A cruise director’s job goes far beyond organizing theme nights and talent shows. They are the linchpin of guest satisfaction, crisis communication, and crew coordination. From managing onboard entertainment to keeping morale afloat during emergencies, they are often the unsung heroes of any voyage. On the infamous “Poop Cruise” of February 2013, that role fell to Jen Baxter, who was tasked with holding everything together amid unprecedented chaos. She spoke out in Netflix’s ‘Trainwreck: Poop Cruise’ and offered a behind-the-scenes look at what really happened.
Jen Baxter Handled Multiple Crises While Heading the Carnival Triumph
Jen Baxter has always spoken with genuine passion about her role as a cruise director. She found joy in the energy of the job, such as the parties, the entertainment, and the chance to connect with guests from all walks of life. The constant movement, the sense of community, and the thrill of life at sea were what made it all worth it for her. On February 10, 2013, she boarded the Carnival Triumph with the rest of the crew, full of the same excitement and anticipation. What followed, however, was far from routine. On the return leg of the journey, Jen was informed that the ship’s engine had caught fire. At first, she believed it would be a minor issue and something the engineering team would quickly resolve. But as the situation escalated and the ship lost power, it became clear this was no ordinary setback.
Jen made the difficult call to allow passengers to use the bathing areas as makeshift toilets and distributed hazardous waste bags for sanitation. She acknowledged it was far from ideal, but the best option under the circumstances. In an effort to keep spirits up, she approved free drinks for guests, but the gesture backfired, and it escalated the chaos. At one point, she admitted that she truly feared she wouldn’t be able to manage it all. All she wanted by the end was a clean change of clothes and a proper night’s sleep. On February 14, 2013, when they finally reached shore, she was simply relieved that it was over.
Jen Baxter is Continuing With Her Career in Cruises Today
Jen Baxter remained with Carnival Cruise Line as a Cruise Director until February 2022 and became a recognizable and reassuring presence aboard many of the company’s ships. Over her long tenure, she worked across the Caribbean, Europe, Alaska, the South Pacific, and Australia, playing a key role in shaping the guest experience. As Cruise Director, she was responsible for overseeing weekly entertainment programs for up to 4,000 guests, managing everything from product development and programming operations to promotions, quality control, guest satisfaction, public relations, safety, and budget oversight.
Her ability to juggle these responsibilities while keeping passengers engaged and happy made her a standout leader within the company. Since leaving Carnival, Jen has transitioned to Viking Cruises, where she now works as a Program Director. Most of her assignments are in Europe, and she is currently based in the UK. Her knack for entertainment, guest engagement, and logistical coordination has made her an asset in this new role as well. In March 2023, she was even voted as one of Carnival’s top 10 Cruise Directors of all time.
Jen’s background in performance and entertainment stretches back decades. From 1997 to 1999, she worked as an entertainer with Thomson Holidays and also performed with M&M Productions. Her journey with Carnival began in 2006 when she joined as a Social Host, gradually working her way up to the prestigious role of Cruise Director. She is a graduate of Sandown College of Performing Arts, where she studied theatre, which laid the foundation for her dynamic career at sea. Her professional path reflects her natural ability to lead, perform, and connect with people wherever she sails.
