This brutal case sent shockwaves through her community and left her family heartbroken. The episode sheds light on the shocking events that ultimately led to her disappearance and unravels some pretty chilling details about her death. After days of investigation, it ultimately came to light that she became the victim of the disturbing psychology of her loved one.
Jeneen Ann Catanzaro’s Sudden Disappearance Turned Out to be a Murder
Born in 1968 in Staten Island, New York State, Jeneen Ann Catanzaro lit up the world of her father and mother, Joanne Roma, with her infectious smile and loving personality. From the day she was born, she had been nothing but a beacon of joy in the family. She exhibited a compassionate spirit and never stopped showing kindness from a very young age. Whether it be offering a listening ear for someone who is in distress or extending a reassuring presence, she always stood firmly beside those who needed her the most.
Jeneen was always a favorite among her family and neighbors, and they often described her as someone who was a “sweet person” and had a warm smile. She completed high school in 1986 from Tottenville High School and fostered a special bond with her school friend, Melissa Sebastiano. Jeneen met her husband, Joseph Edward Traeger, when they were in kindergarten. What started out as a childhood friendship evolved into something more, and the duo finally shared their wedding vows sometime in 2007. Although Jeneen’s life seemed to be perfect from the outside, it turned out to be the opposite beneath the surface.
Jeneen was extremely close to her mother and used to speak to her at least twice a day. When three whole days passed by without any word from Jeneen, she grew worried about her daughter’s safety. She ultimately called 911 on December 2, 2o18, and reported her to be missing. She informed the officials that Jeneen was last seen on November 28, 2018, at her home in Sunrise, Florida. This prompted the local authorities to launch an investigation into her sudden disappearance. As the days progressed, it led the detectives down a trail of disturbing revelations pointing towards a potential murder.
Jeneen Catanzaro’s Killer Had a History of Rape and Attempted Murder
In the days following Jeneen’s disappearance, the investigators began reaching out to her close friends and family, trying to piece together what really went down. When Joseph was questioned, he allegedly told the detective that he had last seen her 3 days ago and did not know where she was. The officials started by searching her house, where they found her car outside the home, and her phone was switched off. Further investigation brought the shocking fact about her struggling with a strained relationship with her husband to light. Although Joseph initially denied physically hurting her, his mother-in-law claimed otherwise. It was reportedly revealed that Jeneen had called the cops to her house three weeks before her disappearance. During this time, she complained that Joseph had tried to hurt her.
As the officials dived deeper, they uncovered that the 50-year-old was previously convicted of rape and was charged with an attempt to murder his ex-wife. He was also a drug addict and was in $60,000 in debt. According to the statement provided by Jeneen’s close friend, John, he was a good manipulator. Furthermore, a series of inconsistencies appeared in Joseph’s statements. Initially, he allegedly claimed that on November 28, 2018, he showered at Jeneen’s home. When he came out, he discovered her lifeless body and assumed that she had suffered a seizure. The mounting evidence and her husband’s conflicting accounts ultimately intensified investigators’ focus on him. After a failed polygraph test and persistent questioning, Joseph eventually confessed to the crime. He reportedly admitted that on the night of the murder, he had asked Jeneen if he could move back in.
However, when Jeneen refused and went forward to call 911, Joseph took the phone from her hand and, in the process, slammed her onto the floor. At that moment, she started screaming, and in order to stop her, he took a knife and stabbed her in the back of her skull. This resulted in her immediate death. He allegedly panicked and placed her body in three trash bags and disposed of it in a garbage bin. This was subsequently collected and taken to a landfill. He washed the knife in the dishwasher and ended up discarding it in a restaurant’s trash. Although the officials found the charred body parts of an individual in the landfill, they did not get identified. Hence, Jeneen’s body was never really discovered. On December 21, 2018, authorities arrested Joseph, charging him with second-degree murder, tampering with physical evidence, and providing false information to law enforcement.
Joseph Traeger Has Been Brought to Justice and is Serving Life Imprisonment
Following this, the legal proceedings against Joseph for the murder of his wife commenced. However, Jeneen’s trial unfolded over several years with delays and unexpected turns. When the prosecution initially presented the case, they introduced several video recordings as forms of evidence. During one such playback, the jury had unexpectedly heard a detective informing Joseph that he had failed a polygraph test. However, this was actually a detail that had been previously considered inadmissible by the court. Since this could have caused potential prejudice against the defendant, Broward Circuit Judge Ernest Kollra declared a mistrial on November 29, 2023. They acknowledged this was an unintentional editing error, but it could have been crucial enough to halt the proceedings.
However, the prosecutor did not remain discouraged and prepared for a retrial. The new trial began in early March 2024. However, this time, the trial proceeded without any major incident. The prosecution put forth the fact that he had confessed to stabbing Jeneen after she declined his request to reconcile. Despite the absence of Jeneen’s body, which was believed to have been disposed of in a landfill, the evidence that was presented in the court turned out to be very compelling. After less than an hour of careful consideration, the jury found him guilty of second-degree murder and passed their verdict. At present, Joseph Traeger is serving a sentence of life imprisonment at Hamilton Correctional Institution Annex in Jasper, Florida.
