale. The first two episodes of the season take the usual approach, where she lands in different parts of the country to find that someone has been murdered, and the truth can only come out with her help. The third episode raises the personal stakes as she finds herself in the captivity of Beatrix Hasp, who has a very special task for her. On the run from the law, Beatrix wants to know who has been spying on her for the feds before she leaves the country for good. There are only so many people she trusts, including her partner, Jeffrey. By the end of the episode, however, the innocent Jeffrey meets quite a tragic end. SPOILERS AHEAD.
Jeffrey is Murdered by the Mole He was Supposed to Rat Out
The main conflict of the third episode, titled ‘Whack-A-Mole,’ is that Beatrix and the FBI are trying to figure out who the mole is in their midst. She knows that the feds have a rat who has been feeding them info about their whereabouts. The Feds figure out that someone amongst them is working for Beatrix and has been helping her evade the law. In the end, it turns out that Jeffrey has been secretly working with the law, while FBI Agent Danny has been working with Beatrix. When Danny discovers Jeffrey’s secret, he becomes concerned about his own. He knows that if the man is sent into witness protection, he will spill all the beans, which will ruin Danny’s life.
Danny needs Jeffrey gone, but before he can find a way to do that, a plan is chalked out to ambush and arrest Beatrix. There is no time to warn her or tell her about Jeffrey, so Danny decides to sit back and focus on his own survival. He knows that there is a possibility of a gunfight, but he also knows that he cannot simply kill Jeffrey because it would turn the attention towards him. This is when the most unexpected opportunity presents itself. He discovers that Luca, Jeffrey’s handler, has planned to fake Jeffrey’s death. To make it look real, he will fire blanks at his informer, who will use fake blood to show that he is dead.
Seeing that Luca can do his job for him, Danny swaps one of the blanks with a live round. So, when the time comes and Luca fires away, he doesn’t realise that he has actually hit Jeffrey with a real bullet. Danny falls down, and the blood that comes out of him is not real. However, Luca is not aware of that, so he doesn’t pay any attention to it. Moreover, because Jeffrey’s death is supposed to look real in front of Beatrix, he doesn’t even consider the fact that the man is rooted to his spot and hasn’t moved an inch despite the chaos around them. It is only much later that he realises what has happened, but he cannot comprehend how he could have made such a major mistake and killed the very person he was supposed to protect.
Later, as Charlie and Luca mull over this mistake individually, they both come to the same conclusion. They know that the mole within the FBI would want to keep his identity a secret, and because Jeffrey was the only one who could have outed him, he decided to have the guy killed. When they present this theory to Beatrix, she realises that Danny has killed the man she loves, so she reveals his identity to Luca, leading to his arrest and ruining his plans of escaping accountability for his actions.
