In the episode titled ‘Obstacles to Justice’ of Investigation Discovery’s ‘Killer Confessions: Case Files of a Texas Ranger,’ the primary focus is on the untimely and tragic killing of Joseph Douglas in 2006 in Texas. After the case went cold for a decade or so, the detectives reviewed the evidence and witnesses with a fresh perspective, allowing them to identify the perpetrator. The documentary also features insightful interviews with Joseph’s loved ones and the officials linked to the investigation.
Joseph Douglas Was Found Dead in a Rural, Secluded Field in Texas
On July 21, 1984, Gale Thompson gave birth to Joseph Michael Douglas in Norman, Oklahoma. He grew up alongside his siblings — two young sisters, Jillian and Jessalin Thompson, and a brother named Justin Thompson — in a seemingly loving and supportive household. During a relationship with a woman, Joseph also became a father to a son named Dylan Shott-Douglas and a daughter, Cecilia Shott-Douglas. According to his mother, Joseph struggled with drugs and alcohol at certain points in his life. Despite that, she added, it was his kind and friendly personality that made many in the community adore him.

In late April 2006, Gale saw Joseph and told him to take care of himself. Unfortunately, that was the last time she ever saw her son alive. About a week later, Joseph suddenly disappeared. On May 2, 2006, her worst nightmare became a reality when she received the news of her son’s passing. That day, the Rusk County officers found the remains of 21-year-old Joseph in a rural field off of County Road 106, a few miles north of Henderson, Texas. The cause of his death was determined to be a fatal gunshot wound to the head. It was also reported that his remains had been at the site for a couple of weeks. Thus, without further delay, a homicide investigation was launched.
Joseph Douglas’ Killer Was Apprehended More Than a Decade Later
During the first few weeks of the investigation, the authorities dug deep into Joseph Douglas’ personal life. As they identified the people who were in contact with him prior to his disappearance and murder, they were led to an East Texas couple — Jarrett and Lisa Murray. Based on the evidence available at the time, the detectives arrested and charged the pair with Joseph’s homicide. However, a few months later, in September, the charges against the pair were dropped as the investigators determined there was insufficient evidence to proceed. Due to a lack of leads and witnesses, the case went cold for more than a decade.
Ultimately, in 2017, the case was reviewed and reexamined by the authorities, thanks to the Texas Ranger Unsolved Crime Investigation Program. The detectives conducted more interviews with new and former witnesses and persons of interest, leading to the discovery of new evidence. As per some witness statements reviewed by investigators, Joseph’s former roommate, Jarrett Reece Murray, allegedly bragged about killing Joseph to several people. One of the witnesses in El Paso led them to Baytown, Texas, where they tracked down the suspect and arrested him on September 21, 2017. He was charged with the murder of Joseph Michael Douglas and held in the Rusk County Jail on a bond of over $2 million. Subsequently, Jarrett was indicted for the murder.
Jarrett Murray is Currently Incarcerated at a Texas Prison Facility

A few months later, on January 18, 2019, Jarrett Reece Murray pleaded guilty to the charges against him in connection with the murder of Joseph Douglas in 2006. In exchange, he agreed to receive a 20-year imprisonment sentence for his crimes. As of today, the 48-year-old is serving his sentence at the John M. Wynne Unit in Huntsville, Texas. While his parole eligibility date is scheduled for August 2027, his projected release date is scheduled for August 2037.
