When the detectives dug deeper into the crime, they uncovered that a physical altercation was the reason behind the killing. Although three alleged perpetrators were linked to the crime, only one of them was punished for it in the end. The documentary features exclusive interviews with the loved ones of John and the alleged criminals, providing more insight into the crime.
John Joseph Lewis Was Killed During a Nightout at a Stockton Bar
Born around the mid-1980s, John Joseph “JJ” Lewis was only 26 years old when he met his untimely and unfortunate demise. With big aspirations to achieve, John was looking forward to the future and making his professional and personal dreams come true. On the fateful night of August 26, 2011, he visited the Chitiva’s Bar and Grill Restaurant in Stockton, California, seemingly with a woman. However, by the end of the night, John was stabbed multiple times inside the restaurant and in the parking lot. When the authorities arrived at the crime scene, they found him dead, while the woman he was with was also critically injured. According to the autopsy, John’s cause of death was multiple stab wounds. Immediately, the police launched a homicide investigation to get to the bottom of the case and catch the perpetrator/s.
John Joseph Lewis’ Murder Was Linked to Three Individuals
Upon investigation, the detectives learned that John Joseph “JJ” Lewis got into a heated altercation with a group of three friends — Marcus McCliman, Djuane Nunley, and Dorjan “Dee Jay” Daniels — inside the restaurant. What started as a fight inside continued outside in the parking lot as the three friends were allegedly involved in the murder of John. Out of them, the police considered Dorjan a gang member who had fatally attacked John with his two friends.

Upon interviewing the witnesses in the area, the investigators learned that the trio had allegedly shouted gang-related terms at John. According to reports, several months later, all three were arrested and charged with street terrorism, premeditated murder, and attempted premeditated murder for causing severe injuries to the woman who was with John at the time. However, they were cleared of first-degree murder charges. They were held without bond as they awaited their respective trials.
Marcus McCliman and Djuane Nunley Lead a Private Life, While Dorjan “Dee Jay” Daniels is an Aspiring Rapper Today
In late 2012, Marcus McCliman, Djuane Nunley, and Dorjan “Dee Jay” Daniels stood trial for their alleged involvement in the murder of John Joseph “JJ” Lewis. During the trial, Dorjan’s defense attorney told the jury that he didn’t pull out the murder weapon or stab John on the fateful night. Meanwhile, the prosecution argued that he and the two other defendants had been holding up gang signs, indicating that it was a premeditated attack related to gang rivalry. In Dorjan’s defense, his former TV father, D.L. Hughley, also took the stand and vouched for him.
As the trial progressed, it was determined that Marcus was the one who stabbed John multiple times. Thus, on December 7, 2012, the jurors acquitted Dorjan of all the charges against him. They also eventually acquitted Djuane Nunley of the charges. After Marcus reportedly took the responsibility for John’s death, he was convicted of voluntary manslaughter but acquitted of first-degree murder charges. Ultimately, the only convict was sentenced to 11 years in prison for the manslaughter conviction and an additional year for using a knife. He was seemingly released after the completion of his sentence, but has stayed out of the limelight since then.
Meanwhile, Djuane also prefers to keep matters of his personal and professional life private. As for Dorjan Daniels, he has become a musician and releases music under the stage name — Boi Truth. The former television child star is trying to make his name in the hip-hop industry by collaborating with other rappers, including Twinn Boi, Yung Truth, and Unda Dawg. He has been releasing new music and music videos for songs such as “The Sacrifice,” “Yired,” and “Look at Me,” on his YouTube channel.
