However, that changed in 2005 when he walked into an American Apparel store and handed over a simple, unconventional resume and confidently told the staff he could take on a merchandising role. To his surprise, the store manager scrutinized him briefly and offered him a position as District Merchandising Officer. This unexpected opportunity marked the start of his professional journey. As Jonny climbed the ranks, he eventually began working closely with Dov Charney. Though the job offered upward mobility, it also allegedly exposed him to a troubling side of the company.
Jonny alleged that he witnessed Charney speak harshly to employees and described a firsthand view of his erratic behavior. He even lived in Charney’s home for a time but ultimately moved out, describing the environment as emotionally toxic. When misconduct allegations against Charney later became public, Jonny initially thought they might be motivated by financial gain. Over time, however, he said that he began to reconsider, acknowledging that the claims could very well hold true. Despite the complicated dynamics and what he personally witnessed, he admitted that hearing about Charney’s removal as CEO stirred mixed emotions. There was a sense of closure, but also a small measure of sadness for the man who had once given him a life-changing opportunity.
Jonny Szymanski is Working as a Creative Strategist Today
After his time working closely with Dov Charney, Jonny Szymanski remained at American Apparel even after Charney’s departure and the brand’s eventual acquisition. He held the role of Director of Philanthropic and Creative Partnerships and Marketing and helped shape the brand’s public-facing image and community initiatives. In August 2017, he transitioned into a new chapter of his career by joining Sunset/Studios as Vice President of Accounts and Creative. Over six years, he played a key role in evolving the agency from a boutique operation into a full-service creative powerhouse. His leadership helped launch immersive brand experiences and marketing activations for major names like UGG, Disney, Puma, Harley-Davidson, Soho House, and Forever 21.
In August 2023, Jonny took on a new role at Borg Rise US as Creative Director. He is still working there now and focuses on creator-led marketing, live commerce strategies, and business development. His work centers on helping digital influencers and brands maximize their impact in a rapidly shifting online marketplace. Known for his ability to fuse creativity with commerce, he specializes in developing content strategies, encouraging innovative collaborations, and building campaigns that drive both engagement and long-term growth in the digital economy.
Jonny Szymanski Has Been Popular in the Music and Entertainment Industry as Well
Jonny Szymanski built a dynamic and vibrant presence in pop culture and the music scene as well. He became a prominent figure in the underground music world as a part of V.I.P. Party Boys, an openly gay hip-hop group known for their different style and unapologetic lyrics. Their presence expanded when they collaborated with Cobra Starship on the track “Damn You Look Good And I’m Drunk (Scandalous),” featured on the album ‘Viva la Cobra!’ His musical journey continued when he teamed up with rapper Cazwell for the cheeky and wildly popular track “I Seen Beyoncé at Burger King,” which quickly gained viral traction online, making Jonny a YouTube sensation. In 2013, he ventured into solo work and released the song “DADT,” which addressed the experiences of gay individuals in the military.
Outside of the recording studio, Jonny became a familiar face on television. His persona also caught the attention of visual creatives, and he was featured in Todd Selby’s influential photography book ‘The Selby Is in Your House’, which showcased unique individuals and their living spaces. Additionally, Jonny became the subject of the song “Jonny Makeup” by electroclash band Gravy Train!!!!, which was an ode to him and lovingly became his nickname as well.
